  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New RED Color Science - Test Pilot Feedback Thread

I'm not sure everyone quite gets the significance of this new color science yet. I think it is likely to be at least as important as Build 16 was for overall image quality improvement.

Now prove me wrong.

Jim

Thats a tall order, Build 16 made me feel like I had a new cam

test description 1/9

test description 1/9

-Light source: 12 dwe lamps bounce in white wall and 3x3 light grid in front

-lightmeter read f.4.7, 1/48 iso 320

-color meter read Kº2730 , LB-72, CC 2 M

-1 first shoot without the auto white balance:

-shooting the same fstop in light meter the image seems to be under expose about one stop.

Auto white bance

Auto white bance

performing the auto with balance the ajust seems good, but another stop gone. 5600 to (2700Kº / Tint-6 auto white balance) +-1 stop diferent

the exposure

the exposure

the good exposure seems to be 2.8and2/3 (- 1 stop from the lightmeter)

Auto white balance exposure

Auto white balance exposure

With the color chart the exposure compare to the lightmeter reading its almost there...

the difference quiet literally, is night vs. day :)

Did you get your camera back yet Shawn?

No, still rented out, I can't be sad though, its being put it to great use and I'll be able to not sell my sons into slavery to afford the Red Primes :-)

the skin

the skin

The skin seems to be 2 stop underexp compare to the lightmeter reading

i will send R3d files by email....

great improvent in color.

the skin tone in the HD monitor and red 7' Lcd monitor seems to be more red/magenta than EVF and the Apple display(calibrate with eye-one match) seems to be more yellow in the skin tone

all my best

I gave the magic pixies blue cupcakes made with blue food coloring, and hence they can do blue better. And if you believe that....

Ah, I understand now. ;)

Actually, that's wrong, because it's all colors that are better, not just blues. It's just there you can see the benefit more clearly.

Graeme

Indeed. I'm impressed by what I see.

Very interesting stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing more test results. From what has been posted so far, it seems that the noise issue has been addressed very well- but there still is some issue with the need of extra exposure.

I wish I could have been a part of this test- but I've got some gigs that I need to be sure everything works for- so no beta test for me. Maybe next time ...

Keep up the great work guys- I can't wait to see more!

We'd like to ask for three kinds of data.

a) your comments on the following "hard" data i.e data where there is no subjective element. the real Fstop is about 1 some times two stops underexp from the light meter reading

For a given target - ideally a grey card filling center 25" of the field of view - what is the numerical value read back by

- camera's AUTO white balance Kº 2700 Tint-6

- white balance tool in RED Alert Kº 2763 Tint-8.88

- light meter iso 320 1/48 f4.07

b) your comments on the following "soft" data i.e. data where there is a subjective element.

- Visual appearance of image in RED-EVF and RED-LCD, including comments on noise under tungsten light. the red lcd apear more red and magente compare to the evf. the evf is more yellow less noise

- Visual appearance on external monitor - such as HD-SDI broadcast or cinema monitor the lcd and Hd monitor(panasonic 1760) are close more red and magenta and the apple display is more yellow

- Visual appearance in RED Alert! ( skin tones and colorimetry in general, and noise under tungsten light ) much better skin tone not so desaturate.
a very nice baby pink skin tone

so...you think this build still needs an 80x? I'm hoping the change is so much you don't really need an 80x anymore
