  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

UI

UI

on the bottom right hand side of the UI the icon with a blue circle looks like the GUNNER.. full circle full zoom in, out, focus on it's way to next postion..? maibe

Makes sense, but I still that it might have some lag issues in responsiveness (by lag I mean total time for human response + joystick control)..

Probably no moreso than moving a finger without the downside of engaging the left hand and covering up part of the screen.

I made a mistake in my post. I meant touchpad, not touchscreen, sorry. I corrected that.

If I understand your touchpad idea it's basically the same principle as a joystick. Either way, I think a cursor to ID the focus point is necessary on the LCD/VF...and then a button to engage the mechanism.

One of the great current Red One UI features is that the frame is text free and allows for clean shot framing and viewing.

We 100% agree... However it's a function of the height of the specific display and the aspect of the currently recorded image.

So you are looking at the worst case scenario here. With taller displays or wider aspects you wouldn't even have this minimal overlap.

We will also let you turn off items that you don't want or need to see.

LOOK Around

LOOK Around

On the UI picture we can see there's the central view with focusing point, but we can see the landscape out of the frame too (shadowed).

It's probably a stupid question but is it just safe margins or can we actually see what's around the recorded frame (like on leica telemetric cameras) ?

Of course.. it's called LOOK AROUND and it's been a function of the EVF and LCD monitoring outputs on the RED ONE camera since day one.

I'm not sure why other video camera's don't offer this, once you have experienced the feature it's hard to give it up.

Those details we will sort out as we get close... there is still lots of time and since the machines are already moving, we should have built up a good amount of stock by the time Scarlets start shipping.

I worry that by the time large and incumbent customers get served, it will be quite a while before some of us get to have a Scarlet. I wish there was a waiting list / deposit mechanism that would give me a line number.

I'd like to point out that the price of Scarlet has not risen AT ALL compared to gold (never mind GDX) since the original announcement. I want and can afford one more than ever.

Do U recognize, that some module prices changed?
:(

I saw some prices that went down as much as 300 hundred bucks (i.e. the 5" LCD from 1500 down to 1200 now). and some others that now have a price range and could potentially be up to a few hundred dollars cheaper than they were.

Looks like more things got cheaper (or potentially cheaper) than anything else concerning the modules.

HDR Mode isn't bracketed stills. I guess my midnight brainstorm was a premonition. :D

So how does it work? Does it use the max frame rate of the sensor to build up a composite? Or some clever sensor side trick?

Well... The RED ONE sensor has a read time of about 6ms, if we give them one more for Mysterium, make it 5ms. That would be 200 reads per second. If you burst it, without or without resetting the read counts for each pixel, you're essentially creating one long exposure in multiple frames. In the second frame, some pixels would clip, but you know they weren't clipping in the first read, so you can extrapolate from them.

Or they built this in really early in the cycle. Keep the data on the sensor, but run a fast clock on the sensor, each pixel just reports on when it's counter is full. From the timings, you calculate the correct value for a full exposure for each pixel and you have it.

Then again, I'm not a CMOS designer. And they also do really short shutters, no idea where I'm off track.

That UI is just too cool! I can't wait to play around with it! Might jump for a scarlet as well as the epic by the sounds of things!

All I have to say is WOW... congrats guys, the gear is looking amazing!

5" LCD now is 1600, and 2.8" LCD is 900 (it was 800)... so went UP.....
of course we should know: everything is subject to change...

my bad. that changed since yesterday. Didn't see that.

Looks more in line with the prices they announced during the Oct. 30th announcement.

Very good surprise for me, I didn't know R1 already proposed this.
I don't really understand how it works with everything going through the lense but i'm happy as i always loved composing frame with leica Ms compared to SLRs...

Independent Frame Guides

Independent Frame Guides

...does this include HDMI and HD-SDI outputs or just the RED monitor(s) and EVF?

Yes, frame guide choices are independent per monitor output. Lots of flexibility here.

So just as one example - the camera's default operational setup - a 5" touchscreen LCD may be showing full camera menus plus Look Around and Frame Guide graphics, the HDMI output may be providing a 720p Preview Output with Safe Action and Safe Title, and the HD-SDI output (on EPIC bodies, or either I/O module) may be providing a clean feed (no graphics) 1080p Program Output.

I notice the resolution of the UI sample you've posted is 800x480 - will there be any standard XGA, SXGA or 720p options for third-party monitors?

Monitor output resolutions are also very flexible, so for each output we can scale the monitor path information to support 720p or 1080p or 800 x 480 etc....

Yeah, I just saw that for the first time.

I think it could mean one of two things...

(1) That is the actual pricing and it's changed yet again. (I'd be highly surprised if this was the case)

or (2) These prices were actually not supposed to be updated as of yet, and will be made official upon release.

Just my guessin'...

What about the new LCDs resulotion?
Will the 2.8" LCD be at least like nikon's 3" LCD? (..and use lcd viewfinder)

This might be because there is something I dont understand about the feature,

BUT I am very concerned about a "5 axis" adjustable sensor.... in my mind the simpler the design the less problems... a sensor being "off axis" in the field, would be a show stopper.

If it was up to me there would not even be a backfocus to adjust:)

but as I said it might be a really cool feature I just don't understand....
