  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New project...

Had not seen or if I had, didn't remember those quotes of Jim's. I think you have just made the big reveal... and it sounds exciting.

So, I called it, like 4 years ago.

They had said single lens 3D firmware (though I think this is a lot more than that) and I had done substantial figuring out different ways over the decades. So I simply listed all the ways I figured out or knew of that I wasn't going to either use, or apply a patent on, and asked somebody from Red on the forums, if it was any of these (including multiple focus) and they said no. Unless they are talking about archivieving refocus, but the language is not clear.

Back at the announcement of lytro I posted an outline of a simple software method to archive 3D from existing single lens single sensor cameras. At some time in the ancient past I figured out a better way than that, a perfect way. However, what I'm working on now will blow your Tiny Brains away, anybody got a $100 million?

Re-edit.

Somebody might have figured out that multiple focus might actually refer to the method by which the 3D single lens camera works.

I forgot to mention. Samsung was selling off their sensor stuff to some degree. I believe Sony was talked about as a buyer, but I hope Red bought it, because they had a 3D multiple directional pixel which could help. You will notice the Red cameraphone is supposed to have 3D I think, but only one lens on the diagrams.

This is what I was thinking, especially since Ted Shilowitz is in charge of VR at 20th century. There was a post a few years ago where Jim said they were working on lightfields, and that is a big component of magic leap. It's a perfect fit -- the optics, the wearable glasses, the extreme image processing -- all things that Jim has experience with. Maybe he thinks Magic Leap is something different than standard AR/VR, or like you said, this has nothing to do with it.

As to the Jim quote "One thing I will say is that we are working on multiple focus and depth map (think Lytros) but with wicked high resolution... The prototype is incredible. Don't tell Gizmodo or Engadget. :-)"

I remember Jim Jannard saying that at the time... However I remember the context of the discussion and he was totally taking the piss/saying that in jest/ tongue in cheek.

From everything that Jannard has said its pretty clear he's not into AR/VR or anything of the sort. Doesn't mean that an entire technology should be consigned to the dustbin forever just because JJ says so, nor does it mean that he has come up with something that is far superior to current VR or AR... Or something that makes real world applications of VR tech obsolete either.

The "key" I'm pretty sure is to be found in "Rent" "Racing Extinction"... Not 100% sure why knowing what JJ may be getting up to slightly in advance is of any advantage really ? Either you are ready or you are not... There's not a lot of middle ground there IMO... LOL

There is a way that it matters and that is buying decisions. The fact Jim said he would be guaranteeing anyone's deposit (or somesuch)... that suggests there is tech to be bought.

And if he follows the RED practice of "sooner deposit, sooner receive" then it could be pertinent to any who may have to choose between purchasing what is known or waiting to purchase something that is much better.

That is my take on it, anyway. YMMV.

I thought the quote in question was here, and nothing to do with VR or AR, but about filming, which suds post processing and special effects and computer animation (as well as future 3D viewing).

Elsie is right too. It is whenever to wait, for what, and how long is the minimum wait, those are the questions. Whoever would say it would be of no advantage anyway? People around here stagger me. Re-edit: Sorry just realised that was not a third party Eric.

Sorry, I'm a bit testy. They just sent out a We are Axiom song and I deleted my subscription in the spot. Its bad enough that everything has been so long and it is big etc, with craft camera promising to do most of it in a cheap camera that looks like the Axiom gamma mockup. I just has been going through a post talking about a 100 camera order going to cost 15k euros each because the electronics are so complex, when the Nividia TX1 Jetson credit card sized embedded drone board can ingress closer to 8kp24 of pixels. As I always advise, unless you have money like Red, use standard parts that are subsidised by volume and wait for the performance curve to be raised on future additions. We now even have cheap 43rds pov raw cameras that you can use your mobile to operate. Why don't people .... listen. Good fortune to.them.

This link from the RED Laser Projector thread has me wondering if there is a tie-in somehow with Jim's big reveal.

@elsie N good find man...

That patent was originally filed (provisional) in 2012. So its not a "New Project" per se; seems like they went a number of rounds with the examiners given the number of continuations. Reading through the (granted) version this Laser projector to a conventional laser projector is what a formula 1 racing car is to a shopping cart. Really shows Jannard's personality in a way to find or devise the means to solve the problem no matter what and also his mind set towards modularity and being able to configure things in a multiplicity of ways for a range of different users/applications. Never the less fundamentally the design of the projector leans more towards cinematic display but is never the less very scalable.

That aside... there seems to be the belief that high bandwidth wireless transmission would be possible. Usually we put those in patents to cover our bases in terms of "carrier signals" and the like. So how close are we to shooting wirelessly to a bombproof archival medium? Straight from the camera?

As I said, we have a wireless standard that can be worked in from silicon image.

Actually the credit goes to Barry Bishop in the RED Projector thread for posting the link. I think the updated patent filing took place in April IIRC, so it flew under the radar for quite some time.

And I think your take on modularity is spot on... the 5 laser slots in the encasement suggests a way to make it affordable as a home projector by using the original three and adding one or two more for more laser light makes it potentially a theater type of projector. This was exactly what Jim offered originally.

Over time I have posted some things suggesting Jim was intentionally abandoning the Laser projector, hoping to have him post something... anything... to the contrary. Billionaires like Jim are Whales, not Sharks so they don't take bait. '-)

Anyway, apologies to Jim for doubting him following through on his project, even though it is still probably a ways out in release ether.

Also, with rapidly improving CRISPR tech, I've decided I've got plenty of time so I can wait. '-)

As I said, we have a wireless standard that can be worked in from silicon image.

So presumably RED would be better positioned (than anyone else) to achieve that capability because of REDCODE... being far more efficient and hence far more efficient to "transmit"?

That too. But that technology far outstrips what WiFi is currently offering.

Yeah I know dude... (that's an understatement, what you say),

So maybe all those "funky" antennae on Ranger 1.0 do a little bit more (than look pretty) LOL.

If that is the case then that would be a game changer and would put RED squarely ahead/greater market share/system of choice for professional workflow.

The 90Ghz (was that the one) is fairly short range and line of sight, which depends on the job as to how useful that is, but you can use an off the shelf part.

I'm looking at starting on some what u call them particle reception, my head, can't remember the name, pass through the whole planet nearly interacting with it. Hope for high performance methodology. electron Neutrinos, that the word. But I've got ideas for radio waves that van communicate long distance nearly instantly, but still obey the law of physics.

It could be a way to read the colour of a photon without a filter? It would benefit RED cameras and other gadgets too??

Invented that. That is how I was going to do my home made medium format sensor. However, you can do it with a layer sensor. In matter of fact you can do a lit with layered sensors, like a very accurate 7 color design, for use in science, industrial and security too. I was looking at doing that.

Something to process and display 10k motion picture images with ease....

Mike Brennan

We're getting our Helium 8K Weapons, now all we'll need is the Red time machine. Imagine being able toCatch such wonders as the Big Bang, Merkle's Boner, and the shotheard 'round the world.

The effects of this would be quite positive. No longer do you need >4K to give a 4K image. So your photosites can be a bit larger.

Invented that.
Tell the people at RED!
