  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new RED Pro Program...

What part of my post didn't you understand...? :-)

This is what we are releasing. You are certainly not required to buy the set. Or individuals for that matter. I think we will be OK, but thanks for your concern.

Now that some have responded... next up:

18mm T1.9
21mm T1.9
65mm T1.9
120mm T1.9
140mm T1.9

14mm beginning
Outstanding news Jannard :w00t:! I didn't think RED wants to make so many lenses. Please don't make those lenses too expensive, else the special RED factor gets lost.

+ May I ask who designs and manufactures your lenses? And can you say some about their specs and how they compare to say Zeiss lenses or SLR-Lenses?

+ One more question: How can the new Mysterium-X S35 sensor which is bigger than the standard Super35 be covered by those S35 lenses?

Really?

How do you feel about having a 21 and a 27 in the same kit?

Lenses have become such a huge discussion these days, love it. But it's like cameras, there's so many to choose from and it comes down to too many factors, like preference.

But I think Mark's point was that a standard set of 5 lenses starting with an 18mm has covered most people's needs for a very long time. Preference is great when we have the luxury. :)

14, 27, 35, 50, 75, 100 as my prime set. Why stick to 5?

Optimo 12-1 as well.

I know some guys who would argue that missing from my listed set is also the 21, 32, 40.

It comes down to preference and funding. If I could, I'd own a whole complete set of ......

That may very well be the case... but our 1st five is as posted. Pretty easy stuff to understand.

It won't be too long when you have 12 RED primes to choose from... and there will still be people that complain. :-)

Wow. I thought we were all just having a conversation and discussing options. I don't think anyone was being miserable about the set.. unless I missed a post or two.

21mm T1.9
65mm T1.9
120mm T1.9
140mm T1.9

40mm? I think it's a much more popular and useful focal length than 21mm or 120mm.

I think you should go in this order...

18mm T1.9
40mm T1.9
140mm T1.9
65mm T1.9
21mm T1.9
120mm T1.9

I've often felt a great set for the Red would be 18mm, 27mm, 40mm, 65mm and 100mm. 25,50 and 85mm can just be boring sometimes.

Don't normally need them. I don't get really get your point, Shawn.
I'd feel pretty silly if there was a 25 in there as well, though, and I was limited to 5 lenses.

Doesn't a rental set of 5 or 6 normally come with a lens wider than 20mm?

It's there because it's often needed, and directors ask for them. Regularly. It may have proven easy to make an 85 and 100, but it doesn't make for a useful set to have them both in there.
I'm not saying I wouldn't take the free lens if I bought 4!
But I won't have a full rentable set for a lot of shoots till I have the 18mm.

I get that the 18mm 1.9's not easy.
But I'll be having to buy, or trying to rent single 18mm Ultraprimes if Red can't make one in time, which is a shame.

I am very capable of understanding, but no offense, I got the impression there was some discussion about what focal lengths most interested folks. And from your one post, I also got the impression that the other focal lengths were close behind, and maybe the first release could be adjusted.

Cheers,
Chris

BTW - I wasn't complaining and I praised the release in another thread!

I've been looking, and I know it's around somewhere - what's the status of using Panavision lenses on the R1?

Is it possible? Warranty issue?

Somehow my smily faces didn't seem to carry enough weight.

Here is the release order:

25mm
35mm
50mm
85mm
100mm

4-6 months later

18mm
21mm
65mm
120mm
140mm

couple of months after that...

14mm

I was going off you saying the 85 was to close to the 100. Do you feel the same way in regards to having the 21 and 27 together?

(I'm not finding fault, just participating in this conversation and learning a bit here.)

I think if possible, everyone would carry a wide prime set and a long prime set. Along with 2 zooms....

Jim

I'm not trying to complain, Jim.
I'm just wanting a regular set.
An brief explanation from of the difficulties of offering the 18mm, and a rough timeframe for availability, would answer a potential lens customer's comments and queries. Jeez!

That is a bad ass lineup, you could call it a day after this, but something tells me Jim knows no boundaries.

18mm T1.9 (next)
21mm T1.9 (next)
25mm T1.9 (soon)
35mm T1.9 (soon)
50mm T1.9 (soon)
65mm T1.9 (next)
85mm T1.9 (soon)
100mm T1.9 (soon)
120mm T1.9 (next)
140mm T1.9 (next)

300mm T2.9 (NOW)
18-85mm zoom T2.9 (NOW)

and

14mm (beginning)

Do you know Jim if the 14mm is looking like it will end up with the T2.9s? Or is there still a chance for it being in the T1.9 lineup? I am sure if you could manage to make such a lens and keep it somewhat within the pricing of the others, that Red Primes would obliterate everything else out there without a doubt... of course given that they perform as spectacularly as they sound like they will, and we believe they will.

I'd love to see a 10mm T2.9, and while I should be banned just from trying to make requests for something I know so little about and I already get the feeling that this may be sort of a funny request :) how about making the 28mm, and making it a focus pane shift lens? And somehow making it only a $1000 more than the rest? Perhaps a bit wider of a focal lenght would be better, but I would guess it would become even harder to keep the price down and there will already be a 21mm and a 25mm... tough 28mm is also really close to the 25mm...

maybe make it the 10mm  hehehe... just kidding, that would have to be ridiculously expensive to make

It sounds like a cool idea though, doesn't it?

Me too. :)

The lenses I listed are the only prime lenses that I myself would be interested in purchasing. I would buy them as a set or not part of a set either way does not matter.

Apologies. I was just expressing feelings about having a set of 5 without a sub-20mm wide being offered in there, and it's practical implications.
