  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

new RED Pro Program...

Jim...

WOW on the lenses! I hope you're planning on enough quantity in the long run to justify revolutionary prices. :-)
I'm hoping there's enough to go around as well. I think they're going to be pretty popular.

On the accessories, you're branding and statement makes me feel like you've just downgraded the existing accessories to 'non pro' ... one of the things I was looking forward to in the Epic/Scarlet lineup was accessories that were more progressive in price than your existing one. This announcement feels more contrary to that, like you're going more the Element Technica route. Speaking of them, I'm surprised you havent just absorbed them :-)
I don't know that the original accessories were non-pro. I think they tried to find a happy medium between designing good products and keeping them affordable. The community has spoken loudly. Make it professional (works as expected and is durable) and people will pay. I'd rather think of these new products as second generation. The first generation was getting off the ground, offering products that mostly got the job done. Now it's about refining the product line and carving a solid reputation in the industry.

Red is really good at listening to its users, and incorporating that feedback into their new products. You see it in the new camera designs, you see it in the accessories. I'm excited about what they have in the works. It's going to be a fun year.

If EPIC looked half as good as these lenses...

SEXY vs. utilitarian.

No offense intended! But really.. could you guys push the EPIC in this direction?

I hate to admit it.. but looks matter... wow, these are hot.

I guess I really am shallow after all!

What's the Outer Diameter of those lenses? I'd guess around 95mm-110mm based on seeing them beside the 18-85. It'd be nice if they were 95mm, that puts them on the scale of Ultra-Primes, which would be sweet.

If only Red was publicly traded...

This could turn around the stock market!

And I thought companies were fleeing Southern Cal...

Thanks for keeping the California Dream alive,

Rosco

I think Jim deserves to get all the benefit since he is throwing millions at it like their are quarters. :matrix:

And I doubt that these will be sold only to people who live in California.

But do they cover FF35?

Stephen

EXACTLY... that and prices... and the ETA of something wider... and footage... and a Ferrari with a supermodel in the passenger seat for everyone that buys one (except me, I got a girl already, I love you sweetie :))... and world peace... and an infinite source of energy... and...

Natural progression and 'second gen' is a GREAT thing, but they shouldnt have to hike prices to do so.

I felt I paid pro prices the first time. $450 for a battery, $20 for a single screw, $200 for an 18inch cable, $250 for a handle... I dont care what Arri's been charging ... Red acc. prices have never been on par with the Red One price. AT LEAST keep the accessories at around existing prices without hiking it further ... please? :-)

im going to guess $37,470 for the prime set

Wasnt price already announced some time ago at $20k? Even if they raised it, I cant see it going over $25k. Besides, gas prices are way down, the dollar is stronger, many things in this economy are becoming cheaper...

I think those prices were quickly taken out of the equation when they decided to make lenses that were actually professional quality..

I just look at the slower 300mm prime being $5,950
and would guess the faster primes to be at least 6200-7000 a piece (on the low end)

I think if you looked into having these milled, molded, and/or cut on a custom basis or limited run; to similar quality and tolerance, you would find that the prices are actually pretty reasonable.

Yes, maybe they look like a widget you could get at a hardware store. But, the quality and precision are a whole different league; and the production volumes are much smaller. The same goes for cables. These cables are made to carry a signal with little or no information loss; and they do it for a very special (and not widely used) signal protocol.

I agree, I would like to see prices stay where they are or drop if they can do that without cutting into their bottom line. I will never argue with lower prices. Especially when I go into the grocery store these days and pick up a couple of things and the bill is always over $100. We live in expensive times, but maybe that is about to change. Although i don't like paying $200 for a cable I have no idea what it costs Red on their books. I'm sure some of these accessories are making up for the R&D of Red One. Or maybe they are making a 500% profit. I have no idea.

Yes, $20K was tossed around at some point. That was for four lenses I believe.

Almost all the best (or PRO) still and cine lenses are hand made with

a rigorous control and measuring system involved in the production.

And also they are never cheap.

Look at Leica (Germany), Cooke (UK), Angenieux (France), Zeiss (Germany) cine lenses, Canon or Fuji ENG lenses (Japan).

Also Panavision (USA-California) lenses are all hand made and even you cannot buy them.

Production and labour costs are pretty much high in those countries.

So I don't see that RED lenses should be cheaper.

It's a bit like meet the VADERS....

heh heh heh.. i told you it would be a good week :)

I call dibs! You guys have my billing and shipping info, wrap 'em up and send 'em over. Except for the 300mm, I already have that one.

I do have one favor to ask. IIRC, there's both a 15mm and 18mm prime planned in the "second wave". Please make sure the 18mm is just as fast as the rest of the set, hope that's not too much to ask. As for a wider lens, like 14-15mm, that would be great. I understand if that one starts to become too difficult to maintain the same T-stop as the rest of the set.
