  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New project...

Started going back through the thread and searching for posts from Jim...

"It has to do with space. And travel. And time. And electronics." May '16 - Jim Jannard

Yup - it's volumetric video recording. And I'm willing to bet some money on it.

HypeVR is pretty interesting, although I haven't heard much about them for some time so I don't know what their current status is.
I believe they were cofounded by Tonaci Tran, who I recall used to be active on REDuser back in the day and I think quite close to RED. I'm not sure if he's around any more.

The Potential Solution, What Jim is Planning.

The Potential Solution, What Jim is Planning.

To go on from my comments in another thread I've worked on designs for VR and this filming area for decades, including headsetless designs. My basic VR headset design is much better than what's on offer, and my basic phone version blows all the phone sets away. It is a shame I can't get money to do the basic versions in order to do the more advance one. But with a 3D printer I might be able to start but I'll have to make an incinerator to smoke the prototypes as I test the design. Not good security to have a bunch of prototypes hanging around. But I want to do metal kiln printing anyway. So, we will see. If I make a high percentage micro particles in a binder it should produce good results after the kiln burns the binding agent off to fuse the metal. But preciseness is needed. I should be able to achieve 2-3 micon feature sizes. Anybody know of any systems like this with minimal shrinkage? I know of broader systems. Problem is particle distribution in the medium.

The Solution, what Jim is planning:
----------------------------------------

Now, Jim is giving a hint, with the AR inclusion. A long time before industry started talking about what AR could, how it could work, I was dreaming all that up in my head, so I think I have a solution, and I likely know where Jim is getting the ideas and technology from, I have some on my books, but the technology from these sources would likely be primitive compared to my previous design that came out of my research after around 100 mostly different designs. The pieces of the puzzle maybe about to fall together. You guys with my email, get it out..

It is a AR/VR design proposed years ago for heads up display in the military it projects the image on the back of the retina This was done with a laser source using sonics to scan the image. So, it appears as a big display without the glasses and can be made a very small size, or be made into a theater sized projector (but likely bigger aperture and scanning mechanism). Sound familiar, but you can't best the 25mw laser rule to do that without my alternative. BTW, I'm enjoying my Microvision laser projector. Remarkable how bright purer primary colors are at 17lux (but maybe I shouldn't have glanced into it, and with my glasses on). So, headsets, minimal power and space compared to them. It can't be as small as my design either because of the mechanism, and the processing engine design. However, in this day and age, it should be just right compared to the size many years ago. Now, army telepresence drones etc (note).

Now, what else is he talking about. Well I was talking in the industry years ago about some functionality equivalent to the subsequent Microsoft AR technology. This saves massive 'time, travel and space'. Microsoft is doing what I envisioned, but maybe missing one really big thing, the primary functionality of my design. However, to be more specific to what Jim maybe referring to, augmented reality meetings. With the camera array, and very small laser retina projectors, you can have a meeting with a person in another city in their reality, who can walk around the room in your reality, as if face to face (maybe I've talked about this before, streaming subconscious personal design memory here, as the normal stuff has issues) . Close enough to so called "Holodeck" uses for now. So, it can drastically cut down travel, even more than current tele-presence, as the volumetric surround 3D would feel more natural. I can enhance that further, but I'm not being paid as a consultant. Now, look back at all those fake transparent pseudo 3D stage demonstrations that were popular a few years ago, why. This would now be for real, and be able to walk around the room stage.

The real 3D technology friends of mine have seen, this just emulates it.

Now, with a telepresence unit, such a system could walk a stage, or a factory to inspect things. A few protocols to enhance this are needed. The local and distant party would both see each other, and so forth. A small drone could be used for the telepresence.

Or, it could be just some slim lined glasses like tech that achieves the same thing etc.

Now, there are many more uses, in a way that blows the MS headset away.

Cool enough?

I predict there will be a Red camera named Phantom.

Well, if they do enough of them..

Whatever it is it will be outside of my window of opportunity. Looks like I'm in line as an investor in a stem cell technique that even the primary is unaware of the possibilities.

I'm so pumped about this that I have scrapped a pretty low-budget project and am diverting all that money along with more to invest. As things currently stand, it looks like I'll be able to keep the cameras I've got. But if needed, I'll even sell them to fulfill my part of the investment.

There's no real input other than money so it looks like I'll spend the winter writing.

Good on you. The winter of your contentment Elsie. :)

Jim could create a computer system like apple but with high-end tech and a great operating system??

Volumetric (and high resolution) capture is going to be highly dependent on huge data rates. So guessing it will be large investment and studio rental - I believe Fuji or similar created a volumetric capture studio in Japan. And on a smaller scale there have been hybrid scanning and color imagery systems. If somehow it is full scene capture and video frame rates and also portable that would be quite revolutionary. Then just need HMD or arrangement of auto stereoscopic displays at matching resolution for playback of the volume.

And now I'm convinced that Jim Jannard is working on a volumetric video capture system. This makes his Lytros comment make sense. Convinced. And I wonder if HypeVR is his!!

HypeVR isn't Jim's baby, it's Tonaci's. So it's in the REDUser Family but not Papa RED. And they're effectively using off-the-shelf tech so there isn't really any room for Jim to add anything to that approach. Lightfield makes more sense if you can get the sample/data rate under control. The HypeVR approach won't scale up but it will work as a stop-gap until software and hardware catches up to the lightfield requirements.

RED has developed a way to capture 8K Full-Frame VV images at up to 60 fps. My God do you realize how much processing has to happen just for a single frame? Multiply that by 60X/sec.
The Nvidia Drive PX handles 4.5 Gigapixels a second on 10 watts. I imagine the RED chips are actually on at least a couple generation old fabrication just because unless your name is Intel or Nvidia you're unlikely to have the latest fabs at your disposal. Especially since RED doesn't have several Billion devoted to chip design, nor the business imperative to turn around chip designs as fast as a mass consumer market company like Nvidia or Intel does. Even if they did take advantage of Intel's new custom fab services it still takes time to lay out your chip. I was working for a company that released 45nm chips when 22 were commonly available because that's just how long it took to design the chip. And that was one of the world's top chip designers.

Similarly with storage, I think you're looking at the wrong problems for RED/Jim to solve. There are companies like IBM who have massive multi billion dollar incentives and huge R&D teams doing low level basic research on next generation fast affordable storage. I imagine they are spending far more on R&D than RED's total lifetime revenue so it would be very surprising if RED could make headway on what essentially is really academic material science. What are RED's core competencies? It's cleverly solving problems effectively that others are ignoring or addressing but at too high of a price point because it's viewed as a niche market.

Too right Gavin, even the design in my Nividia Android TV set top box is in the 8k capable range in the credit card sized drone board. They are releasing a new console soon by the looks of it, and I imagine a new chipset.

All Red needs to is team up with somebody, like they did in sensors, that has the R&D and chip plant access and contribute. Red gets access, they get to sell stuff based on Red designs. Redray codec should be a real asset.

Basically, for Red, most what they are doing in camera chip sets is refining their previous designs for better performance.

How do you know you're not already there 200 years ago James?

No 6k camera phone, or VR. I'm bored.
