  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Not upgrading to Weapon

What they should definitely do though, is extend the 3rd party support to the current DSMC line :)
Offhollywood already announced an Epic Scarlet Version of their new modules - but Jarred's announcement was specifically mentioning Weapon:

We are opening up official module support for Weapon to select 3rd parties... something I am very excited about.

This is a very hard day for me, i'm still some kind of shocked.. I also have a hard time writing this, because I owe my possibillities to make movies to RED, was a strong proponent of all things RED and was very happy first with my Scarlet, then with my EPIC..
wonderfull tools that enabled me... i updated to Dragon last month because of the hint to upgrade before NAB.. and i really was psyched to upgrade to weapon with all that
new usefull stuff (prores, hdmi 2.0, etc pp.. that i was expecting from a new body in 2015) and a future outlook to be able to use VV and upgrade to all the wonderfull stuff the future brings..

But now as it seems, this has suddenly gone very wrong.. as it looks now, i payed 9500 USD upgrade to get a 15500 USD rebate, so my wonderful and perfektly working EPIC MX was in reality devalued to 6000 USD..
The Magnesium Weapon is as it seems right now not upgradeable to VV in the Future.. so i have to pay 34000 USD for the CF upgrade to stay updatable in the future, with the additional need to replace most of the stuff i have (Power Adapters, Modules, Rig)
For a lot of useful new features for shure, but nothing that is related to Picture quality itself or stuff that i really have a extreme urge for.. another 9500 like before.. a no brainer, but 34k???

So, this feels to me like RED is no longer interested in the Indy Operator/Owner anymore.. i would have burned to follow along in the future, but at these summs, i just cant, its not feasable nor possible..
Thanksfully i have a prefect Camera (My Epic Dragon) that will suit me for years to come, but cut me out of future updates by creating
so expensive models (Why no Aluminium?) and valueing my freshly upgraded Dragon so little, just let me still in shock

I very much hope i'm wrong with my assessment, because i really want to stay a part of the family.
But i felt in love with the RED that shattered the industry with a 17500 USD Camera that was no possible.. where are you?

I did the upgrade from Epic-X to Dragon before NAB. Because of all the Teasers. With Weapon and the Upgrade-Path as it stands now, I would not have done the same thing.

This is pretty much the way I see it.

I honestly think they are out of touch with their market base and in the world of private planes, Porches, trust fund fanbois and rich hobbyists.

Yes. As of this time Magnesium is not going to offer 8K because only the CF version is prebuilt with the processor 8K ready. I say 'as of this time' because I guess as we know things can change.

Everything changes - even the current Upgrade Program. Early adopters get bragging rights to the newest technology but, long-term, there is no way RED is leaving 90% of their customers off the 8K bus. Wait, watch and keep the faith.

Sorry I am shooting all week and am struggling to read everything in RU....IS there a frame rate boost or not?.

Doesn't look like it but we are all waiting for Phil to come down off the mountain with his Tablets of Knowledge ;-)

i must have missed this. Magnesium Weapon is the end of the road upgrade wise?

It appears they only put the (untapped) horsepower needed for the V,V 8k sensor in the CF Weapon. So unless they allow new boards/asics etc. with a future upgrade, then the Mag Weapon appears to be Dormie.

Thanks Zeb, hope is the last to die..

i was always: 'they would never do that to us'

You are right Elsie. And sadly I find Carbon way too Vuitton for my tastes. I am sure Bono would like it though:) Cue someone saying that you have to put the 8K in carbon due to heat displacement.

Jarred DID say there would be a way for people to jump/upgrade within Weapons down the line (it's in one of those thousands of pre-NAB threads). You can fully expect the cost to be just as painful to make the intra-Weapon upgrade as it is for the inter-RED body upgrades right now.

Heres to hoping....

this will be the first time we won't jump on the upgrade...our three dragons will remain what they are. We're out on this one as well...I am also confused by the lack of hdmi 2.0 and 4k out...
