Again, those are mostly filmmaking cameras. The FS100 mostly aimed at indie productions.

I don't think that's Scarlet's target buyer/industry. I really don't.

Of course, you could be right, but RED has always stressed they were a "digital cinema" company. I don't think that has changed.

What has struck me as odd since Scarlet was first announced has been the emphasis by so many on Scarlet being everything BUT a cinema tool (i.e. ENG, run 'n' gun, doc). It would certainly fit the bill for those types of shooting in certain configurations, but I believe it was always conceived as primarily a digital cinema camera.

I don't read Reduser as diligently as some but, as best as I can recall, Jim, Jarred and Ted have pretty much always talked up democratizing indie filmmaking with the Scarlet, even though they've acknowledged and even addressed its other uses.

When some people complained about the smaller size of the 2/3" sensor, Jim always pointed out movies that were shot with a 2/3" sensor. He never mentions the local newscast or corporate videos.

Again, I could be wrong, but that's how it seems to me.

Considering the current cameras that are being used to shoot large budget features, Scarlet will be a very capable cinema production camera. No doubt about it.

Yes, but my point was that a 3K camera won't do nearly as well against a 4K camera (particularly one priced at around $15K). A 3K camera will be perceived obsolescence rendered not obsolete but rather all but certain.
We can't say until we know the specs of each camera, but if Scarlet Fixed were to come in at the price point people were talking about last spring ($5,950 shootable package minus media) at 3K, with REDCODE (doubt Canon's will shoot RAW), 120 fps, and the ability to use all of the modules with an Epic if I were ever able to afford one (obsolescence not rendered, upgrade path available). For me, that Scarlet would be a no brainer choice over a $15,000 4K Canon that doesn't shoot RAW, that doesn't come with a fully electronic lens, and whose accessories can't be used with a significantly better camera like Epic.

Of course, we have no idea what price Scarlet is going to come in at, and if a shootable package is $10,000 and the Canon package (minus lenses?) is $15,000 but Canon doesn't shoot RAW, then I'd still say that Scarlet is the better choice for me.

If a Canon brings these cameras in around $10-$15k it will be a fail. A legitimate cinema camera around $5000 is the real market that will change the game... Red already changed it for the $20k-$100,000 (and really everything above) market... there's just not going to be anything special about another $15,000 broadcast-spec-codec camera.

Yes, it's difficult to refute others' and promote our own claims when we have so little info to go on. However, what we do know is Jim's track record - he's a sprinter and marathoner - and he seems really cocky these days, as if he knows something we don't. ((( :

It wouldn't matter if they brought out a 12K camera for $15K, that's still out of the reach of what I perceive to be the vast majority of the Scarlet audience.
At every Scarlet price increase, would-be owners are eliminated. At some point each must ask, is it worth investing in (by Red's own estimation) an obsolescent format, or wait and save longer and buy into a future-proof format? So, yeah, what Canon announces does matter, particularly if it is priced at $15K. Epic, Sony's F65, and Alexa (a 3K camera) are priced far higher. If it is a 4K camera, that means 4K's time is even sooner than many previously thought, because Canon is famous for being conservative and slow.

If the Canon comes in around $12-15k, it will be completely trumped by Epic-S ....Assuming that the Canon won't be released right away, and Epic-S is closer than we think.

If in fact the Epic S is still in the product line, it would be a very good thing if there were some way to substitute it into the Epic Stage 3 deal for an Epic X. If value were close to the Stage 3 Epic X deal, I would gladly purchase two Epics S cameras instead of another Epic X. I suppose one could sell the Epic and buy the two S cameras, but it would be easier to just do the deal with Red.

If it is in the 5D form factor, I strongly disagree. Reality TV, documentaries and ENG will absolutely love such a camera. The codec will be "broadcast certified," and it will be small, light and "DSMC-like"--all things the F3 isn't and can't be.

We can't exactly rule out that Canon may have great Camera.

They have been mysteriously quiet in their dark chambers and they wouldn't release a Cinema camera until they though it was a contender.... after all, it was enough to make Red stand up and look resulting in a long awaited Scarlet announcement. This is so exciting it hurts, and to know I probably can't afford either makes it hurt more.

Oh for sure... I love the form factor and would love to see a camera like this. I just mean if it's $15k, it would be a fail. Because with DigicV... any DSLR from now on should have more than enough power for a 4:2:2 codec. It would be a fail because it would signify an obvious up-sell and low-ball on their part.

Exactly. But I don't think Canon will even beat the F3 with this new camera.

Doesn't matter really ...

Scarlet will crush that whole market in one day.

CRUSH

Sounds like you know something we don't about either the Scarlet, the Canon or both maybe....

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy set Nov. 3 as a deadline for a plan to resolve the crisis." Bloomberg.com

Obviously Germany, France and the whole European union, figuring that they do not have a new camera to launch during that date, decided to pull out all the stops to keep the international media attention on them during that day, and they did it with the most news and media grabbing product they have right now: their own economical crisis. Its all a matter of TV ratings. They don't want to lose their current number one news status to both the USA and Japan, who are coming with their new, fancy cameras...

Jannard, will you be making the big announcement on Irvine or at your Red Studios here in Los Angeles? And can people walking and see the big news live?
thanks! for everything, really thanks
