  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No excuse for 5K@24P on Scarlet

The tools I have are way more then my craft, so my scarlet is challenging me as a DP and Director. I'm going to worry about 4k somewhere in late 2013 when I start doing test for my next film, if someone right now NEEDS to make a 4k film ... they should get an epic.

i have a hard time understanding some people here as well...scarlet files (in 4k or 3K) are more then enough for any application....i need to pull stills from the footage and that is where every pixel counts...and higher frame rate gives me shorter exposure which gives me sharper files which......i see dragon or epic in my future....
regardless...according to the big boss it's all about 4K now, which really means 5K capture and scarlet does not work within that mindset....

Well, there is the "old 4K " and the "new 4K "

The industry is rapidly changing what 4k really means. In the old film scan days 4k meant 4096 photosites taking true RGB samples all the way. Sure, the film had grain and the nature of film made everything a little fuzzy but the scanner was really trying to get the real RGB data.
More recently 4k meant the sensor has 4096 across, but bayer pattern was excusable in this case so you really don't get the same resolution as the scanner did. You get slightly above 3K, as in the case with the Scarlet with it's 4K motion picture capability.

Enter the new game in town: 4K television sets with 3840 as the horizontal resolution. But these television sets have 11,520 effective light emitters in the horizontal direction, so they're getting the real resolution and I mean real 3840.
Houston we have a problem! If you want to make 4K footage you better have real 4K capabilities or something pretty close to it.

When the camera is locked down with a good lens under good conditions it should make very close to 4K is my belief. Let's get as close to that as possible shall we?

My opinions.

SCARLET will be 6K for 3K eventually. For a while, I thought the Scarlet will go away, but I can't see RED decommissioning this gateway drug. I think the whole upgrade issue around ASICs/DRAGON needs resolution before RED will make any fundamental changes, but the roadmap is clear to me.

Framerates and price will be the only difference between Scarlet and EPIC. Not resolution.

And about all the ASIC woodoo....

You guys keep ignoring the fact that while Epic ASIC is different from Scarlet ASIC - they are based on the same technology and design.
....
Peter

I don't think that is a fact (that they are different)

Im sorry thats incorrect ,it does 4khd and 4k , ws doesnt appear again til 2k...

And I stand corrected - You are right. The available resolutions on the most current build are:

1K WS
1K HD
2K WS
2K HD
2K
3K HD
3K
4K HD
4K
5K ANA
5K WS
5K 2:1
5K HD
5K

My bad...

Peter

Hey, we all need 5K 24p to win the race:) the point that epic became less expensive is more than a reason to pump scarlet up a little bit to leave competitors behind ...4,5K WS and 5K 24p a hand full of more frames or a burst mode :D

keep in mind.... you have to feed your fans...all day...bit by bit...thanks from a german red lover;) dont do it like apple ;)hehe

Something doesn't add up in my mind: I read in another thread that Scarlet can be upgraded to Dragon, which is 6K, means the hardware can handle it, why it cannot handle 5k 24fps?, unless the frame rate with the dragon will be 6k, 6 fps or something like that, which is unpractical from any point of view, something just doesn't make sense.

There would have to be processing upgrades also for scarlet, not just the sensor
