From EOSHD:

This new anamorphic lens from SLR magic now has an offical pricing, at 799usd it might be of interest.

It is still under final stages of refinement, especially for flare, which was too harsh and sharp in the first versions.

It covers 50mm on full frame although the footage available for now was shot on m4/3.

So something to keep an eye on, alhtough as of now, we have to wait on the new lens flare coating and full frame footage.

M4/3 footage with old flares:

Really cool. I'm positively surprised by the price-point. Lets hope this is good on RED cameras, looking forward to see more.

On m4/3 because of the smaller sensor and crop factor you can go wider.
As in the picture where the anamorphic is screwed on a 35mm taking lens.

As they stated the adapter covers 50mm lens on a full frame sensor.
All you might need is a step ring to match the *supposedely 52mm back screw size (lens back size is 50mm).

But since m4/3 utilizes the best center part of the lens, we must expect a quality loss in the corners compared to the the m4/3 sample posted above.

As soon as some full frame footage is released I will update the thread.
But considering it is new glass with a 1 year warranty at a 799usd price point, it is something to keep an eye on.

haha yeah that is not much of a concern to me either, still want to see to what extent though.

I am much more cautious with the flares, the early version ones are way too sharp and harsh for my liking.
But they got a lot of feedback regarding this and they are working on the coating.

wait and see...

I hope RED has 4k anamorphic on Scarlet ready when this becomes available. ;)

It's a 1.33x adapter, not a 2x anamorphic... As in, it's like the old LA7200 (or Hawk Vlite 1.33x), designed for 16:9 sensors to give a 2.4 (or more accurately, 2.66) crop factor when destretched... No ANA mode required.

Conversely it means flares and bokeh will be half as ovalular as they would be on 2x anamorphics, but something tells me they're dealing with the flares via coatings.

Yeah show me a 2x and we'll have sumptin

this thing does not look very good at all I read here

that it can only resolve 2k resolution so good by to using this on scarlet or epic. Plus any time i have seen cheap lens elements attachments in front of a lens it usually degrades the lens turing your expensive lenses into garbage. Like the lens adapter that have glass in them. As a comparison I feel like this is trying to use a 7d to do the job of an EPIC there just is no substiture for the actual thing.

I own a Century Optics 1.33x and the Panasonic anamorphic adapter and this is looking to be a major step up in quality. The one I'm really waiting for though is the one from Letus Direct that's going to accommodate larger lenses and make for a wider selection for full frame filming. Of course, it would be really awesome if someone could just make a modern 2X anamorphic adapter to really get the full anamorphic effect but 1.33x is easier to work with I suppose. Guess it depends on how popular these new anamorphics get.

If optical perfection is what you're looking for, I'd suggest avoiding anamorphic glass entirely. There are plenty of spherical lenses available that will give you perfect pictures, and at 4K it's not like you need the added resolution that anamorphic offers.

The 1.33x adapters are simply designed for the 16:9 sensors that the vast majority of cameras have. 2x only really works for the 4:3 Alexa sensor (or Red if you want to crop your sensor considerably).

Still why would i put an adapter that only resolves at 2k on my 5k camera dosent make sense. looks like a gimmic for dslr shooters

@Mike P. i get why we actually don't need a anamorphic mode, everything can be done in post. But what i'm not fully understaing right now is, where you see a difference between real anamorphic lenses (1.33) and a lens with this adapter. RED offers 1.33 and 2.0 ana-modes, why wouldn't i want to use the 1.33-mode with a adapter?

BTW, i was thinking EPIC can do it in lower resolutions too, but i was wrong on that, only Dragon can do ana in lower resolutions.

And just to clarify, the blog-entry with the specs (2k) was about the upcoming Letus version, not the SLR magic.
And regarding the SLR magic, have you noticed that the vimeo link offers you a downloadable original-version with a resolution of 2400x1350? ;) Keep in mind this has been filmed on a smaller sensor (BMCC).

There will be degrading in quality, for sure, as always if you put some glass in front of your lenses, but we have to wait and see how much the image looses. It could still end up being a nice effect-lens for some shoots at such a price-point.
