  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nov. 3rd take 2...

Canon makes great cameras. I actually began making small movies with a Canon camera back in the day.

The XL-1 was my first big boy camera. I loved that thing!

Guys? That GH2 footage looks like crap. Desaturated, no blacks, no whites, weird response curve, purple shadows. If you are happy with images like that you are probably wasting your time on Reduser. There are lots and lots of cameras that can make pictures like that. I would hope people here are looking for something better.

Thanks Brent. You're being way too harsh and obnoxious :) Not everyone started out an expert, I've been doing this for 11 months. If you feel the need to belittle someone go ahead, do it, equally... I'm sure RedUser is the place to do it. :)

I'm in here to acquire knowledge not be beaten down and told to leave, but thats the web for you, but thats forums for you, nasty is just expected :) :)

That is intentional grading to push the colors. I happen to like tinted shadows... as well as allot of other people. Some of us here are trying to achieve an artistic look... not just a sterile, technically exposed, and saturated image.

I'd also like to see some of your less-crappy work...

No need to defend yourself mate, some people just like to attack without giving it thought. Sometimes I love to day dream about forums being real life, individual 1 sitting at a table sharing a beer and voicing their opinion to individual 2 the exact same way the do in forums, and watching Individual 1 get her head kicked in for lack of courtesy.

BACK TO SCARLET everyone!

Old or not mate it stands its own!!! GOP1? Okay about to type in now.. you got me all exciiitttteeedddd.. let's see what this baby is!

GOP1 is basically just all intra-frame recording... it's what Red has always been... and what all digital cinema footage should be! The alternate is "inter-frame" which uses crappy looking motion interpolation between frame to basically save space for compression... this heavily takes away from the cinema look. The frames start to look like they're sliding into each other in stead of just rapidly changing in sequence. This is part of the reason Red motion looks so good compared to other large-chip camcorders... even at the same frame-rate. Not only is AVCHD compressing the color space... it's compressing the motion as well! GOP 1 footage is such a break through because it allows you to achieve that real "cinema motion" that digital cinema cams have... even though the footage is still 4:2:0. But hopefully we won't have to deal with such out-dated color compression for much longer!

REDCODE patent is a problem for many.

Jim

I'm just curious... if a competitor, say Canon, were to approach RED and say 'ok, you got us - REDCODE is unbeatable', would RED license it and let others compete on what is left to compete on?

RED BEATING UP CANON ON NOV 3 :)))
Not a valid analogy. Technically, Smokin' Joe Frahzuh (Ali's enunciation) lost two out of three of the fights with Ali. But put the two of them side by side now and tell me who won. Ali is like he is today because of the punishment dealt him by Smokin' Joe.

While the Ali analogy works for his fighting days, it will be a long, long time before RED is in a comparable state to Ali in his later years.

A large scale blow up from a Red has a much smoother more film like look to it than the same image from a still camera of similar resolution.
I'm not sure I agree, even though we have:

This is the first image I have seen from the Epic where the eye detail (on the point of focus/left eye) is razor sharp.

http://blog.vincentlaforet.com/2011/06/07/what-camera-did-i-use-to-make-this-still-picture/

Perhaps it's the JPEG compression (see the yucky, video-looking blocked hair detail) but there's no way that looks as good as a large-sensor MF digital back. It's a great image - bloody good, possibly DSLR-beating. But not better than film or MFD.

cus people are kind of slow and dumb, generally speaking.
I disagree. They just are not encouraged to harness their curiosity. However, those who harp on and on about the 5DmkII's 'cinematic look' (this is just one example among many) have not fully considered what they are claiming. They should know better, and so their claims should be subjected to criticism.

I for one know very little about all the tech specificities. But... I know what I see and that is Red footage looks better than most anything out there.

But hey Nov. 3rd!

How about that Scarlet!

Ali is like he is today because of the punishment dealt him by Smokin' Joe.
And Norton, and Foreman, and Shavers, and Lyle, and Holmes, and...

Back to Scarlet. I sure hope after all this time we don't see the base price come in around $10k. That would be 67% more than the original talk, and while the new Scarlet is likely to be quite different than that proposed camera, it would also be about 40% more than the general price Ted was talking about at NAB, for a camera very similar to what we're likely to see. That would be quite the hike, and likely price quite a few of us out of the picture.

:001_unsure:

And Norton, and Foreman, and Shavers, and Lyle, and Holmes, and...
He rope-a-doped and danced around those guys. Frazier is the one he went toe-to-toe with to silence his critics who said he couldn't take a punch.

The Foreman fight was the deciding moment.

NO one on earth though Ali had a chance.

David

PS: Since this thread has digressed into GH2 talk we might as well talk about classic fights.

Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran
Gotti vs. Ward
Tyson vs. Hollyfield

RED vs. The Film World

Fights? Bah, humbug. Ninjas don't boast about whom they fight. Apple doesn't try to beat its competitors. Apple builds the best damned devices humanly possible for its intended customers. I think RED does, too.

I wasn't making a comparison with a medium format digital camera, but with other still cameras of comparable pixel resolution. There is no one camera that can do every job perfectly. Red's cameras are primarily motion cameras, the first digital motion cameras that can extract commercial publication quality still frames from a motion sequence. EPIC is the first motion camera to be accepted by Getty Images for stock photography. That is quite an achievement.

Well that’s why Jim/RED has a 645 and a 617 on their “roadmap”*…

I hope they don’t drop the ball on those higher res devices, but was getting a little nervous about the stated capability of the EPIC as a high res stills camera. But it does have a lot of useful (still-ish) applications especially for live subjects (no question about that). But for useful commercial applications is has taken a bite out of more conventional professional photography markets. That leaves a smaller rarified market space that really require high res imaging i.e. 40MP to 100MP.

*[However I think the “roadmap” is more like a multidimensional quantum space, where things come in and out of existence almost at (Jim’s) will at any moment in a bizarre multiverse. Sometimes on RED user you never know which universe you are actually in from one moment to the next…but at least one is assured of forward thinking]. From a marketing perspective this a good recipe for mild insanity and screen addiction, really pushes that customer disorientation and novelty button. Jim is genius at many things it seems but marketing (that does not seem like marketing) is his forte.]

Cheers,

Eric

I'm expecting Nov. 3rd to be the biggest announcement in the history of RED.

Jim

If it's a titanium body cap or something I will be *pissed*.

And if's really going to be 'biggest' - bigger than the original RED ONE announcement - I think it's going to be more than 'just' Scarlet. Or maybe, Scarlet with more features and/or a lower price point than anyone has speculated...

Here's a totally wild one... Two Scarlet Fixeds joined at the hip, permanently collimated, sharing electronics and power... off-the-shelf, pick it up and shoot, near cinema quality 3D for under $15K?

Mike

Ahahaha!! That made me chuckle. That'd be brilliant

Even at minimum specs Scarlet will be awesome and I will be happy. I'm prepared for a bigger price.
The only thing I fear is being able to get my hands on one in time to shoot my first feature.
But no point living in fear. Living in excitement is WAY more fun.

You mean like this?

Blast from the past!

I'm having trouble imagining how you would operate this rig.

This best I can come up with is this guy:

The announcement MAY INDEED have a little something (Oh, one last thing?) to do with the fact that first contact with that guy and his people has occurred. It's an issue when you rip open the fabric of space and time to come up with camera designs, even though it happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

:-P
