  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW WC clamp on mattebox look super rad

That's a very attractive price, but I think using the flexible rubber lens shade to hold the filter in place is a bad idea. Any kind of pressure on the edges of the shade could cause your $300+ filter to pop out and break. Over time, it will stretch and become loose. I like the design of the Atom better, hard plastic edges and a spring loaded clamp with keep the filter secure better than flexible rubber.

for sure, but its like 7X the price right?

true true, but I dont think anyone using a $99 matte box is using $300 filters, just sayinnnnn ;)
 
If i'm not mistaken, Bright Tangerine has a similar style "soft" matte box, and i've put it through hell. Never had any problems with filters falling out, even when double stacking

That's the Atom, as you know it has a hard plastic frame that the filter slips into and is held in place by a spring-loaded clip. It's a good design, filters are safe in it. The soft part is just the removable rubber lens shade, it doesn't hold the filters in at all. You can simply pull it off if you want and not affect the filters.

I'm open to trying the WC Zip Box - who knows, it might work fine. But it just doesn't seem well thought out to me.
 
I really like the idea of these. I have the Atom, but I will be buying these too.
Also I would suggest a version for 2 filters. One that only works right when you pop 2 filters. That's what I have most of the time...

I ordered one of these, As I find my self tape filters onto lenses all the time when using the ronin. And from looking at the WD video it looks like it would be possible to squeeze two filters in there even if it's only made for one. Just some tape dots in between the filters in the corners so they don't scratch each other and then hopefully the rubber is flexing enough to hold two. Will see when I get it, End of september they say but I guess that will be delayed as always.

Michael from Wooden Camera and just wanted to chime in on any concerns with the Zip Box. We love the response we've been getting from people and we're looking at different options for our V2. Two stage has definitely been at the top of the list! We have had some concerns that the filter might slip out and fall when it's that high up, or the rubber might get loose and drop the filter. The Zip Box is designed to grip the filter tight. The rubber doesn't let it move unless you are putting a good amount of pressure on it. There is also a pretty sizable lip on the Zip Box which prevents the filter from falling out, even if for some reason it got loose.
 
I have an OBox and this actually looks much more secure to me. The OBox has this "feature" that allows the filters to slide lower in the frame, for positioning grad filters. Unfortunately there is no lower stop so it is possible for filters to slide all the way through. I like the WC approach better. At this price you could get a couple and leave them on the ND that are in play.

Are these still planning on shipping at the end of the month? I have a feature I'm shooting Oct 10th and Id love to get one for that.
 
Misfit Atom all the way.... for one, you don't have to put your fingers all over the filter to insert it or remove it. The filter is held in securely and is easy to remove. The Atom has a removable rubber shade, can add a top flag when needed, and can clamp on to any diameter lens with the additional clamp rings. It's really hard to beat the Misfit Atom and it's really well built. Not to mention their other products. The Atom is far more versatile than this piece and surely is better suited for shooting. I personally don't like manhandling my filters on set and having to clean them every time I insert or remove them.

Not sure what you mean by plastic frame? The Misfit Atom is anodized aluminum and doesn't have any plastic... you can beat it up without worry.
 
Got mine today. Its so good so may only thought was, why are matt boxes made in any other material than rubber?

My only mistake was I did only order one of them, now when I got it I wish I bought them all with all the step up rings etc.

as it´s only rubber and so slim its easy enough to just toss one in the lens case as it does not scratch the lenses or anything. And the rubber snugs the filter really nicely. It went straight out on a job over the weekend so I did not get the chance to test if I could squeeze two filters in there I think you can and for sure if you got one filter in it it will stay in there no problem, it will not fall out no matter what you do and it´s still really easy to get the filters in and out.

Love it.

This looks really nice... And wooden camera have been putting out quality products no doubt.

But Having used BT's Matte Boxes for the past several years, well since their first Strummer actually, my vote would go to the Misfit Atom!

I can say that the Misfit is an insanely great little Box and the Atom allows it's use with any and all lenses (unless I need to cover the HUGE zooms with 6x6) it's extremely lightweight and built very tough, the fact that the filters are super easy placed and replaced leaving the filters pristine and fingerprints free is an other plus.

The 5 Warranty it's nice as well... :)
