  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I really think that a proper H264 1080p encode can make the clip justice.

That would be a step backwards, IMO. The original clip posted by Jarred is encoded in highest quality Motion JPEG-A at 16mbit/s. It is a production, intraframe compression codec.

H.264 is problematic with gamma shifting issues mentioned earlier.

yeah, a production level codec would be the best.

H.264 is used to author BluRay and HD-DVD titles... It works. It would be nice to see a 1080p H.264 version, derived from the 4K source. Then again, was this trailer cut in 4K or was it cut in 2K ProRes?

Update: 1.8GB... getting close.

I believe the gamma shift problem you attribute to H.264 is specific to particular decoders and viewers, and is not a problem intrinsic to the format. For the purposes of high-quality viewing and online distribution, H.264 is a very good format, perhaps the best currently available as far as quality per bitrate.

Actually, it would be an interesting test to just re-encode the ProRes trailer in H.264 at some reasonable bitrate, and see how much difference is really visible. Any bets on the outcome of that test?

It's Onliiine!!!

Who wants to download it? You can do so by clicking here --> www.mummydust.com/red/CTL_Trailer.mov.gz

This is the same trailer that was released a few days back as a 1K QT. This is the 2K ProRes format, only viewable by people with Final Cut Studio 2 and the ProRes codec.

Would appreciate anyone willing to offer up a mirror or two. I will have a mirror up later tonight, possibly two if there's enough demand.

You need someone to set up a bittorrent server for this. Seriously.

sadly, unusable here.
2 di suites, 5 nles, 1 fcp (v5 on a powerbook).

but fcs 2 users - enjoy.

no joke - if someone in berlin wants to transfer it by tommorow to 2k uncompressed, and watch it on class HD 1 crts - give me a pm. fcs2 bring in equipped notebook required, however.

OK, we wait Jeff!

Not watchable at PC side?

No, not dead. Having some server issues. Not sure if the whole file was uploaded successfully and even though it's there, it claims the file is incomplete or does not exist.

Sorting out technical difficulties... Please don't hold your breath, I don't have a good feeling about this one.

OK..

Download is working now, the file is now a gzip (.gz) archive and that saves just a few bytes. I haven't been able to determine if the 2GB was a factor or not (it's not supposed to be). There are some file ID settings that are hosed on the server and QT / .mov is one of them. I don't have time to troubleshoot them right now with a hosting tech, but will do so in the morning. The file and server are remote to me, I am downloading the file right now via HTTP and it seems to be working. I'm getting about 400KB/sec, so speed is acceptable, but not great. I'm hoping it can sustain at least 150KB/s once people start going after it.

Anyway, go for it if you would like. However, I can't guarantee that the file is good. I haven't got confirmation yet from Jarred if the file size the server reports is good and I won't know if it's good until later tonight when I can play the file. I have to take off in a bit and don't think I'll be around when it finishes.

Edit-> www.mummydust.com/red/CTL_Trailer.mov.gz ...Right click or ctrl/cmd click to save the file. Download at your own risk... the file may not play if it's not complete.
