  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Scarlet Complete Shoulder Rig

Curious... why another shoulder rig when you say you like the WC?

Good friends of mine own a rental shop in NYC. They also own a Scarlet and do rerentals through me. We're always looking for the best solutions for both of our cameras. Variety is always good :)

Makes sense. I have some JAG35 stuff and it's pretty well built for the price. This rig, however, is on a whole other budget level from what they typically offer so it will be interesting to see if the quality matches the price. Good luck. Let us know!

I own some Jag rigs for my other cameras and I've owned products from RR before as well. The guys at Jag are really helpful and stand behind their products. If anything happens to their gear, they'll make it right.

For me the Jag build has been good for most uses, but not perfect for every situation. As I understand it, they've completely remodeled their whole line of products to be much more up to par with the competition and this is why we're seeing price increases.

Zack - have you had any experience with their wireless FF? Looks interesting. I saw them demonstrating it at NAB and it looked pretty good.

I was very close to purchasing this with my new order because it's a very great price for a wff system. However, I realized that it would probably be an impulse buy that I wouldn't use as much as I was convincing myself that I would.

Instead, I'm checking out their Electronic follow focus kit which comes with a small nob you can place near your hand grips to control focus without moving from your grips http://jag35.com/store.php/products/followfocus/effkit.html

I've got the Gini Rigs K-2, it's a great rig for the price. Super comfortable, love the handles, especially the fact that they're Rossette. Check it out if you haven't.

I own a Gini cage and am very impressed with the build quality, I'm also kind of glad I got the first iteration because I like the front mounting points on the side arms. I'm sure he did a good job with the new shoulder rig too, glad to hear it's working well for you. I'd check it out if I didn't already own the very similar WC rig.

My only bother with Gini is the language barrier that causes even more distance in customer service. It's nice to buy from companies with instant customer service access, that you can get on the phone with if you need to, and that can communicate on a more professional level.

It's also nice to support growing American businesses when we can.

ET Mantis rig is the industry standard. Its more cash but works...perfectly. Solid, light, bulletproof, adjustable. No fiddley parts or disassembly/reassembly.
Like anything you rely on: "Buy the best and cry just once."

Seems pretty solid. Jag35 in the past has been pretty dirt cheap. Like other said, it'd be good to see what kind of product they put up at the next price level. Could definitely be a good in between to gini and wc as far as off brand stuff goes. Off the bat though, I don't like that the hand grips are right on the main rod (personal preference). I like the extra extensions of the arri/mantis style wc rig.

With the K-2 rig, are the rosettes that attach to the cage's "rib" flat with two holes in them, or are they elbows with two holes perpendicular to the rosette? The images on the site show both, and I think having them flat would offer more mounting configurations.

Anyone know if you can attach Wooden Cameras A Mount to the back of the K2 shoulder rig to be used with Quickback and battery for counterbalance?

Received the rig the other day. Will definitely do a full review as soon as my camera is back from a rental, but I have to say that this thing is really solid. At first glance I'm guessing it may need a little more back weight, but I can't tell for sure without my camera.

They also sent me this unreleased top-handle that looks pretty kickass. Not sure if it's the final design, but it looks pretty good. I'm not sure about the open clamp design, I'd rather have it wrap-around for more security. I'll make that suggestion.

Will keep you all posted once I've had more time with it.

Hey Zack, super keen for your review! I was looking at WC but I'm self funded so I'm on a tight budget and the advantage of rails is an added bonus to this rig.

Quick question, what are your options for mounting the LCD at eye level over the left hand? I have a WC Easy Plate XL and was wondering if it could be mounted underneath the camera plate at all? That's a long shot, it looks like there are only 3/8-16 holes on the plate. Mounting on top and mounting the LCD upside down will probably be a good option when that's in firmware.

does anyone have a picture of their camera using the Ginirig?

here's a couple crappy cell pics from when we first got ours. It's kind of mix of the GINI rig and a lot of RR parts I already had. (24" rails, handles, etc.) There's probably a couple berkey clamps and rails in there too. The monitor mount sticking out to the left of the camera is a berkey 90 degree clamp and 9" rod with a couple chinese 1/4" rod clamps.

That would be helpful. I also just had a thought, you can still have a side handle on with that cage, right? Seems like it should be a given but it would be pretty annoying if that wasn't possible!

Yes it works with the side handle, but only with three of the arms, of course. Biggest issue I had was mounting rods on the front (bottom), as the battery compartment prevents the butterfly-nut from turning to clamp down the rod on that side... I use a shorter bolt without the nut instead, and have to tighten it with an Allen wrench. I'll try and post a pic of our rig...

Ah, ok. Thanks, that's very useful information!

Wait, don't the handles attach to the front arms on this rig? Does that mean that you would have to find an alternative mounting method for the handles if you were using the Side Handle?

Maybe their K-7 rig would be more appropriate for Side Handle users? The rails are lower on that one as well so you wouldn't have the battery compartment problem. But does this mean that they wouldn't be standard height? I don't know much about rails yet.
