  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

News from Cool Lights

So, here is another example of 100% LED shoot without cheating (No sun light)!

Unfortunately i didn't have my Coollights CL600 Softboxes (forgot them at home... duh!) so the lighting could be better but nobody complained.

Camera settings were the same as in the previous post. 3K 2:1 60FPS

Thanks for sharing your samples. What lenses, T-Stop, Shutter speed, and ISO were you shooting at?

Also when you say 60p- do you mean 25p at 60 fps (Slow motion), or a project base of 59.97?

I used the RED 18-50, RED 50-150 and the Duclos-Tokina 11-16. T-stop was mostly 4 to 5.6.

I shot 60 fps (high speed) for a 25fps project and the shutter was 180' degrees. ISO was 400.

Both shoots had exactly the same settings-setup.

Thanks for the specifics- nice work. :)

Miltos- some questions for you-

Light Related-
- Did you use the spot or flood version in those examples?
- Where they daylight balanced or tungsten balanced? (I'm guessing that they are daylight)
- What kind of actual run time are you getting out of the batteries?

Camera Related-
- It looks like you set the white balance at 5000k- is that correct?
- How was the noise in the high speed stuff?

One more light related question-

How many lights were you using?

Richard,

I was just looking at the site, and I noticed that the gels / filters come standard with the light now (that is great), I was wondering what the filter compensation for each gel is - how much do they decrease the total light output? (I'm specifically interested in the diffusion panel, but would be interested to know about the minus green too.)

Great- thanks for the info. :)

4 Spots and 2 Floods but 2 of the spots were diffused.

All daylight balanced but in the second post some of them were fitted with the CTO filter.

- What kind of actual run time are you getting out of the batteries?

I never had to use one until the battery completely dried out but i used one for 50 minutes without problem and the battery indication was showing 2 more lines (RED BRICK).

4800k to be exact

- How was the noise in the high speed stuff?

I only noticed noise in one shot and it was mostly redcode compression noise (chicken feet on the blue channel). If we could use REDCODE42 with 60fps in 3K i am sure it would be better but i can't say it was much of a problem.

I recently received my LED600s and they are great lights in so many ways. I will try to post a more detailed impression.

I only have the spot version. How do you like the flood version?

Pete

In my opinion if you have at least one type of CL600 you MUST have at least one of the other as well. Each has it's usage and it gives you more choices.

At the beginning i thought i would mostly use the spots but i was wrong. I find them both very useful. They are both very bright but the flood has a wider angle, is slightly softer and is easier to use as a fill light depending on the space you are shooting.

I have been in touch with Richard for a long time about his lights, and is great to see him progress so much, and surely looking for the big ones like the 2500, as I have been extremely serious in changing my entire lighting package to LED, and I had started doing this with an other company, which unfortunately for them, tucked advantage of me, and disrespected me, so time to order my first CoolLight LED, and hopefully I like what it will do for me, and will build up from here, the 600 will be the first, then I'll report.

Hi Ketch,

Thanks for your support!

Well thank you for building such great lights at very reasonable prices, I see a 2010 coming were I might just have a TONE of your LED fixtures, shooting in a GREEN environment for me is not only about shooting against a GREEN SCREEN, is about doing what I can to preserve our only Planet, and LED allows to play a very big role in Filming while incredibly reducing energy consumption and less pollution from not having to use those HUGE generators.

I'm planning to shot our first Motion Picture entirely using LED fixtures.

Will see after we shoot some tests, but I'm confident I can do it no problem, as I was very happy shooting the Garbo Trailer with only 4 LED's.

So bring those nice looking Led RING and 2500 along and you will have a sure customer right here Richard.
