  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Workstation Build - i7 X99, Titan X, Overclocking...

Davinci should have Cineform as export options. If not Adobe does. If you install the latest Avid Codec's LE then you should have DNxHR options in Adobe atleast if not Davinci. Davinci 12 may have DNxHR already there but I havent seen it yet. BTW I meant "not lower the quality" above but my typing is poor as of late:)

With the Public Beta 2 of Davinci Resolve 12 I can convert to DNxHR 444 or HQ 10bit, which plays smooth in Resolve. I have the option for Cineform RGB 16-bit and YUV 10-bit, but I get an error when it starts encoding: "The video format is not supported."

I might stick to DNxHR for now! Do you think DNxHR HQ 10bit is overkill for H264 files? Should I go HQ 8bit or even SD? Thanks again!

It's possible to export DNxHR from latest versions of Resolve 11, and I suppose from V12 also.

The Cineform encoding has issues in 11 as well. I suspected you might have trouble with that which is why I mentioned DNxHR. 8 bit is fine for H264 where 10 bit is good if you are going to composite or grade significantly.

Awesome thanks for everything Eric!

I just received my Areca ARC-1883i and 6 x 6TB Seagate SAS 12Gbps. I was wondering what cables do I need to plug the hard drives to the Areca, and what do you use to power the drives, I only have SATA power cables with my EVGA PSU?

Would something like that work?:

The below item list is the SAS to Sata fan cable if using sata drives as most do. That should also work with those Seagate drives that are SAS according to Seagate's white papers on those drives.

[h=2]CB-43SA-1M SFF-8643 Internal HD MiniSAS to 4 SATA Breakout Cable[/h]

I think I need a SAS cable for those drives not sata, so it'd be this one:

CB-4382P-75 SFF-8643 Internal HD MiniSAS to SFF-8482 Internal SAS + Power (4-Pin) Cable

@Jeff, what cables do you use for the drives to the Areca and to power them with the EVGA 1300?

Can anyone explain to me the reason for the INTERNAL SAS RAID. We are just doing simple editing and working off 8 bay raids with up to 1300 mbps. Im getting ready to build a very similer setup to this. Just wondering what everyone is using and WHY youre using it.

Storage size, speed. that is about it. Hardware RAID 0 striping on enterprise level SAS drives all working together as one. Priceless!

I use mine for 3D laser scan point cloud models. the sheer amount of data that has to pass for hundreds of millions of points in point files takes time to read and write. This setup is nice for my RED files and editing in Premiere but I have just upped my productivity from my last build (Hexcore 3960X build) by about a factor of 3 or 4. For me, that makes it a no-brainer.......

So much so that I am in the process of assembling another one just like it for my techs to use.

Are you installing all your programs on these drives or are they only for project files?

We are switch drives from computer to computer. So if it was for project files it almost wouldnt work for us.

That SAS cable would be the 1 for SAS only drives. According to Seagate the SAS drives you have will run with SAS or Sata fan cables. So either cable set would work.

Got it thank you Eric! Regarding Thunderbolt as soon I shutdown the workstation I have to reboot ~6 times before being able to see my Pegasus volume, this morning I already restarted ~10 times and still nothing... Any ideas why that could happen?

Did you turn AIC support off yet? Also did you get a prompt in Windows regarding a TB device that needs to be authorized?

I just checked the BIOS and it looks like it has been updated, the Thunderbolt settings are all different, I didn't do any BIOS update, is that automatic? I don't see any AIC support option anymore, here are some screenshots:

Ya that is different. Haven't seen some of those settings before. Turn of Wake from Thunderbolt devices and change the security level to normal mode w/o NHI. Save and exit and see if the Thunderbolt device initializes each time.

I did the changes but still no luck after 5 reboots, I don't how those settings changed. It seems that the Thunderbolt Specification Version was previously 1.1 and now bumped to 1.6.
