  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Ronford-Baker EVF Mount

That's quite a Red rig ... and a £300 tripod?

I've done run n' gun with rigs looking just like that and much bigger lenses, like my Cooke 18-100. Up and down stairs, rough terrain, whatever. People who think you can't run n' gun with a RED One need to hit the gym and pump some iron. ;)

Jeff,

you are right.

Fitness and gym are very important part of working with RED1 :) .

But it's make you fit and healthy.

Heavy "Frankie" was on Panther X15 that is also not considered as high-end fluid-head by many "pros".

Anyway Panther X-15 is my next buy.

I don't want to get involved in the discussion too much since I have my own agenda, but I am a bit surprised so many people think the ET mount is the only possible solution for a problem. Of course you can think of other ways to mount a viewfinder to a camera. I'll be presenting my viewfinder mount when it is ready but here is a preview.

Sander - the EVF is way too far away from the camera body for on-the-shoulder work.

My thought exactly. You need to work on a solution that makes it possible to slide it into the cam body. Maybe a tube solution HAHAHAHA.

PS Looks really good though

Mark,

probably you are right because i do have it a bit closer.

Also the headphones (right headphone) should be behind camera body

like it is on the picture below.

Then is easy to run & gun with R1 that also depends on your physical conditions.

oh, don't even start

Wholly crap... I hope Ronford has some good lawyers... This is pretty much a perfect lift off the ET design.

How such a simple and obvious concept shoult implement a major difference in design is also beyond my ablity to comprehend.
It's sounds like suiting somebody for making a watch with a round form.
Guys, it's a couple of metal bars and a screw in the middle.
Are patents made to prohibite simplest solutions in life?
Because if that's the case so that I am not free to buy the most solid and/or better priced product between only two, I'll make one made for me for a reasonable amount, so goodbie ET, Ronford, Red, Indians, Chinese, and the next one in line with his own offer with possibly more stupid and complicated design made to avoid execution platoon from patents owners' private soldiers.
It's silly enough to have a piece as complicated as an adjustable wrench sent from another continent... now have I also to worry that this archetype has a design too similar to the first one?

What about the screws that ET uses? aren't they a bit too similar to other screws?
ET doesn't make its own screws, some may say. But hay, ET does make a couple of rectangular metal bars that constitute it's product, and I bet ET hasn't got patent for rectangular metal bars.

Wait! oh, they "invented the concept". Wha concets? they invented the concept of holding something with two bars thight with wheel?
Thank God today I am in a good mood.

I think Ronford's product similarity to ET's is limited to the ultra obvious, ultra simple na unavoidable, anyhting else that could ever be different, namely wheel design and color, ARE polately different. (not enough: of course we all want it black and not cherry-red, all about cinema and photography is black for obvious reasons of colour independence and neutrality). So it's not identical.
About the other few simple elements, I think there is not any other way of doing it without them.
And I bet if It were possible to make this product more different, Ronford would have preferred it. I see usually companies always want to differentiate as much as they can, finding original solutions in order to cut any risk of patent infringing, or at least trying to look as different as they can, often to the point of looking ridiculous.
But when matter and concept are stripped to its most basic atoms, there is no choice.
No choice leads (or should lead) to no patent to defend.

If some one has invented the wheel and is now on the forum with spilling saliva, well now he must be dead for at least three good reasons: because too much time has passed, because the more quickly one dies, the more quickly the humans are allowed to freely use wheels - still 70 years waiting can kill any good man - and finally for being the one who started this trend.

Isn't a scene ridiculous, of a legion of lawyers on a catwalk blabbling about two bars thight with a wheel as an original idea had by their client?
How is it possible then to design and realize starships and satellites, with regions of lawyers disco dancing?

What I'd really like to see is a mount that has an adjustable friction that allows for adjustments in tilt while shooting.

The ET friction head can be set so that it will tilt with your head and stay put when you pull away.

As far as the other thing you want.... just wait and ET will answer.

Oh and Jay, you can mount the ET bracket from the top for more clearance now.

Lastly,

BLATANT specific design infringement. Patent or not, I will not ever purchase one of these.

For the final "lastly."

Doesn't it look like Ted just saw a car wreck or some such sort in the photo above.

First of all.. thats a $8000 tripod/head... second, Frankie isnt as heavy as it visually appears....

I promise, I was talking about Sanjin's Vinten head... I would never dare to question the integrity of your equipment, Jarred :) That Panther looks badass.

Okay, so the RED guys are wearing blue MEDIA vests and ear protection, so I'm going to guess some kind of rocket launch? Nasa?

It all comes down to business ethics....
I can see one of two improvements on the ET design (those stupid levers) but other things like the locking studs don't 'seem' as good
Perhaps Ronford can comment?

Is it a shameless rip off or is ET & Ronford both fairly drawing from a 3rd party.
But we don't know all the facts on this one.
Commonly with design, its the end user (us) that is the last to see anything, when all alomg these kinds of designs have been milling around in one industry or anther for centuries.
I'd hold off casting judgement until you know all the facts.

Eric, please fill me in on how to mount the ET on top. I would like to know this.

And some people still think you can't run and gun with RED! :weight_lift:

Fine. But why would you want to run and gun? It's a digital cinema camera. Use an ENG rig for run and gun folks!:ninja:

:)

Obin,

you are in still living in a sort of funny and outdated "Cloverfield" :clown2: way of doing things.

Me not.

I can run & gun in 4K with my RED as much as I like :) .

You can do it quite easily if you can get by with a stripped down rig.

Shoot 2K
Still lenses
LCD
No follow focus
no mattebox
CF cards (at 2K, just like shooting with a betasp)
Battery belt pack
Red shoulder mount and handles (or better yet, a third party solution)

Not too tough. Weight is very manageable, and as is focus.

Now, for those who are a bit stronger and seasoned.

Shoot 4K
Still primes or zooms or short PL zoom.c
clamp-on matte box
lightweight follow focus
Red Drive with ET shockmounts
Battery belt pack
ET handheld rig
On-camera light
Shotgun microphone with wind protection
LCD
EVF (if you're really fit)

Is it easy? That second configuration is tough at times, yes. But doable. Good looking footage cures all backaches. Well, maybe not but anyway.

David,
on this one I totally agree, take a look at the AccuScene mount for the Genesis.
Tom.
