  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new RED Pro Program...

What other focal lengths would you like to see? We are considering a 14mm and a 21mm. Thoughts?

Jim

Definitely 14mm, or even 10mm if it make business sense to you. IMO, 21mm can be made later. My personal experience is that I have shot over 20 feature films with a set of Zeiss Super Speeds (18, 25, 35, 50 and 85mm) plus a wider lens, like a 14mm or 12mm, never needed a 21mm lens.

Derek

Now that some have responded... next up:

18mm T1.9
21mm T1.9
65mm T1.9
120mm T1.9
140mm T1.9

14mm beginning

I think the 85mm, 100mm, 120mm and 140mm are too close to each other. In practical use, we should be able to jump from 85mm to 135mm (or 120mm) and won't need so many close focal lengths if you want to save on development costs.

Besides, producers won't pay for a "complete" set of many close focal lengths anyway. Also, it would be easier on the rental facilities as they don't have to satisfy all the requests from some theory-rich DPs.

Just my personal experience.

Derek

Jim,

It would be great if you can include the 18mm in the "package deal" (i.e. 18, 25, 35, choice of 50 or 65, and the 85, more or less like a set of Zeiss Super Speeds) and sell them at the same "set discount" when it comes out.

Derek

They will be sold as a set at 1st. All 5 lenses for just under $20K ($4K each). All 6 lenses (add the Pro 300mm) for just under $25K.

Going back to this.... Any chance of a credit for those of us who already bought the 300mm Pro to bring our complete package in line with that price? I would've glady bought the rest of the set at that time, too.

Just wonderin' :red_bandana:

Good suggestion... I'll sleep on it.

Jim

OK, I slept on it... we'll do that. Only seems fair to me.

Jim

First gotta get the money then I can afford to drool...will not sit in a day dream wishing...gotta get out there to make it happen. I'm still sat here...

...Now I not...

From all the 100's series sugested, maybe a 135 or 140 prime would be the best to bridge the gap from the announced set. Seems like the 14 is the most requested by everyone, and it makes sense, since wide angle and Ultra wide angle shots are the ones that trully make the resolution of the Red sensor's shine. The real challenge is to make the 14 to avoid that "fisheye" look or distort too much . How's the 18 mm handling distortion?

So just a quick question... It doesn't look like I'll be able to afford the $20K prime set any time soon (unfortunately), so my only current option is to get them one at a time. So my question is: When would I realistically be able to order a prime and hold it in my hands? A year from now?

Does nobody else here think a 40mm is important?
As a second series lens of course.

As to what a standard set is, if it's supers it's generally 18, 25, 35, 50 & 85.
If it's standards or Ultras it's 16, 24, 32, 50 and 85.
For S4s it usually 18, 25, 32, 50, 75.

I'm pretty fond of my Zeiss T2.1 spread which is 12, 16, 24, 32, 40, 50, 85, and 100. I disagree that you don't need an 85 and 100, I have both and use the 100 much more, but the 85 can save your ass when the 100 is just a hair too long, although I'd prefer a 65 or 75 to 85mm.

My ideal Red prime set would be.. 14, 18, 27, 40, 65 & 100. What can I say, I'm a strange dude:shiftyph34r:
