  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW WC clamp on mattebox look super rad

I bought one too.

Not a huge fan of the adapter rings. Pretty small 'lip' to attach to and I find them way to tight. I would have preferred them at least 1mm smaller, maybe two.

I feel the matte box should slide on pretty easily (as it does on the 16-35 f4 IS for instance) and then you can clamp down. On the 24-70 f2.8 II or any of the adapter rings it's a struggle even with the clamp wide open.

Are you using the 4x5.65? That is the size WC suggests for wide angle lenses. What kind of filters are you guys using with this?

No, I already had a Lee Filters 4x4 kit that I'm using for stills and video, so I went with 4x4.

I actually bought this matte box to be primarily used with my little XC-10, with the added benefit of getting a 67mm adapter ring for my Sigma 35mm Art that I never bought for my Lee kit.

Used 4x5.65 - 95mm with an optical flat for macro work involving liquids and with a glimmer glass on steadicam shots on Friday.

So far, one of my favorite little purchases of 2016...

it's really a must for any dp, operator, or camera assistant to just have in their bag waiting to work.

makes life more chill, fun, and less Tapey.

Used our a bit more now before it went out on a project in the states. Not possible to stack two filters in there as i see it. But its for sure much easier to tape a filter onto the front of this thing than trying to tape filters onto a lens. So simply put one filter in the zipbox, then just put gaffertape around / over the edge on the second filter and cake it on to the front. Then the filters have some rubber between them and its fairly easy to take off tge front filter, much unlike when gaffer tape it straight to the lens.

But I would love if they made one with slots for two filters. Another cool thing would be all rubber mattebox where a front part could spin to cut refelctions etc.

Used the 4x4 80-85 some more today.

Still slips beautifully onto the Canon 16-35mm f4 IS (77mm thread). Won't fit Sigma Art lenses with 77mm thread. Obviously won't fit Canon 24-70 f2.8 II with 82mm thread.

It fits its own adapters just like a really snug bike tyre fits a rim—the one where you're supposed to use three tools, but you insist on using your fingers for 20 minutes while swearing. The design of the clamp is such that when tightened down it kind of presses the matte box away and off of the lens because the clamp is close to the hood and the rubber lip that goes on the lens or adapter is smallish.

It's not that it actually will fall off, but I can't help to feel the design of my particular size is a lost opportunity. Good idea and price but abysmal experience so far.

I agree with Andree, I bought the adapter rings and I wish they had a bit more surface to hold onto... Right now the ring is about 4mm deep, if it were 7-8mm it would be about perfect. One issue I have with the ring being so thin is that some of my lenses travel when zooming, and the thin adapter rings don't keep the rubber of the Zip Box far enough away from the non-moving front of the lens (hard to explain, but basically the Zip Box limits the moving portion of the lens)

Overall though, dirt cheap and functional! Nice piece of kit to keep stuffed into a pouch on your bag just in case!
