  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Newer REDCINE-X posted...

That may be great but its not an option for many of us. We are already stretching from the last price jump to 4750 (cheapest package, fixed).

Really looking for practical solutions without the rocket. Will resort to in camera debayering if I have to.

I trust many small shops will offer super affordable Red Rocket Transcoding rates for Scarlet Fixed users... we already do :)

Hi Tim, how would that work? Especially if some clips needed a tweak in one direction and other clips in a different way.

If you are in the NW, I would recommend that you stop by Indent- they are doing things that no one else is doing. They are building a great studio, and Red post facility that is friendly for both large budget and indi budget productions. Great people. :)

Can you define tweak? do you mean one light color grading?

I mean you can tweak the stills now in RedcineX and determine your exposures and "looks" why do you need playback for that?...

Because color grading for delivery usually happens AFTER transcoding...

for Indies, we are preparing a DIY transcode station for Red Rocket so low budget guys can get 4K FULL DEBAYER transcodes to Proress 422 or bette ryet prores 4444 if their systems can handle the latter...and for like $20 hr depending on how low the budget.

as they both maintain some nice latitude for grading when transcoded with the rocket... and especially so for prores4444.

Need more information like what NLE you use, etc... most indies we know use FCP. etc...

@ Ryan Walters- thanks man, you are too kind!

Hopefully as Scarlets go mainstream the price of a ROCKET will go down a few K.

I'm definitely in the market for one, though atm it's a little out of my range.

Just a thought: with updates coming so fast for REDCINE-X, it might be a good feature to let it automatically check for updates. And if there is a newer version out there, show me a changelist and ask me to download and install it (by the app). Lots of applications I use have this feature build in and I find it quite useful to keep my apps up to date this way.

@Tim, wish you had a shop on the east cost. Can you PM me any recommendations you might have for rcoket transcodes in NYC?
BTW - I noticed that prores 4444doesn't hold super whites and sub blacks when I take it to color but proresHQ does.

We stopped using Avids for similar reasons. Every time we turned around there was another big chunk of cash that needed to be spent just to keep things working properly(fast/crash free). So, we migrated four edit stations and four laptops to FCP and have been happy with that decision for the past several years. When it came time to buy new cameras I sorta stuck my neck out for Red Ones and got the cameras and I'm still glad I did. But, I can't get any more cash to buy anything to speed up rendering. So now I try to explain that the render times are worth the quality trade. For the most part that is accepted as reasonable. But, now the render times are killing some of our deadlines. So much so that it is becoming tough to get to use the Reds because "we can't afford the turn around time on this one". So, I have to use our old cameras on most projects. Which is not too bad. But, I am already spoiled by the quality of the Reds. I hope thing get better soon so I can say it was the right choice for us. But, for now, the jury is still out. As I type this I am looking over at a clip I started to render at 7am this morning. It is now 9:41 and the clip is only at %10. And I thought my old Lightwave 3D renderings took a long time. Serenity Now, serenity now!:nopity:

I know this will be like a harsh violin screeching in Jim's ears but thank god they are introducing in-camera debayering.
There is a time and a place for all the beauty and options of RAW and there is also a need for shooting with minimal post time.

If the mx sensitivity and DR sets these camera's head and shoulders above the competition, we may even see cinematographers opting FOR in-camera debayering because this means they retain control over the 'look' instead of handing over so much power(flexibility) to the people in post.

I'd love to see a bundled Red Rocket and Scarlet package with a similar discount to the sensor upgrade bundle. This would be a great incentive to get folks working at a faster pace right out of the gate and avoid the render times that are unfamiliar to filmmakers use to working in 1080p native formats as opposed to 3K.

That has already been happening with the Arri D21 for the last year and a half. Of course, in the case of the D21, it is also much more convenient to record to a video format in part because the RAW output is uncompressed, and thus requires a lot of storage and a specific approved recording system (S.two, Codex).

I haven't seen this asked yet, though it may have been in a different forum, and not that I am ungrateful by any means (REDCINE-X rocks!), but are there plans to include video out support for HD-SDI on AJA and Blackmagic cards? I know, I know, buy a RR already...wish I could.

Keep rocking it guys!

None at the moment. Our plate is very full just keeping up with rocket.

Deanan, can't wait until the Rocket can output other [non-RED] stuff over HD-SDI so I can start emptying slots! Assuming it's in the cards, of course.

buh-doom-tsk!

if they play their cards right we'll all get what we want.

Love this thing.

It should be possible in theory but we have so much to do that it's tough getting to that one before other stuff gets added.

Deanan,

Would you consider for the next build the option of choosing between 8 bits and 16 bits TIFS ? Because a lot of apps or plugins (in the case of AE for instance) don't deal with 16-bits tifs or 10 bits dpx. And as the Adobe plugin doesn't seem to be on the to-do list before the end of the year, it would allow people to do a 1-light correction with FLUT and edit afterwards easilier.

Thanks !

AE certainly will deal with 16 bit tiffs and 10-bit DPX files. It's had that ability for as long as I can remember.

This is a great tool!

Thanks for putting the time and effort into build 96 I'm loving it!

Any chance of adding a Waveform vector display?

Dave

Jim,

redcine x not only is great, it has a future full of joy! Lift, gamma, gain, support for wave control surface, performance getting better...i am so gratefull, you are making this more fun every time. A big thank you to the whole team for your work and patience, looking fordward to upgrade my camera. Really.

wave control surface? I'm looking forward to the iPad control surface!!!
