  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Final Cut Studio Released!

I would say it does, since the "old version" does. I guess I'm not sure what you're asking, Nick. Any application that displays an image from the R3D files is "debayering". Perhaps you're asking if it will do a full resolution / full quality debayer? If so, I think/hope so since Apple is making a big deal about Color now supporting 4K.

I still don't get the workflow..does anyone know what it is?

My guess...you take 2K proxies into FCP 7, edit it, and then you export the full 4K images into color for finishing and send out?

So is the end product then using the full resolution of the RED ONE camera?

well surely the workflow involves 4k from start to finish because if you start with 2k and end with 4k arent you up-rezzing the images? You'd take your 4k, apply the 4444 pro res codec and then export that to color where you finish off with exporting as a 4k Digital Cinema file...correct?

""" Native Workflow """

""" Native Workflow """

I believe the high-end 4K workflow in FCS is this:
• Ingest in L&T via """native""" quality. Now you have 2K REDCODE RAW files wrapped in QT for editing.
• Once pictures is locked, send to Color.
• Work on 4K RAW REDCODE in the RED tab in Color for maximum manipulation.
• Render out 4K DPX or 2K ProRes 4x4

This is the workflow i have been using in FCS2, but without the 4K option.

Disclaimer: This info is from Apple documents, not actual testing.
Will be happy to hear about this workflow & actual test results.

I walked into the Apple Store in Sydney and was able to buy the upgrade on the spot!

Installing now. My Red Rocket arrives in a couple of days. What a great week!

Snow Ron Shai...the workflow you described is exactly what my guess is that it is with the new Final Cut Studio...so ultimately you will be rendering out 4K images out of color without loosing any resolution from the original r3d...I think.

Any confirmation on this would be appreciated.

Also, how the heck is Final Cut going to handle 3K Scarlet Images? Or is Apple and RED going to address that in 6 months when that stuff comes out?

PRORES does NOT do 3K so I don't know how Final Cut Pro will work with Scarlet...does anyone here know how Apple will deal with this...or rather how RED will help Apple deal with this?

Just curious.

can you export with a full debayer from COLOR?
thats the big question.

The even bigger is:
Does the RED room finally give an RGB colorspace that isn't f***'ed up when you start pulling the drawers, because does all RAW (which in the current version means that you re-introduce noise the same way you can in RC/RA).

And: (fanfare)
Will RedRocket serve Color with a full debayer rgb image without rendering DPX's?

I don't mind the dpx's, though. They just take time/space.

Anyho:
Hi gang!

I'll be backer soon...

Cheers!

Got mine on Friday @ apple store in sherman Oaks CA

PRORES does NOT do 3K so I don't know how Final Cut Pro will work with Scarlet...does anyone here know how Apple will deal with this...or rather how RED will help Apple deal with this?

Just curious.

You can encode to ProRes at just about any frame size - all the way up to full 4K. So, yes you can encode to ProRes at 3K.

But will it play back in RT with 3k...? I doubt.

Prores is RT for up to 1920 format... on a standard configuration.

My assuptions are not based on tests.

Pat

FCP has a number of 'blessed' frame sizes that work with RT. In RED land, the following frame sizes run in RT with ProRes:

1024x512
1024x576
1280x720
1920x1080
2048x1024
2048x1152

We can thank RED for the 2K RT as well as the 1K 2:1 & 16:9.

I'm certain that there will be a RT solution for Scarlet's 3K when it is released.

new ProRes settings

new ProRes settings

Do the new ProRes codecs appear in RedAlert, specifically the 4444 codec ?
Is there a gamma shift for the rendered output when compared to what is visible in RedAlert ?
