  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro

I'm questioning the value of the 6 to the 8 as well. If all processors were being used equally then the 8 is 12.5% faster than the six. But how often is that really happening? A BG_Render in AE will do that. I am not familiar with FCP's usage of the additional cores. But primarily I feel that the speed of the single proc might actually improve the user experience. I'm curious to see the test results that must be coming up in the next couple days.

Tricky regarding 6, 8 and 12 cores.
Most programs use multi core very poorly. After Effects is using mostly single core in many of its effects and is also not using much of the gpu either. However some plugins use both very well. Neat Video uses both multi cores and multi gpus and programs like Kronos does as well.

In our case (being red users) we use more multi core than most. The transcoding of red media uses multi cores very well.
Myself I'm still leaning towards a 12 core since Davinci and red transcoding is using multi cores so well. And also some of the plugins I use are heavy users of multiple cores. But I'm expecting the 12 core to be slower in Photoshop and probably often in After Effects as well due to the lower clock speed.

To be fair, Tim's first e-mail said something like "later in 2013." They never lead anyone to believe it was going to be, say, June.

haha you know the drill.

Apple users/haters always find something to bitch about.

To me, it was an awesome early christmas ;)

Yeah, when Cook announced it back in July 2012, I don't think anyone expected it on January 1st, 2013, or June for that matter... but December 30th for shipping? That's just a dick move.

And to be fair, these new mac are not shipping until December 30th, which means that nobody will receive them until January 2014 (except reviewers and a selected few)... so it is in fact misleading to claim to have met their target date. Either way, all they had to do was give a simple update to the public, but they didn't and that is what bugs me.

Now Apple is playing the Vaporware game just like everyone else. The funny thing is that if they just would have said early 2014, I would have just bought a new Mac Pro back in July of 2012... and still bought this new mac pro.

How so? You haven't received anything!

Brother its the thought and peace of mind that it actually exists that counts.

I cant be jaded with an option that is available.

Try being an early adopter to say a Black Magic Cinema Camera or the vaporware 4K option.

All I can say is thanks Grant, with the first debacle I pushed myself to a BT Scarlet ;)

…Wish someone would plug it into the 4K monitor and confirm or deny whether or not we get DP1.2 MST for 4K @ 60Hz out of a single Thunderbolt port. The Verge showed the Mac Pro playing videos at 4K yesterday in their first video, but no real info.

Don't get me started, bro. I'm right there with you...

Hope I don't come off as jaded... maybe lost in translation, but I'm just pissed about the Apple's communication because I want this product so much. Like I said before, I'm a life-long Apple user... we're probably more vocal than the haters!

Are people really complaining about Apple nearly missing their delivery deadline by one day? On a RED form of all places? Whatever happened to "everything in life changes including delivery dates"?

Question, since I know we all wanted to skirt this purchase in for 2013's tax season. But I know Apple doesn't fully charge till it ships:

Since I'm not billed in full till january (mid/late) when it ships. But I got the receipt from Apple for the full amount. Can I apply that to this year's (2013's) taxes?

no.

Well...shit.

Exactly… that's why I bought a bunch of other junk that was in stock (Pegasus TB2 raid, monitor…), so at least a third of the system will be in 2013. As soon as it didn't show up in the store the first Tuesday of December, I knew I wouldn't have been able to deduct for this year. At least next year starts in the negative, there is that.

Which Pegasus RAID? If so I may just drop the coin on one NOW to at least get the similar value in of what the Mac Pro's deduction WOULD have been.

People seem to be assuming Apple fully understood how long it would take to start shipping the new MacPros, then, made a cynical self serving choice to keep that to themselves.

That's possible, but are you sure about that? Maybe it's just very difficult, even with all of Apple's resources. Just sayin'

I got the Pegasus 2 R6 12TB (the 6x2tb one). I'm just a one man show, so I don't need a ton of storage, just some speed. I'll probably have no more than 4-5TB on it an any given time.

Got word from ATTO that the SAS R680 and Celicity 41ES (Fibre) are compliant with TB.

Have to find a TB enclosure for the ATTO, DeckLink and ROCKET cards.

We have the Sonnet and a Magma but will this GPU talk, do we still need it with the 12-Core/D700 config?
