  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Mac Pro coming in April

BULLSHIT! At least my Mac Pro 2009 was a good investment.

No. They weren't. They were off site having private meetings with press and customers. The meetings were to promote features in FCP X 10.0.8 and their growing ecosystem. Integration with Cantemo Portal (a third party MAM) was demo'ed. Hardware questions were side-stepped right from the beginning.

Do these people actually know any real pros beyond guys hacking together wedding videos in motel rooms?

Have they ever seen a real post house, even a boutique one like ours? Do they really think we give a rat's ass about how stylish, thin or light our computers are? Please give me the ugliest, most beige, hugest heavy brick you can find, and make it powerful, and I will be happy.

The pro market is so tiny for them its not at all profitable for them. They sell probably 100x more iMacs and Macbooks than they do towers.

We've done this discussion before, but here we go:

Audi makes the R8 but it sells a lot less than the A3. Then why do they do it? The R8 chassis does Endurance racing, GT racing, etc. Its their flagship, the one that represents the best Audi has to offer in technology. The MacPro is the R8 of Apple. The Macbook Pro Retina is the R8 Spider! :)

Except that doing races and stuff is marketing because people watch it, you don't see a movie and it shouts out that these professionals who made this movie use Mac Pro's.
No one in public give a damn on what something was made, a GT car is viewed by the public and then they might want to buy their own Audi, but do they see a movie, some architecture etc. and goes "got damn I need the Mac Pro because of this".

The Mac Pro is not their flag ship, it's nothing to them. The Ipad is their flagship.

I think that's pretty dead on. The RED HP Z820 was looking pretty good at NAB. Tons of PCI slots. I'll hold out for a few more months as my 2010 12 Core still handles 5k nicely, but I don't need much of a push nowadays

While the average movie goer may have no interest in what a film is edited on you are completely ignoring the enthusiast, the sort of person who picks up the Blu-ray disc just so they can watch the behind the scenes or goes online to learn about this sort of stuff and if they go to the behind the scenes and the desks are covered in Mac Pros that sends something to the impressionable young filmmaker or editor, if you go to a studio and every desk has a mac, if you meet a filmmaker and they have a mac pro, right or wrong people do say "I need a mac pro because of this"
The Mac Pro is not "Nothing to them."
 
As far as I'm concerned Apple just needs to open up ProRes so Windows can write the codec. Then these discussions can cease to exist as far as I'm concerned because Apple in the pro market will be dead to me. And that pains me to say as someone who has 8 MacPro's right now. Oh, Apple how you like to disappoint.

They are not trying to disappoint you, they are leveraging their software IP to the fullest. ;-) it is how they have survived for so long. This is not likely to change.

As much as I want to agree with that statement 100%, I can't... I haven't built, or willingly used, a BEIGE computer since sometime in like, uh, 1996. Beige sucks. :)

...All the best cases come in black, or can be painted.

What worries me from a post perspective, is as the demand rapidly declines for expandable desktops and starts to fall for maybe even laptops because of the popularity of more mobile solutions for non professionals, where does that leave us? I'm saying look out, 5, 10, 15 years... Will Avid be able to handle 6k raw on an iPad, or are we all going to head back into proprietary standalone hardware solutions for post production...? Cuz if so, I want out of post now, its going to go back to pre FCP prices if we become too small a niche to sell to for cheap... I mean how many people besides IT, and post production will need these giant super computers in the coming decades? Will cloud computing become a viable post production path at all? Where will our content live and what will cut it if everyone just needs an iPhone or an Iwatch for their angry birds and email? That scares the heck out of me!

Super computers might get cheap in the short term, but who will want to make them in the long term if the unit sales are close to .0001 the size of tablets/phones/laptops/ what have you... Our days look numbered whether a new mac pro comes out ever or not... pretty soon no one will want in on this market and then we're going to be paying out the a$$!

Ha ha. I guess the Mac Pro is silver, but I'd rather have a beige 24 (or even 70s-style simulated wood grain) core than a silver 12.
 
I'd do wood grain for sure! :)
