  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW Firmware scare!!

Used the camera yesterday for the first time with the new firmware on a shoot (about 5 hours with stops between takes). The camera was indeed hot, and temperature was between 46-65 degrees. It was an indoor situation and a bit hot. Didn't change the fans settings. I have another issue with the camera that is not related to firmware. Is this temperature normal?

Got a little scared after reading this....set the fan to auto and it actually kicked in right away...is there any official word on this yet?

I'm pretty sure that at 75C the camera will override user settings, stop recording, and put the fan on max, then do an auto shutdown if it gets any hotter to prevent damage. But it is a beta.

Hence why i never use BETA builds ...

I thought the early builds for M cameras were beta? Sure it will be the same for Dragon. :D

Agreed. Sometimes I feel like the last person upgrading firmware. I remember early Avid upgrades that were unstable causing a lot of headaches.

I installed the firmware yesterday and the fan control setting defaulted to adaptative - I too left the camera unattended for a couple minutes but then I noticed how silent the camera was and the temp was in the high forties. Quickly switched the fan control to AUTO and everything came back down.

Maybe if I had not noticed in time I would be in the same boat. I really hope your camera is ok.

Forties is high? I almost always work at +50

Shot Saturday and Sunday with the Beta build on the main camera (stable build in the spare body on the shelf) long days 12 -14 hours each, no shutdowns (hot swapping batteries so the client monitor was always up) in a hot hot hot kitchen studio - no troubles at all. In fact I love the new UI!

Now I didn't use the sleep mode - it's just something that isn't useful to me or my style of shooting - so maybe that particular setting is the culprit? & since our shots themselves are short, and our setups are long, I have the freedom of letting the fan run a full blast when it needs to.

All good here. Shot a 3 hr shoot without issues. Like Glen, I didn't use or cared for sleep mode. I also changed the fans to "quiet preview and recording" instead of adaptive or auto as both of those I could hear the fans (the shoot was an interview so noise was not desired). I didn't notice any significant temperature increase. Good luck!

Hey Bob.. No I did not. In short, I came back to the camera, and the fans were not running, but the camera was EXTREMELY HOT. I let it cool, and tried to restart it.. No good.. Just waiting on word from RED as to what they will do. I realize that a Beta build is not to be used on commercial productions, but I don't think they are suppose to be dangerous to the camera at that stage.

RED has always taken good care of me.. I'm sure this time will be no different.

Weird. Have not had this happen with the latest firmware <knock wood>. However, I had essentially this same issue with my EPIC-M way back in the early days. Fans would not operate, or I should say would stop operating at an intermittent interval, even when set to on at whatever percentage, camera would get super hot and I had to power down. Deanan sent me an internal firmware build that fixed the issue. He said I didn't need to panic over it as the camera did have safeties built-in and it would not allow itself to overheat, no matter what. Not sure how that aspect of it works. Since then, I have had no issues, in over 2 years. Or at least no issues with overheating. I do not have the new fans in either my EPIC-M or EPIC-X. I suppose they're on my "going to buy" list, just haven't got around to messing with it.

All that said, I haven't given the latest firmware a real workout though. Haven't been shooting much at all lately, I guess that's why the new fans, motion mount, etc.. are not already ordered. I'm patiently waiting for Dragon and will go from there I guess...

Well so far so bad. RED cannot reproduce the problem so they are suspecting it's my fault. As for a loaner, there are no EPICs available and client will not accept a Scarlet. So before the camera even reaches RED's door, I am down $2,000.00

Something tells me this is going to be devastating.

I swear guys, the EPIC was sitting on a table. It had performed perfectly for 12 hours the day before.. It was turned on with old firmware and looked perfect.. The new firmware was installed and looked perferct. ALL I DID was turn on the sleep mode and walked away. Because of my hearing loss, I cannot hear the fans go off and on.. When I came back 30min later it was an oven.. I baby my camera, I did not break it.

Very stressed out about all this. Sending camera in tonight but I fear damage has already been done.

I will never go within a million miles of the word BETA again.. Lesson learned.
