RED DAY is over and I am one of those who unfortunately couldn't attend. The last 24 hours I realized that it's very difficult to extract information from all the various threads and different websites posting reports because they are all mixed with all sorts of “noise”. :-)

This is an attempt to distil all the RED DAY information. If you were there please add what you learned:

There is a RED EPIC prototype that works and boots in 13.7 seconds. The first EPIC-X cameras will probably start shipping during summer.

There is a RED HMI. Nobody seems to know any specifics about it other than it has something to do with B2pro.

Please continue!

Red HMI:

They will be able to be controlled by te RedMote Pro. DP's will be able to adjust their lighting TTL/viewfinder in real time, with touch screen functionality built it. You will be able to "touch" the talents face, RedMote will then detect which HMI is affecting the selected surface and then a popup slider will allow you to dial in that light.

:)

What do I win for guessing right? :)

(I did not even get to got to RedDay or NAB due to littlest child being ill. So this is based on WILD flight of fancy, based upon the insanity and forward thinking by Red. Or it could be the meds speaking, not sure:)

That would be incredible. Could it be? Dare I dream?

Meryem, thanks for the writeup. I had been looking for a concise summary myself - and I was there!

Ah, actually I saw it reboot in 12 seconds (twice) - and they are still fine tuning the camera... so be careful on establishing specs in that regard.

It is plenty fast, that's for sure.

you're welcome, Brent - I tried to formulate it as if the reader was tagging along...missed a few things that I may go back and edit in, but those 4am write-ups after a few cocktails, urgh. only at NAB...

What a great well written piece. Thanks !

edit:

The cameras, two EPICS and one Mysterium X-enabled RED ONE were focused on a rather unfortunate gothic tableau of a waif-like woman incarcerated in what appeared to be a prison. This slightly surreal selection was designed, I think, to showcase the sensor’s lowlight capabilities.

made me laugh out loud

I'll be loving the 13 second (est.) boot time...when a battery goes down on set and everyone is waiting for a RED to boot up that 90 sec can seem like hours!

VERY Nice writing.....thanks.

Thank you very much Meryem! Please can you elaborate a little more on Michael Cioni's talk. Specifically what did you mean by "success in the future requires an understanding of the speed of these changes in the media landscape" Many thanks!

Michael's talk sounds like something many people who where not there might want to hear. I hope someone recorded it and can post it some where on the web for us. With Michael and RED's blessing, of course.

a good read indeed. The part about Apple not having anything to show really stood out for me. I really hope Apple have something up their sleeve for the near future, and I can't understand how and why they have let Adobe and Avid pass them? I mean in making FCP work better with R3D's....

Michael would be the best person to chime in, when he gets rested up, but my understanding of his talk is that he was addressing the velocity of development between 1999 and 2009 (using numbers to make his point) and making the argument that we are still in the early innings of a game which is still far from over. And the people who will prosper in the shifting paradigm are those who stay in front of what he called "the changing media ecosystem" (how we relate to, and interact with our shifting relationship to our data and its means of production).

Hope this helps. But really, since Michael is a member here and also a very accessible guy, it would be good to engage him about his own ideas. I think I paraphrase fairly well, but paraphrasing almost always involves a level of interpretation (also I was writing this at 4am and promptly ejected my brain hard drive after I finished it, so I'd hate to mis-read based on my loose memory...) that can't quite capture the original texts.

Thanks, y'all for having a look.

I almost caught a flight tuesday night from Long Beach to Vegas for $39. Didn't make it. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing- highlighted by the copious amount of information streaming from the event. I went to REDday in Hollywood, and there was a ton of excitement and it was a blast, but really, the information wasn't worth the gas I burnt in my truck. I think Apple has spoiled me by providing cutting edge information at their events. I need to remember Red is employing a different strategy...
