  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro coming in April

funny, I heard from several people saying that Apple are going to announce a new MacPro late march or in april....but then of course you can never really be sure about anything with the mac cult until the day it happens. would be nice though ^^ about bloody time.
 
NAB and WWDC are definitely the times for Apple to talk about their Pro Systems. They are maddeningly secretive, which is not very helpful for businesses that use them as suppliers for their tools. Not very many companies, including Apple, will put up with so much uncertainty for their future work. Uncertainty leads companies to search for other sources .... unfortunately the cost is rather high ..... learning the intricate details and pitfalls of working with Microsoft or Linux software. Though powerful tools, they simply require a huge amount of time away from your job, to learn how to do your job all over again. Most suppliers provide a product roadmap .... even though the timing is often uncertain. The main thing they provide is the certainty of continued support and development. Apple has taken away that certainty by purposefully hiding their professional roadmap, not providing updated hardware for the pro-market that matches updates by other hardware makers, and - without warning - stripping away a major professional tool (FCP7) - then giving it back - and replacing it with a half-ready follow-up (FCPX) that has taken months to catch up to where it comes close to matching what it replaces. Such whip-sawing reminds me of the halcyon days of Gil Amelio ( if I had only bought Apple at $2 per share!!).
I suspect that there is a very large number of workstation orders on hold pending NAB or WWDC. I Apple announces a form-factor that appears trust-worthy and future oriented, those orders will go to Cupertino; however, failure to announce such a product by the end of WWDC may send a lot of people scurrying to HP and the generic component suppliers.
I do wonder how the large production shops and university departments with dozens/hundreds of Macs are handling this. SCAD - Savannah College of Art and Design has one of the top 3D and game design departments, and they have labs filled with Mac Pros. The "trickle down" is huge. Thousands of college students getting iPads, Airs and Mac Book Pros will easily drift over to the progressively more Mac-like competition - especially if all their educational platforms drift over to Microsoft.
And then there is Adobe..... they follow the market and develop for the ones that are buying. How many video professionals would buy a Mac if they had slower/poorer upgrades or absent development for ........ Davinci ........ Premiere ......... Adobe Suite .......... Red Cine X?
All this will be MUCH clearer by April 11 or mid June.
 
every business needs some level of certainty in IT. I really don't know why the mac guys are holding out. Even if a new Mac Pro comes out this year there's no guarantee that its development will continue as a platform. Consumer devices are far too profitable by comparison, and Apple have been moving away from the Pro level for years.

Now if only Apple would fix QT so that it works effectively on PC. But they never will.
 
I think the earliest we could hope would be June 2013.

Apple has become a lost cause for creatives. All hype and marketing and no substance. They used to make software that was powerful,elegant and just worked. Im even about to ditch my iPhone as the interface feels like a 5 year old programmed it.

FCPX is a disaster as far as using it for any kind of long form heavy lift editing....the only people pushing FCPX for any serious editing are fan boys or people who make money from training....its the butt of every NLE joke in Hollywood. And still no new powermac....go into any Apple store and see if they have a tower....if they do its hidden in a corner.

They are a consumer gadget company now, period....and they arent even that good at that anymore as they put out beta software that does the bare minimum, horde their cash, and sue other companies in their spare time.

They are the epitome of fashion NOT function and the sheen has worn of for this long time Apple fan.
 
I guess I'm lucky. I've been editing native RED files on my Macbook Retina using FCPX with an external REDRocket Card just fine. Wham bam thank you man and pocket that fat cheque before they catch on that my setup is just a fashion statement.

What movie Bob? As far as I know NOT ONE even semi known feature has been cut on FCPX as of yet. Please share the feature and the budget of the feature you are talking about. Are you even a feature film editor? And youre cutting on a laptop??? That just gave you away. You mixing with headphones too?

You say youre lucky, but my guess is we are talking about totally different types of editing. Dont pretend we are talking about the same kind of work because we are not, you are being a troll fanboy. Name ONE feature with a budget over even 1 million which is almost micro budget that has edited on FCPX.

What was the point of your post?

Fair enough. I'm not cutting a feature on FCPX but I use it on a daily basis. I also have Premier Pro and haven't touched it in months as I can cut way faster on FCPX for what I do. I was waiting for a new tower and got a new laptop to tie my over. Guess what? I was blown away at what I am able to achieve with it. Sure there are some limitations but I'm still able to cut natively with zero issues. I took offence to your lost cause towards creatives comment as I don't agree obviously.

Then Bob, I apologize for the tone of the response.

Its frustrating to me when people who dont edit features for a living try and tell me that FCPX is just fine. And you know why? Because I cut my teeth on FCP before I got into long form features, and I cut features on FCP 7 as well.....so Im frustrated at Apple for screwing the pooch on FCPX for feature editors so bad that its become a joke in Hollywood...and Im frustrated when I have to argue with people that just like what they use and are invested in at the expense of what reality is.

If I didnt have a vested interest in Apple as a workflow then I wouldnt even care...but not calling Apple out with something this flawed when FCP 7 had made such big inroads lets Apple continue down the path they are on, and to me and most people like me...they are ignoring our needs on the high end and it not only saddens me but it makes me mad. I dont wanna use a Windows machine but as we all wait hoping Apple throws us a bone, I grow more and more tired and irritated with their whole attitude.

I understand the lure of fighting for what you use as a creative tool at the expense of taking your head out of the clouds, I get caught up in it as well...but as creative professionals we would be better served calling companies out when our needs arent being served than to argue with each other over which team we want to win...go outside of Reduser and all the complaints you see have almost NOTHING to do with the Red camera and everything to do with this kind of attitude by owners who just need constant assurance what they have is the best no matter what the rest of the world is doing.

Hopefully you can understand a little where Im coming from, I want kick ass tools...I dont wanna root for any team. No offense meant to you personally.

You couldnt have left it at "well put" You had to make a snide comment to a post that quite frankly might have been a bit mean spirited but had substance. Your post however has nothing. Why post that? Whats the point? How old are you? You look old so Im confused.

I didn't really see much substance in the post...granted fcpx is not the answer for features right now. However, saying that apple is a lost cause for creatives is really a lame elitist comment. For us poor fucks (sarcasm), that don't cut features, fcpx10.0.7 is an awesome piece of software.

Like I said, no offense was meant and I should probably have clarified which creatives I was talking about. Im not trying to be elitist as you say, I was giving a realistic idea of how useless this software is for feature films, something the old FCP was useful for and how frustrating that is for someone who loved FCP7 and Apple not to long ago.

If you can do everything you need to do on a laptop in iMov...I mean FCPX...more power to you, that youtube and Ken Burns button must be awesome for you.
