  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New project...

A new form of renewable energy wherein vague hints trigger endless spinning of wheels. Right under our noses. Could save us all.

Is that how The Matrix works, "its not really real is it" "Let's think about that". Machines, "Ahh, Conspiracy theories really do generate more mental energy for us. Let's throw in the Trump Card and see what happens, to mental energy increases".

A 6K phone? Really guys? The current camera needs a fan and a bigass memory card - not sure technology is there yet for a phone scale RED

The Red cellphone patent was shown here before, but Jim says we were not right, so it's presumably not that.

However, it all depends on what sort if video such a device does. There already are 6k cell phone sensors listed, I have seen them when looking for parts. The way the video is done might only require a fraction of the processing of redcode, depending on codec. Look at present camera phones that do less than half 6k. As technology progresses more capability is possible, so even though we are a generation away from 7nm equilibrium where further shrinkages result in higher energy per clock rather than lower, there is enough wiggle room in generations old 4k phone video to do something better in 7nm. We could perhaps be benefited if the solution is also highly optimised hardware design wise compared to a weapon camera. Also, how many times slower would it have to be to do 6k p24 than weapon max framerate max quality? Some Ambarella chips, uses to cheap cameras, have been optimised for 16mp frames for like around 5 years, and for the last few years 8k (as the GoPro hero might get) but ingress might be much higher again (haven't kept up with the specs). Ingressing and recording is not suchnan issue if you have suitable storage, it is the compresion that tends to be an issue.

So it is all out there up in the air.

I'm referring to processing, not capture.

Call it a red computer with OS tailored for all (?) things to do with motion pictures.

Sorry Mike, I quoted the wrong message. I was meaning to reply to a message on a phone compared to a Red camera. Sorry again.

I'm still dreaming, of a RedRay Phone for xmas. Even an 4k one.

Two guesses:

1. Some type of quantum computer or device.

2. A VR type display system that does not use special or uncomfortable glasses.

I don't think it's a product or service in a related space to RED otherwise it would make sense for it to just be a RED product/IP.
I'm betting its something solar or energy related and more of a challenge or abet to Tesla and Musk's way of thinking as Jim is on the same level.

either way we'll all know soon hopefully. :)

Agree with all the above. And there is so much happening in every field of endeavor that it is almost impossible to come up with something earth shattering to match the imaginations of REDusers. So I think we should tone down our Buck Rogers expectations.

However, there is ample opportunity to take something previously imagined and tried but not pursued to full extent. This may be where Jim and his band of merry people have found success. That was, after all how the 4k RED camera came about. It was not the first camera, but instead the first affordable "professional" camera.

It has been fun trying to guess, but I think it will be even more pleasing to dive in to the use and growth of the actual "thing."

how about teleportation?

Only way for teleportation to work is if it's opening a wormhole. By disassembling your particles at one end and assembling it at another, how do you know that you don't die whenever you teleport yourself? The copy wouldn't know since that "you" would believe it worked. I've never been fond of teleportation, because I think that if we ever made it work, it would be the death of us all... literary :tongue_smilie:

Musk's way of thinking as Jim is on the same level.

No offense to Jim as he has been very successful, but I don't think Musk has an equal right now. Look at Musk's past and current work -- paypal, Tesla, Space-X -- and compare these to Oakley and RED. While both Oakley and RED have been great successes, they were both just optimizations of something that already existed. Better mousetraps. There is a huge difference between truly creating a space, especially one like Tesla, and just furthering an existing space like sunglasses. It's like iPhone vs the various Android phones. Nobody would credit anyone on the Android side with creating the modern mobile phone, even though there are some pretty decent Android phones out there now. I know people here will kick and scream about RED "disrupting the market", and that may be true, but that is not the same as creating an entirely new market.

Maybe with this new project we'll see something truly new, but I am guessing it will be a better version of something we have seen before.

Electric cars existed before Tesla, so did space travel and online payment systems. Although i agree Jim's products are of less significance to the human race. Maybe this new thing will change that.

Good points... and just like PayPal gave Musk the success he needed to build later successes, so it may be Oakley and RED built that platform for Jim to expand his horizons. Like Musk, Jim needs new conquests it seems.

Some have painted Steve Jobs as some great mind when in fact he was a one-trick pony, for the most part. Musk is as of yet unequaled, but let's not forget others like Richard Branson and especially Jeff Bezos. Musk and Bezos may become known as the two greatest innovators of our time.

There's room for more, but getting it done will be what determines the legacy.

Ok, let's start here: Is it bigger than a breadbox?

It's a breadbox isn't it?

My girlfriend once met met at home after work and said "I've got a surprise present for you! I bet you can't guess what it is!" "Is it bigger than a bread box?" "..." "..." It was bread from our favorite bakery. :D

That's how life goes. The innovators always come too early. And then some louder-less-nerdy guys, better at synthetizing, selling and promoting things, come into play :)
That's how Steve Jobs succeded. The first 4k camera, the Dalsa Origin, was shown at NAB in 2003, years before Red. Pop Art was created in the UK before Andy Warhol, etc etc.
Two different types of intelligences which, together, lead to some crazy products. Real innovators are often so crappy and stupid at making their creation shine. Woz and Steve Jobs, Yves St Laurent and Pierre Bergé, and many others, were lucky enough to meet their counterpart and work together. I think I've read on this forum that some Dalsa guys worked at Red too. It's just sad that so many talented guys will stay unknown.

Exactly. Where are you. And you need to have three degrees, bright green eyes, blond hair, and 21.
