  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro coming in April

I concur that due to technological advancements and the new behaviors they have enabled that the days of mass market towers are numbered. This could easily lead our industry back to high markup specialty workstations at inflated prices - though, to be fair, a top of the line MacPro tower is hardly cheap. It's disappointing that Tim Cook didn't even hint at new MacPros coming down the pike other than noting new products (generic) in the fall.

FWIW I do think Apple will release one last MacPro iteration in a rack mountable casing with at least 4 PCIe 3.0 slots within a year. My assumption is that they are waiting for a nexus of component availability that likely includes upcoming CPU options. I am particularly interested in seeing them support I/O choices like HDMI 2.0, dual channel Thunderbolt, USB 3, etc that can extend the useful life of the investment. I also anticipate that even the base MacPro GPU will be able to do 4K to support their new displays.

IMO the lynchpin is Apple releasing a 40-65" UHD display with built in processing that is a cross between an iMac on steroids (screen size, not compute power) and a TV which would have the potential to sell in quantities that make sense from a business perspective. I fully expect them to have such a thing on the market for the Christmas selling season and a hot new MacPro to pair with it might be a compelling pitch to the pro market. Well, I can hope can't I?

Super computers might get cheap in the short term, but who will want to make them in the long term if the unit sales are close to .0001 the size of tablets/phones/laptops/ what have you... Our days look numbered whether a new mac pro comes out ever or not... pretty soon no one will want in on this market and then we're going to be paying out the a$$!

Gamers still need quite big computer, and for sure powerfull gpu. I think we own them some dev in gpu computer power. But yeah I follow you, and I'm also a bit afraid, even with OS that goes towards mobile hardware such as smart phone and tablet. Tower computer and even laptop sells are going down. I hope linux will be super supported when we'll all have to do the move;-)
