Sensational news on the 18mm matching the T1.9 of the 5 lens set!

Thanks Jim!

There are other options for a 14mm T1.9. Come by the Abel booth at NAB. ;-)

I understand selling sets at first. But how about a deal for people that already own the 18-50 zoom to be able to buy the 85 prime individually right away? please.

Hi Jim

Are you able to swop out the 18mm for a 16mm?

Having the 25mm already the 16mm would be more effective for wider shots than the 18mm.

Just a thought

Great news that you guys are developing more focal lengths in the same T stop

I don't get this discussion.
So many here have individual requests...
ultrawides for underwater, etc...
If Red is offering a package deal for 5, why make it a 25, 32,50,85,100?
85 and 100 are so close.

Why not just make it a NORMAL, PROVEN set that is required on most shoots:
for a set of 5:
18, 25, 35,50,85 (OR 100)...
for a set of 6:
add the 120 or 140 or whatever Red makes around there ( in place of the regular 135).

Unless there's some technical issue (which there doesn't seem to be, as Jim's opening up for any suggestions), why not make it a regular set for starters???

The other lenses flow on from these..
a 14, a 180...

A regular set doesn't start at 25. It starts at 16 or 18mm.
... and how often do you need both a 85 and a 100?

The other lenses flow on from these..
a 14, a 180...

Why re-invent the wheel here?

Try designing and developing a lens set from scratch and then ask me the same question. It isn't always a matter of what is needed 1st, it is what can be done 1st.

That is true. Particularly with wides. It's not easy or cheap to make a wide angle lens with good rectilinear correction, low lateral chromatic error, (fringing) low curveture of field error, minimal focus shift with change of aperture, etc. etc.

I think this post lead some to believe that these focal lengths (especially an 18mm) at these speeds were reasonably doable, and not in the same category as trying to build a 10mm at 1.9

I'm speaking as someone who'd be keen to buy a regular, useful set of 5 lenses with an 18, but I'd see having both an 85 and 100 in that set of 5 as being a bit... silly.

In all my years of shooting I've never needed to have both an 85 and 100 as part of the prime kit.
How about selling me 4 (25,35,50,85 OR 100) as a package at the regular price, with a credit for the 18mm when it comes out. I'm serious. I'd bet you'd sell more sets of 5 with that deal.

I realize RED may decide against this ultimately, but for what it's worth, I'm with Mark on this strategy. Personally I'd pick the 85 and then pick up a 140 range lens later on when RED produces it.
Peace,

It would be great if the 18 could be part of the 5 lens @ $4k package, once it is available.

After the 18, my personal preference would be for the 40, 21 and 65 lenses, in that order.
But I'm sure all the wide angle afficionados would prefer the 14.

Really?

How do you feel about having a 21 and a 27 in the same kit?

Lenses have become such a huge discussion these days, love it. But it's like cameras, there's so many to choose from and it comes down to too many factors, like preference.
