  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro

I got to see one today in real life, finally, it looks shorter, squat, and grey, looks horrible, like a cheap Chinese knockoff compared to the one last year they were advertising in the cinema.

I tested the weight of the device, and joked to the sales man that Apple could have legal hassles when women started killing their husbands by throwing it at them if they used it too much.

We've had ours for over a month.

It aint cheap in machine standards.

Its a work of art and damn is it fast!!

Well, I just ordered the 6 core with D700's + 512GB storage

Apple estimated about 6 weeks for delivery!

Next stage storage - looking at the Areca or Pegasus 2 solutions but still undecided. Also looking at the Decklink Studio 4K unit and then I'll need a 4K monitor....and then I'll need to find some work to pay for everything :scared:

Scott

FYI on the Pegasus 2.

Tested our Pegasus 2 with 4 x WD 1TB 32MB Cache drives Stripped as one.

BMD Disk Speed shows avg 450MB.

The drives are from a few old Mac Pro's used as local.

The Pegasus 2 was an empty shell for 600 + US.

New Dev Build last night and just like the last two, it's focusing on A/V. No word on what has been thrown into the mix for improvements.

I skipped the seed from last week and installed this one last night. Can't see anything new or improved, or nothing readily apparent. Very stable, runs better than any previous 10.9.1 or 10.9.2 build. I'd expect this one to go public really soon. Apple is also going to be bringing us the Thunderbolt networking update soon, but I expect that to come as a separate patch or in the 10.9.4 release.

Hi Eric

Where did you buy the Pegasus empty? Seems that Promise only sell this populated?

Scott

The Apple online store sells the 4-bay unit empty (at least in the US, can't speak to the UK). That's the only model you can get empty, however. I think the idea behind selling that model empty through Apple is to generate sales from people who want to put the internal drives from their old Mac Pro in it.

I'm I to assume that Titan is supported on 10.9.2 already or is it coming on 10.9.3?

How long are you guys waiting for your Garbage Can to arrive? I ordered 20 days ago and still no update on order status.... :/
Six weeks almost to the day for me (mid-February to April 1st). But it was great once it arrived.

Anything good is worth waiting for. But Apple really needs to get off their asses and get up to speed on this stuff.

I just received my unit last week that was marked as "April" for delivery. Ordered back in February, but I don't recall exactly when. I think it was about a 7 weeks, probably plus a day or two. It's a quad-core with D700's and 1TB flash. I'll be upgrading it to a 3GHz 10-core CPU sometime next week, I need to order that CPU now.

Not so sure it's an issue of Apple getting off their asses. Once they are caught up with initial demand, they should do just fine. I'm thinking the initial demand was quite substantial. We have already seen a massive improvement in wait times. Looks like we're getting int 5-week territory and that will continue to shrink. A couple of my bigger clients have ordered several Mac Pro systems. One of them placed multiple orders and I know their first shipment was for over 30 systems, most of them 6-core units. Apple has to walk a thin line between scaling up production lines which they will eventually have to downsize or just running at lower than adequate capacity until they get caught up. Not sure which is better. The larger Asian electronics integrators do better with this because as they scale down production of one item, they can shift to producing something else. That's what they do, contract assembly and integration. Apple has built their own facilities in Texas to handle this and they will scale to more products as time goes on. They have brought in Flextronics to assist in facility and line construction and to act as interim management, but this is a mostly Apple endeavor.

Got mine last Friday when I was out of town on a shoot still haven't even turned it on yet :( Swamped with work

Been following this thread and searching a few other places but as of yet haven't seen any answers... any word on how the D700s handle Red debayering in Resolve? Anyone been able to test that out? I'm able to get 1/4 res real time on a MacBook Pro retina from R1 footage so I'm sure the Mac Pro soars far beyond that.

New DevBuild. Same as the others with A/V focusing. They must be doing some serious refinement and bug squishing work given how rapidly these builds are being put out for testing.

Mine took 40 days to arrive.
