At the risk of going all practical on this - it's mostly about price points. The Canon DSLRs w/HD video are incredibly low cost for what they offer and the marketplace loves 'em (even if most pro motion shooters revile them).

Cheers - #19

my only concern.. is if the scarlet news is suppose to take a dump on the canon news.. then what does epic do to the canon news?

basically.. is my epic x going to be equal to scarlet?

No. I think your Epic-X will be fine because it has some things that Scarlet for sure won't, namely the following:
- 5K
- 300 fps
- REDCODE 3:1

I think you are looking at the possibility of the following on Scarlet:
- 4K
- 120fps
- REDCODE 7:1

Then again, won't be the first time I'm way off on a prediction. :-)

My take, Zak: if Epic dumps on the Canon news : Ouch
If Scarlet (and its price point) dumps on the Canon news ( not to mention other expensive competitors) then double OUCH. ( :

Jim, you could start a fight in an empty house. ( :

Well if Scarlet does 4K @ 120fps with RC 7:1 at a Scarlet price point (as opposed to an Epic S price point)
It may be a little too close for comfort.

Keep in mind the Epic program, you're buying into ongoing sweetness. Not so sure about Scarlet, apart from the long and loving relationship.

What ever mind blowing spec. they have to bring the Scarlett now.
There was allready way too much waiting for potential Scarlett buyer.
My 2 cents are : it's now or never.

Pat

I'm certain there is more to the announcement than just Scarlet, or it was just in reference to how many people it will effect not in pure capabilities(so lots of people will buy Scarlets, not Scarlet is now better than epic suck that early adopters). Could also be that dragon sensors are ready or close to so that would be huge and that would affect epic owners as their already amazing camera has the capability of getting even better.

Who knows it could be a series of things ready to ship, projector, monstro, dragon, scarlet fixed, interchangeable, Epic-s... though I'm not quit sure about it. I think even just the last Scarlet fixed specs we herd in a series of package deals would be amazing, with notice of an interchangeable date or something, would equate to biggest announcement ever for me... but I understand not for some.

yeah I have also been thinking what if till the epic deliveries are done they bring out the Epic-FF( at 15-22k...that's $), basically the epic s but with a full frame sensor then comes epic-s, that would really be "the camera you all want..." but most of my predictions are based on things we know not much change in there so i doubt I'm right on anything, fun though!

Yes Pat!!!

Lol San...

Have you graded a lot or shot a lot of Epic or Alexa skintones lately?

Please show us!

Not really but watched some of the latest trailers and whole movies shot with both cameras and that's all.

There is easy way to see and recognize those grade issues if you know what I'm talking about...

Neither Alexa or Epic look like a film or call it natural...and that's a big issue...you can't build new for of aesthetic on a technical imperfection...

Agree with Stephen. I see more than Scarlet being announced. And Epic-S shouldn't be far behind.

I do still see Scarlet as a 2/3" chip, which actually appeals to a lot of people out there (like me) who aren't filmmakers per se, but shoot docs, commercial spots, docu-drama, stock, events, broadcast, and might shoot an indie film too.

The trouble with all of this is a camera that genuinely performs as a DSMC product. That term, DSMC, was promoted by RED. You have two markets. Those that produce stills and need some motion and those that produce motion and need some stills. Neither preferred use of technology produces great for the other secondary medium. That is where EPIC should step in. EPIC produces a reasonable, though not great and by stills terms NOTHING to be excited about. Before all you die-hard RED fans tear me down in flames it produces a 14mb file as against some of the 100mb stills frames I am dealing with at the moment. Please do not even come forward with an attitude of it's good enough. To a stills photographer that's like saying to a film maker .264 codec is the best thing ever. Yes it's fine for somethings but when you are shooting to cover all print possibilities a 14Mb file is woefully inadequate. Equally before possibly another load of people shoot me down in flames do you have any idea how much money is spent in post to make RED still frames work in Vogue. I am firmly behind RED and it is the only technology to back in terms of a genuine DSMC capability. But does it genuinely exist at the moment, shot landscape (pulling a still from a movie to be blown up A4), no it does not.

As a stills photographer I believe, it's exciting and watch this space. I want to be part of it, so with no other manufacturer remotely either on or where technology is going, I am going for my order of a RED EPIC X .

They got 422 only :)

Wow...
Sure about that.
No 444 up their sleeve?

That is SO 2009...

(btw. We are actually occationally producing tv content with lesser specced cametas than the Epic or the R1. Even in the drama department. Ashamed to say so, of course, but it is true...)

I sure hope people don't go overly nuts with the speculation on Scarlet and then end up disappointed and bitchy. Personally, give me a camera with the original Scarlet specs at a price close to that originally announced, and I think that would be an amazing announcement on its own.

Hm...

I have watched some Epic stuff and wondered:
Wow. All that effort to make that beautfull cam look like a 5D...

But that is the Thing with Epic, as far as I can see after some working with the files... It has less of a fixed carracteristic than the R1. Muxh more flexible out of the box, as to how you can tweak it.

But you have to light and expose for it to make it happen.

To some extent, the same goes for the Alexa, but that camera is a lot less robust in the extremes.
When I work with an Epic image in post, I take myself in thanking Graeme for all the overhead he must have insisted on putting in that camera.

In short. Allow your self ro do some work with those two cammeras before passing a judgement...

The R1mx is in no way I can see, a maxi-Epic... There is no point in making judgements from that..

That is kinda an unavoidable byproduct of creating a hype like this.

It is fun, though...

I am getting very excited for the 3rd. I am somewhat hoping to hear about an Epic-S. I might only beable to get it with one lens and semi-bare bones but if it is still around the 12,000 range I might pull the trigger rather than getting a Scarlet.

Ian, can you clarify your terminology and units? The Epic produces a 14 MegaPIXEL image, and yes, it can't be expected to be the equal of a 100 MegaPIXEL image. In terms of MegaBYTES, a TIFF from EPIC should be about 80 MegaBYTES in file size. (14 MegaPixels) x (16 bit depth) x (1 Byte per 8 bits) x (3-color RGB) --> ~80 MB TIFF. EPIC owners who have pulled TIFF stills from motion are welcome to correct me.

These are the original Scarlet Specs, I know a lot has been added since these were announced and everything is subject to change but if Scarlet was to offer 4K, S35 with 12-14MP Stills with
interchangeable and Electronic lens option for 10K never mind the original 7K, I would be refreshing every minute on the 3rd.
