  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nothing but problems on set of a Music video.

This post get me steaming...

??? "Nothing but problems on set of a Music video." ???

Why is it in the complaint area?

We need an IO "Idiot Operators" comments room.

Beta = Test and report bugs and problems.

Beta = NOT TO BE USED IN PRODUCTIONS

Agreed...maybe a newbe post area, or operator error thread.

Red cameras don't kill shoots, non-pros kill shoots!

Prep your gear, don't use new software releases, (from any company)!

Don't give the Red community a bad name, many have worked very hard to offer a "Revolutionary product" Learn it, live it, or leave it to the pro's!

These types of threads really get me steamed, sorry for the rant!

Man, I would love this...I've been reading this forum for months now, and I still feel a little overwhelmed trying to find things. I do know its made me more knowledgeable; now I just need to figure out what questions to ask.

No beta builds, huh? I'm not arguing safety or conservatism, but we roll high profile shoots on beta builds nearly every day. Budgets in excess of $50 - 80K.

In fact, I don't think we've used a release build since #9 - the important thing is to carry a spare or have access to one if necessary, and keeping the producer / DP / Director informed that a beta-release is what you're using.

Historically, our clients have understood any issue, and we've been completely upfront about the risks vs. rewards.

They appreciate the rewards, thats for sure.

As a matter of fact, a national DP in our studio recently forced another camera rental house to upgrade to 16 based on our show and tell, and threatened to drop the rental if they didn't.

Just got off the phone with post in LA and everything looks perfect.

That makes 45 shows or so.... Lucky? Perhaps.

In another thread someone who was about to go on a shoot posted this question:

I have a shoot coming up in a week. Should I upgrade to B 16 or hold off since I assume it will still be in beta a week from now? Or should I just wait and see?

Jim Jannards response:

If I were you (I am not)... I would make the leap to build 16 as quickly as possible to make sure I was comfortable with the changes before a big shoot. You won't ever want to go back. The only question is whether or not you will have enough time to get used to how it all works.

Jim

Perhaps you should stop attacking customers who listen to the advice of the guy that owns the fucking company.

Perhaps you should stop...the fucking.

LOL

I can be selective also.

Note: RED does not recommend using Build 16 on commercial productions until the formal release of this firmware at the conclusion of the beta test cycles.

I am sorry for your selective handicap reading abilities.

Please read the official note, or maybe you can call your lawyer to read it for you.

I am so glad he did that because we all know where the fingers pointing will end up.

I sorry for your budget, but that won't even buy lunches on some of my shoot.

For the leading edge, I am on it.

You sir are on the bleeding edge.

Don't be confused.

Wow, the arrogance of some of you. The fellow that started this topic is a pro who managed to get a gig with 2 Grammy winners on a shoot and Ruairi is an Oscar nominated filmmaker who is in pre-production of a major feature project. How dare you imply that people are not competent. I am starting to feel more and more that the people who are critizing those with problems are just jealous that they aren't landing the kind of projects that some others are. That is life...no use getting mad about it. Maybe if you'd make positive relationships then you might get better gigs. This whole business is about relationships. As much as you might like a camera production company, they aren't going to be the ones to hire you for a major shoot or give you funding for your film. You need to consider the people that may be able to do something for you in the future.

See, this is BS and you know it. Look at David Mullen...he is actually a top level Cinematographer and you don't see him up here acting classless talking about the shoots he's been on. A true successful person doesn't talk about their success, they let others do it. Ruairi and I haven't always saw eye to eye but I have never seen him up here bragging about landing Akira or anything else. Sure he jokes about the Oscar nod but I don't believe he's said he's more "prestigious" than anyone or any of that nonsense. This post right here shows exactly how insecure you are.

You guys need to chill

You guys need to chill

Perhaps if you find yourself posting ridicules and criticizing people during your post, you should hold off, log out of the forum, step away from your computer and chill out.

You aren't helping anyone or anything.

BTW - After nine years of working on set, I have never had the pleasure of being fed a lunch that cost anywhere near $50K. This is unrealistic, even for "National Treasure".

Sounds like the unreal edge.

Someone close this thread.

You are so right.

Yup, it's the relationships.

Do you think those 2 Grammy winner are going to work with him again?

My clients love me because I won't allow for that kind of unnecessary risks.

The reason clients hire Pros DIT(s) are for the unknown factors that they don't know, other wise they don't need you.

They expect us to know the bugs, and not learn on their dimes.

Learn on your own dimes and times.

I was talking about total lunches budget not one day.

Ok, as far as my name and Member status here, how is that relevant? I don't post here much because I'm not a RED owner. I more come here to add some perspective to the "owner gets bashed for problems with cameras they buy" conversations. It gets old, it really does. Sure some people make user errors but there comes a time when you have to get real. I don't see libraries of threads dedicated to people complaining about malfunctions of their Arriflex 35 or Mitchell 35. Tells me that there might be something to the posts.

I'd like to add that I find it interesting that you can be so free with your tongue when you don't even post your real name. We have no way to know if you have any real credentials or any way for you to be held accountable for your actions by being recognized by potential industry professionals that want to avoid you. I really would recommend that this forum become a real name only community. Having professional accountability might make some a little less likely to spout comments that could haunt them.

As far as the last comment I quoted, let's figure that out. If you're on a three week feature shoot, that works out to $3,809/day for 80k and you said that's not even enough for some of the projects you've worked on. Are you having truffles imported? What exactly would constitute spending $4k + for food in a day? I would question the validity of a project that would throw money away like that. It seems more like a philantrophic amateur producing and not a sound professional. That's the problem with trying to sound like a big deal...you wind up sounding foolish.

I think everyone needs to stop what they are doing and watch this right now.

Now I heard about that shoot.

First the genie broke down and since they had rigged a wall of wendy's they had to wait for the back up to arrive and as it did it unfortunately was only a 100K, since that was all they could find in the small town (that still was 2.5hrs away) next to the shoot.

So they had to rethink and ended up with 2 lights and tighter lenses, so you can't really see that there was 1000 extras there, but there was.

4 camera mags jammed so they ended up with only one mag. That was the 200 feet handheld one, the DP had with him himself. So after 2min of shooting time, changing mags was a painful 10 min wait.

The artist himself Mr Ben U Lava, often mistaken as Benny Lava (just don't mentioned it to him), had a fit and they had to wait for 7 hrs for him to decide what shade of brown his chinos should have.

Finally on set the playback didn't work. The playback operator had forgotten a cable so they had to improvise and actually sing live (I heard post production had a hard time in the edit and they had to stretch a few shoots here and there).

Now apparently the catering bug started to go around and yet again production had to stop and wait for (allegedly) the DP to actual go and change. After that there was no more handheld and they had to reduce to static shots only.

By the time dawn started the genie arrived from a 25 hrs drive from Mumbai or Bombay as it's also called. They could finally hook up for the grande finally with all the wendy's. Just as it was up and running and the DP was crying because it was the highlight of his photography career.... his dog peed on the genie and the whole set went black.

The DP was crying but, now from the ash left overs of his dog (now that actually happened).

Now if only they hadn't used that BETA version of........

If you're on a three week feature shoot
???

Hum... Features, 90-120 pages script, 6 days working week, = 6.6 pages per day?

Shooting 6.6 pages a day?

You must be a real Pro alright, a pro mad man.

???
What exactly would constitute spending $4k + for food in a day?
???

Have you try feeding 500+ Extras in Euros right now at the current exchange rates for 4-8 weeks?

Morons.

I'll take a break now.

This one look good.

OK!

There was plenty of reasons to upgrade for build 16 and by the time Big Lu did so most issues with it had been straightened out.

I don't think it's right to go on a fit against that, since there can be a million reasons for doing so. As he states they were fully aware of the build being beta etc.

Unfortunately he had other issues that led to camera breakdown, this was not really a 16 issue. The camera got scrambled for other reasons and that was what made him feel cheated and therefor he took out his frustration in this forum. In doing so he realized that maybe it was a little to strong especially since he can't back up his allegations (for whatever reasons).

So why don't you guys go and chill and leave this alone, this is getting really booooring.
