  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Newer REDCINE-X posted...

That´s fine. We understand this. Wouldn´t be smarter not to discontinue a product that actually works until the new one works at least as good as the old one.

I think the new one is way better... color science to begin with. REDCINE was done with the cooperation of Assimilate. That cooperation has ended as it relates to REDCINE. Get over it. There is no more support or updates coming for REDCINE. If you want to get an updated REDCINE, buy the new Scratch system. It is really good. We highly recommend it. If you want a free app... it is REDCINE-X. Pretty simple to understand.

Jim,

redcine x not only is great, it has a future full of joy! Lift, gamma, gain, support for wave control surface, performance getting better...i am so gratefull, you are making this more fun every time. A big thank you to the whole team for your work and patience, looking fordward to upgrade my camera. Really.

So as someone considering spending $5000 on a scarlet fixed, I have to ask, will future updates to redcine x allow it to process 3K (or 5K) without a RED Rocket card
on something like and iMac?

J.,

That future is already here. Churning away nicely on a powerbook; the iMac is even more powerful. So as long as you don't expect real time full res debayering, you will be fine.

Whew, I'll survive without real time full res. Thanks for the heads up Martin.

If you have a sec, can u drop any basic figures?
(basic like x gig of data took y hrs at so and so gHz)

Well let's see now. I'm rendering a file that was shot at 4KHD, 49.68GB in size that I've already rendered with RedAlert at half standard debayer which produced a 66.56GB file. I'm now rerendering the file for a comparison in RedCine-X and started at 1:30 am and at 9:04 am the progress of the rendering shows 30% completed. I am on a 2.8GHz Quad-core, with 16GB of RAM. That is without a RedRocket.

UPDATE: 11:00 am, the rendering is at 38% complete.
UPDATE: 12:00 pm, the rendering is at 42% complete.
UPDATE: 1:00 pm, the rendering is at 46% complete.
UPDATE: 2:10 pm, the rendering is at 50% complete.

How long of a file (timewise) is the file that you are rendering. Coming from an HVX/Redrock existence, I have no baseline for file sizes for the R3D...YET.

Thanks!

Keep the updates coming. I'm interested in the final result.
Are you using the machine to do other things? (as that may slow down the processing)

Was not using the machine to do other things. However, I gave up after about 15 hours. As you can see, it was rendering about 4% of the file, per hour, so I would guess that I was looking at 24 hours for rendering the one file. I can't do that, so I cried "uncle".

I wanted to get a comparison of the file sizes and it's pretty staggering. The file at 50% of completion is now at 123GB in size. Some quick interpolation looks like instead of 1.01TB of rendered files after the half-standard render, it'll be more like 4TB at full rez.

One problem, I quit the rendering and opened the file to have a look. It looks great, but there's no sound during playback. Not sure why that is, anyone know?

However, I've decided Jim is definitely right, I do want to re-render things at full rez. The difference is pretty dramatic. Even though I'm only outputting to 1080p, some of the files need to be upscaled before final output, and it would be best to have those in full rez so I don't lose any detail.

Only question now is, how to pay for a RED Rocket™, because I can't spend the next three months rendering files. I'm just wondering how much time the Rocket will save with my configuration.

Once you have put a RED Rocket™ in the box... you'll never be the same. :-)

With Rocket, the 35min clip would render between 30-35 minutes on a recent mac tower with a downscale from 4k to 1080P. We were very aggressive with pricing in a upgrade bundle because we believe it should be more accessible to everyone.

Audio is added as a second pass to the encoding so if the video pass was aborted, the audio pass doesn't happen.

That bundle price is seriously kick ass! Thank you... as one who uses Red Rocket EVERY SINGLE DAY... and was even told by Mike Most that I wasted my $ buying it as no apps support it... WRONG

BEST VALUE of ANY RED PRODUCT... save the BODY which holds the sensor...

Jim is not blowing smoke here.. I truly cannot imagine RED life without RR anymore...

transcoding with a DIT who is new to RR is now my favorite thing to witness... :)

find a way to buy it... or take advantage of our incredibly cheap transcode rates...

Deanan,

Thanks, I was thinking it must be something like that. As for the "upgrade bundle", I must have missed something, the RR sells for $4,750.00 on red.com. What upgrade are you talking about?

That may be great but its not an option for many of us. We are already stretching from the last price jump to 4750 (cheapest package, fixed).

Really looking for practical solutions without the rocket. Will resort to in camera debayering if I have to.

Just did another calculation, think I'm right, so bear with me. The files are a series of interviews which are about 12 hours long. With the Red Rocket, it would take 12 hours to debayer at full rez. With my current setup, it's going to take me over 85 DAYS, round the clock to do the same rendering.

It is what it is. To get the best quality, it's going to painful, one way or the other. I just get to decide which kind of pain I prefer.
