  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Final Cut Studio Released!

Native support to me means anything you can very quickly get into Final Cut Pro.

Native support means no transcoding. It doesn't mean it accesses the original file in its original file format, it does mean that it can take the essence and rewrap it in Quicktime without altering the data. So instead of a potentially lengthy transcode, you get a quick data import and rewrap. So your 5 minute transcode becomes more like a 10 second data copy.

Yeah, I don't understand why actual R3Ds in the timeline is so important. If your complaint is you need double the disk space, my answer is that for paying jobs you need a backup anyway, so it might as well be the original cam files on a cheap FW drive.

For those complaining about time, it's a straight file copy time wise for native re-wraps, so that's not too bad either.

Apple has their reasons for re-wrapping media. For XDCAM material, MPEG hints go in the Quicktime header so the files open instantly. For R3Ds, all the 2GB file segments get coalesced into one file for better media management, as well as re-wrapped native 12bit R3Ds getting full system-wide support after they're quicktimes.

Regardless, it's their method now and there is no evidence that it's going to change anytime soon. At least it's not a transcode.

Anyone care to guess why they dropped the number designation on this revision? It's not officially called Final Cut Studio3, just Final Cut Studio.

Well I'm a bit annoyed and yet happy at how early and random this release seemed although ppl did say "July will be a good month for editors"...but tbh snow leopard in September...will FCS take advantage of it?cause I can't imagine a simple software update would suddenly change everything...maybe I'm just being foolish and naive but still...

Snow leopard wouldve been a beautiful thing to test FCS with due to the speed increases...

And about Color supporting 4K "native" RED format is probably a lie. There is still no native support of .r3d :embarassed:

It depends what you call "native"
PS: ask Luki what it thinks about native support ;-)!

4k is a great improvement "and threat btw" in the DI direction!

You can access the RAW settings in Adobe Premeire CS4 (and I think Vegas 9?) so I'm surprised FCP is still behind the curve.

Oh, so apparently one CAN create and burn a Blu-ray disc in Compressor. Just not on DVD SP. And once you've burned the disc, you can't play back the footage on your Mac, right?

Yeah, but you can export and play the footage on your iphone, how about that... that´s pretty cool uh?

(I too want blu-ray support!)

It's utterly obnoxious that they don't have BD-ROM playback support built in to OSX yet, although the addition of an H.264 Blu-ray compatible codec in Compressor is a very welcome change. I've been making Blu-ray discs on my Mac from FCP for over a year now, but it meant taking an intermediate step into After Effects and rendering the final movie out from there. Talk about inconvenient. Finally we have a way to export the timeline straight to BD-R from right within FCS.

I personally don't really have an inclination to watch movies on my computer, but it does seem a bit silly that they won't at least give us the option.

I don't watch movies on my computer, but whenever I burn a DVD in DVDSP the first thing I do is play it on my Mac to see if it works. Without Blu-ray playback on OSX, I have to remove the disc from the Mac, take it to the stand-alone Blu-ray player, and test it out there. It's not a huge deal, but it is irritating.

At least we can now burn the damn things!

What about support for 3K and Scarlet...does FCP (newest version now) support this format? Or will it?

Be nice to hear from RED to at least acknowledge weather or not they are working closely with Apple...are you RED?

Don't think Apple will have a BluRay burner coming out soon.:banghead:

It's certainly possible we will see one around the end of the year after 10.6 comes out but I'm certainly not going to hold my breath.
Especially since I would have to either mod my macbook pro or get an external drive to take advantage of any playback software they might create.

If anyone wants a great external Blu-Ray solution, Mac or PC, I've got a great recommendation. Buy the LG 6X internal unit:

And put it inside one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817145065

Total cost is about $245 before shipping/tax. And gives a nice external unit with eSATA, FW800, FW400 and USB2 interfaces. I put one of these together about a month ago and it's awesome. Works great in OSX and Windows, even works great off my old Macbook Pro via eSATA or FW800.

I can author Blu-Ray just fine in OSX with Adobe CS4. Have to reboot into windows to test it out. LOL. F.U, Apple.

I've asked this a few times, but no one seems to know...

Does the new Color perform debayering of the R3D files?

Thanks, Nick.
