  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

oh well, we shouldn't be using PC's anyway...

:)

PCs is a good thing. You let the competition to fight for you and you build it the way you want. If there wasn't IBM's incredible mistake (who opened the architecture) now a personal computer (IBM, Apple or whatever) would cost a fortune!

Sure.

Just back from holidays... this is the best present I can think to find...
can't wait tomorrow to go to office and see it in his glorius 2k version!
Thanks Jeff, Jarred & Jim!

apple osx runs on pcs today.
as did nextstep before.

Not really. While OSX does run on a Linux core and Intel chips, it cannot be installed on any ol' PC hardware natively without an insane amount of hacking.

Regardless, OS 10.5 Leopard will run Windows at native speed via Boot Camp. So when that's released, there'll be no real reason to buy a PC anymore, except the fact that they're cheaper. ;-)

Being one of the many who can't playback ProRes (even though I have both PC and Mac), I anxiously look forward to a 2k version I can take to work and view on our 1080p monitors. (I've gotten all the people I work with pretty damn excited about Red!)

apples computers are regular ibm pc.
x86 architecture.
nothing else, nothing different.

apple doesn´t want osx, as of yet, to run on custom built or other manufacturers computers. to install osx on a pc not manufactured by apple however is fully possible, and here are several users who run their fcs on non-apple pcs. however, for us as a company, that is not an option, as apple forbids that in their license.

That is, sadly, completly wrong.
This perception is problematic, and i have sen it expressed several times here on this board.
i would recommend to change it, as it will prevent co-operation and understanding of most of the more powerful pcs used for 4k - since many years.

Almost all the flagships of all leading manufacturers don´t run on apple.
And that is exactly the reason why, as example, Crossing the line hasn´t been onlined on Apple - even when it was edited on fcp.

just partial short list of pc-windows/linux only systems and applications which are marketleader or dominant forces in their respective marketspaces, that won´t run on the mac with or without bootcamp, paralells etc.

discreet flame/inferno (4k)
discreet smoke/fire (4k)
discreet lustre (4k)
quantel iQ (4k)
quantel pablo (4k)
avid DS nitris (4k)
bbc/cinegy (4k)
da vinci resolve
da vinci revival
da vinci 2k+ / splice
assimilate scratch (4k) - luki mentioned it could be portet it in the future
sony king cobra
filmlight northlight (4k)
dvs clipster (4k multichannelrealtime, dci delivery)
dvs pronto (4k)
dvs hydra (4k)
the list indeed much longer, but i suppose that gives the idea.

the propietary application one wins when using apple is fcs.
The price/performance of that package is really very good.
However, sadly, color and fcs are limited to 2k.
Also, FCS sadly only is 8bit RGB.

So, for most of the people and companies doing dci/35mm online and 4k since many years, moving to this platform as of yet would be a huge step backward.

I do warn - a poll of ~160 users here on the board should bring no one to the idea, that fcs is widely used or even dominant in 35mm/dci as mastering system. It is often used as offline editing system, it is often used used as VFX feeder/reader.
another point to consider - we have 7 nles here. i have the impression that most of the votes on these internet polls come from artists & users who only run one system. And our vote, as theirs, is just one vote. SAN basing, networked editing is one of the main differences between larger facilities and smaller boutiques - and it that space, windows/linux basing systems are extremly dominant, as fcs has not much to offer in that aspects (as of yet, they will certainly follow that route more in the future)

But if you want 4k, solid bitdeptht and maybe even realtime on that - one has to use pcs which aren´t build by apple. Hopefully that will change with fcs 3 and maybe a hardware manufacturer will introduce 4k harddware for osx. But there is nothing announced as of yet, however, there are dozens of running and proven solutions on windows and linux.

and don´t get me wrong.
i own final cut. and we use it. and i would use color for 4k mastering if it could do it. but it can´t.
i am for competition.
i am os-agnostic. (ok, no, i admit it, i have soft spot for irix...)
but don´t let you blind by the marketing.
4k realtime mastering is reality - but not on apple computers as today.

It looks like the story is about a man who loses a picture of his loved one and "crosses the line" to retrieve it. I could be wrong, but that is what I gleaned from the trailer.

In a few days there won't be a point to see the trailer at 1080p or 2K because the first RED owners might start uploading some sort samples (ideally) along with their first impressions (under less than perfect situations which might prove more interesting) so I dont mind too much...
Also, there is no doubt that RED can give very high quality footage at these downscale resolutions, so there is nothing new about this anyways...
So its more like a late present. No sample no cry...

Can't Open:

Can't Open:

I just downloaded from JK's mirror...that went well. File was saved to my desktop as what appears to be a quicktime file....has the qt wrapper on it and says movie....as all my qt files.

HOWEVER, i double click on the file adn I get an error message as follows:

The movie could not be opened.
The file is not a movie file

I realize you have to have the latest FCP....my current version is: 6.0 i just now did a software update and see i have several FCP items to download such as:
compressor
FC pro update
Color update

I'm downloading now....but I don't think that will fix my error. Any suggestions? Should i try to open in another application or ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Seems every week i learn something new, and then the software gets updated and me OUTDATED.

Thanks.....

The file you download is NOT a movie file, it's a GZIP compressed archive file. Simply drop the file on the freely available StuffIt Expander (or some other decompression application) and it will extract the movie file.

well...sorry to be the misfit here...but dropped it to my stuffit expander...and got the following message:

"The file "CTL_Trailer.mov" does not appear to be compressed or encoded. The application "QuickTime Player.app" might be able to open this file. Would you like to try opening the file using "QuickTime Player.app"?

So...tried both yes and no on that option.

When I downloaded the file...it showed up as a QT file on my desktop...so it wants to see it as QT....

I'm not sure how i can have screwed that up.

??
Again, thanks,
Johnny

Add the extension ".gz" to the file (accept when the Finder asks for confirmation). Then try again.

I think that will just compress the file to a gzip archive again. Stuffit also does this with zip. If you add .zip or .gz to the end of any file, Stuffit will automatically compress it.

i just added the extention adn dropped to expander---and won't open. In fact does not even show up in expander....as if nothing at all.

Any other possible remedie?

sorry about the trouble.

I don't think so. By changing the extension you don't change the contents of the file, only its name.

- Edit -
Ok, Stuffit Deluxe features the functionality you described. Didn't know that. I haven't got the deluxe version.

Hmmm, I think your file might be corrupt or incomplete then. I suggest you try downloading again.

I don't have the original gz file here any more so I can't tell you its exact size. This might give you a hint if it's an incomplete download. It was about 1.95 GB if memory serves...

i think i'll just try to re-download the whole thing and try again with EXPANDER.

Anyone else able to open with expander?

Thanks again....
johnny

Well, the original file name already had the ".gz" extension and a double click opened expander. All worked fine for me...
