  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New: public beta of Clipfinder 2.1 - the render features you requested

shashbugu,

On second thought, there should not be that much of a difference in render times between full res. and half res.

You should probably investigate a little more so it doesn't bite you next time.
If you let me know what hardware you are you using (Mac model, RAM, disks)
and how many frames you were rendering I can give some comparison figures for render speed.

Cheers,
Hans

Great program. Few questions.

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get 3k and 4k to render out to the same size. My 4k came out correct but the 3k was correct in width but not height. It was a super wide aspect ratio that it seemed to make up itself.

Also how would you recommend working with the clips that have dropped frames?

i dont know what i did wrong but i used 1k res to output to dvcprohd, there was too much aliasing introduced, i will re-render at at full res but one process at a time, i think it was because i set it at 7 processes at a time.

my computer is an intelmac tower 8core 2.8 ghz 16gb ram, 2 terrabytes soft raided,

i noticed that its better to out put to 1k prores HQ and not dvcprohd.

quick question, if after editing (red proxies and dvcprohd.mov files) cuts only, will i still be able to use the clipfinder for the final conform?

i read the internal functions of clipfinders xml as explained in the help manual and it seemed this should not be a problem since only the proxies are replaced. I imagine this would mean i would copy the dvcprohd files into the clipfinder output folder. yes or no. the reason why this is important is beacause after drading in color the next step is sending the files to after effects using this xml script/plugin
http://www.creative-workflow-hacks....o-after-effects-scripting-without-the-hassle/
it will be helpful is you could integrate or have the ability to import all the .mov files into clipfinder and only process the files red generated files. is this possible?

shashbugu,

In order to render in final quality, import the clips from the FCP XML.
Clipfinder will list the dvcprohd files along with the R3D files.
However, when you render, Clipfinder will only render from the R3D files and ignore the dvcprohd files.

If you copy the dvcprohd files into the same folder as the final R3D render files, Clipfinder will replace the paths for both the R3D and dvcprohd files, if you leave the dvcprohd files where they are, Clipfinder will not change the paths for these.

As I understand from the description of FCPtoAE, both approaches should work. The difference is just that in the first scenario you have all clips in one directory, in the second, you have two separate directories (one for dvcprohd files, one for .mov files generated from R3D).

Hope this helps,
Hans

Scott,
You can set it to use anything between 1 and 16 REDline tasks. You'll need to play with this setting to find the sweet spot for your configuration (the bottleneck is usually disk I/O). There's an fps indicator to help you with gauging effective throughput.

Cheers,
Hans

Hans, could you explain this one a little bit more. If I'm understanding it correctly, with my 8 core machine with 16GB RAM, I can run multiple Redline tasks which theoretically speeds up the rendering process, but could be limited by slow I/O of disks. So, if I'm using FW800 drives, I should expect a bottleneck perhaps, and those render tasks might not be optimized. Do you have any rule of thumbs yet for what works best with this kind of setup?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

I'm afraid there are no simple rules.

Render performance depends on a number of factors including
- RAW format (2K, 3K, 4K)
- debayer resolution
- target format (QuickTime, DPX, TIFF) and codec
- number and speed of processors
- disk I/O
...

If you have multiple disks it should help to have the source material and the rendered files on different disks.

You can roughly gauge if disk I/O is the limiting factor by selecting a high number of tasks (in your case, 8 would probably be enough) and use Activity Monitor to see whether all CPUs are at or around 100% load. If you cannot saturate all of your CPUs, your disk subsystem is probably too slow.

If you can saturate your CPUs, then you can play with the number of tasks and render the same set of clips multiple times, each with a different number of tasks (try 4 and 1 first). At the end of each render session, check the fps indicator to see which settings gives the best average performance.

Cheers,
Hans

Okay, cool. I'm getting about 3fps doing 4K 16:9 23.98 to 720P DVCProHD and about 2.5fps with same source going to 1080P ProRes. This is with 1 selected and similar results with 4. It's also with 1/2 res high debayer and catmult algorithm. I'll do more tests to see where my sweet spot is.

Steve,

If you are targetting 720p or 1080p you might want to try a debayer size of 1/2(high) or even 1/2(normal). In most cases the difference in quality compared to a full debayer is minimal but render performance is way better. The only exception to this would be material recorded with very slow shutter speeds.

Cheers,
Hans

Hi Hans,

What am i supposed to do when ClipFinder refuses to start render, or pretends to render but ther is nothing in the output folder.
Clips get marked as rendered though, wich is strange.

This a great piece of software, if I could find away to get around those little problems, it would be cool.

Thanks for your efforts.

I couldn't find your email adress so I send you a private message.

Thanks for you amazing responsivness.

Hello Hans,

Is there a way with Clipfinder to reconnect the proxies to clips with no suffixes, like files converted with CineForm?

Hello Hans,

I assume you want to conform to proxies.
You can do this with Clipfinder if the first 16 characters of the file name (of the Cineform files) are the same as the first 16 characters of the matching proxy file.
Download the latest version of Clipfinder , select "Run Conform on FCP XML file" from the Edit menu, check "replace clips with ...proxies" and check "match only first 16 characters".
You will need to set "Clip Directory" to the directory that holds your original R3D material.

If this does not help you, please E-mail more information (my mail address can be found in the Help Pages [CMD-?]) and I will try my best to help you.

Cheers,
Hans

Hello Hans,

I did try before on the 16 character thing, but couldn't quite do what I wanted to do, but most likely I'm missing something.

What I want to do is to edit in m or h proxies in FCP and replace with CineForm clips with exact same clip name with R3D, but the suffix is mov instead or R3D.

I don't see a setting to match with the Cineform clip names (which is straight forward).

Is that possible?

Best,

Kaku Ito/Musetex

If you want to replace proxies with transcoded files (.mov), the transcoded files need to be in a single folder with no subfolder.
Can you have a look at this

http://www.daun.ch/software/ClipfinderHelp/conformingafinal.html

and tell me if this works for you or where your requirements are different from what I have described ?

Cheers,
Hans

Hans, I never though that the clip directory works other than R3D, so that would work.
Since CineForm rename the mov files with suffix like "001", I was wondering if you can add a parameter to be able to match such clip names, kind of like how Ian did in the Crimson to match the names by using typing in additional text in the names. Or read only 16 characters for the rendered clips.

I used the automator to remove the "001" portion in batch for now.
Replace text "001." as ".", this way, it won't mistakenly erase any of the clip name with 001.
