  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New pricing...

Ok great...we know the price-list release is gonna be good for us, so let's wait...Drumroll............

since when does price dictate the quality of products. wether or not someone wants to shoot his vacation footage on RED or not is up to the consumer. not too long ago RED had a kids camp where they had a bunch of 10 and 12 year old kids running around shooting stuff on RED cameras. yes 10 year olds were using your professional tools exactly the way you do.. OMG what a disgrace that you use the same tools to make your art that 10 year olds do. (sarcasm but it is 100 % TRUE). I think RED envisions tons of people owning their cameras, and putting them to all different kinds of uses. RED's philosophy from the very beginning, I thought, was about bringing amazing quality to the market at affordable prices. thank you for the Scarlet, it was a step in the right direction. Now hopefully we can get even better quality for lower prices.

either way I have a number in my mind that I personally am hoping for so I can get in on an EPIC so maybe I'm biased. but they did hold a kids camp and kids can't spend $40k on a camera setup. (I can but I won't)

Yeah, and given the growth of new cable networks, I wouldn't be surprised if this footage is broadcast on "Cooking Channel 3", Food Networks latest and greatest hyper targeted niche channel, customized for the viewing needs of young bourgeois families all across America.

ALL technology is getting cheaper. Both for cameras...AND distribution.

While there may be millions of affordable Epics drowning the marketplace by the end of the decade, there will by then also likely be 100's of new cable networks.

Those camera's will not have gone to waste, trust me.

I think there is going to be an upgrade path, afordable one, from Scarlet to Epic.
And the end of the Scarlet program.
And I will be as happy as I can be.
As much as I love my Scarlet I'd like an EPIC in my hands, thank you very much.

I hope the price reduction will be reasonable, so that the many small businesses who invested in Epic, like ours, do not see a large revenue cut from their gear this year, which has already been unusually hard on all of us. I hope that our Epic will retain some reasonable portion of its value for rental to our own prods on budgets shown to clients, and for resale (we're not getting out of the business, but some people want that option) and rentals to others.

As a side note I also hope that high budget productions, where everyone is paid fairly and there is ample crew and ample lighting, see an increase in production numbers in 2013 - so that those of us who live in big cities and do not have a day job nor rich parents can continue to pay off our mortgages.

Most of all I hope that none of us have a reason to say "Gee, that was foolish, I really should have invested in an Alexa instead of losing all that money." A lot of customers saying that could not be good for Red.
 
A cheaper upgrade will accelerate the race to the bottom in less saturated markets, but not everything is about that dollar. Are you creating relationships, learning more about the craft and creative enterprise?

I can safely say that I have learned more in the past year about the process than I did in 4 years at film school, and that's where the real value is for me. Many would disagree, but I'm excited to keep learning to where I can work full time for myself. And all that work isn't really work, it's play.

Ok my lame attempt at humor sucked. I re-wrote it. I work in Cable TV, I can't help it. I see new networks being launched as often as new camera's are announced. Cameras and distribution are working in lock-step. I wish people would see that.

There is more opportunity for content than ever. Cameras dropping in price is not necessarily a bad thing. There are more and more venues for our work than ever before. What will separate us, unfortunately, isn't the expense of our gear anymore. It's how good we are, how good we are are nurturing clients, and our ability to stay ahead of the curve.

RED's excellence at the latter makes them a good partner to invest in, during this turbulent, uncharted era were all wading into.

I personally think this business will change so rapidly quite soon so most producers/agencies etc will need to think extremely different or they will be pushed out..

We are now at the point where, for most shoots, good enough camera gear cost less than what the producer paid for the car that he drives to the set... The lab costs are hatched out of the budgets... The colorist use a for free (resolve) software... the compositor sits on a for free version of smoke.... the arri laser film recorder that used to make 5 bucks a frame and 1 frame every 4th second striking film prints is now replaced with a laptop making 4k DCP's... Kids will most likely learn how to make DCP's first year in film school, if they did not lear it at the red camp... Remember this is something that was handled by old men dressed in white coats about 2 years ago for every film...
 
LOL You are an expert to tease us all... I imagine your wife, she should become crazy at home :) Announcement to announce another announcement ;-) In the meantime, mouth to mouth, everyone knows about :D
 
If a movie shot on a 5D can make a hundred million, I'm sure that production companies will look past how "cheap" the Epic becomes and let the specs and overall image quality speak for itself.
