  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Noticed something interesting

The scarlet will play back 5k material.

Rented my cards to an epic shoot. Came back fully loaded with 5k 96fps footage. Scarlet played it back no problem.

Just thought it was interesting.

That is not surprising, Scarlet records 5k material. ;-)

How was the exposure on the Epic footage? Ha ha.

haha

I am pretty sure it is easier for the internals to play it back then actually capture it and record it to the mags.

I'd have to guess that the playback is not full-debayer, and so it wouldn't require nearly the throughput that 5K 96fps recording would.

Did you look at the Epic footage to see how the noise was and what it was shot at? ISO800? It was ISO800, wasn't it?

Its already been said that output including playback is full debayer all the time. Dont know why people think it drops the debayer for any reason.

Timur you know its just the scarlet is really an EPIC with a firmware block right? Mwwhaha...get the conspiracy engine going.

(*warning, do not take this post seriously)

Playing and recording are 2 different beast in term of raw computer power required AFAIK (otherwise our computers would never take more time to encode a H264 file than it takes to play it back realtime) ...

The EPIC footage might have been recorded at 96 fps but it is not at all played back at 96 fps but at project framerate (in slow motion) so... you we could say :

"a Scarlet is able to PLAYBACK at 24/25/30 a clip that an EPIC was able to CAPTURE at 4 time real time (96 fps)... "

That's a cool Scarlet feature, thanks RED for not disabling it just for the sake of it !

might be disabled in the next update, wha wha

I have always thought that Scarlets were Epics that didn't quite pass Quality Control. It's a smart way to reclaim manufacturing costs and supply a new market at the same time.

Given the framerates you get on RC-X at full debayer or the fact that Bridge can't even be bothered to do a full debayer of stills, it's not a huge leap to assume that full-debayer playback in-camera would be difficult.
