  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Final Cut Studio Released!

"Native support" to me would imply dragging an .r3d file right from my finder into the FCP project bin and being able to use that clip in my timeline. Currently, I get a message that says "File Error: Unknown File."

Semantics, I suppose... But in this regard, this means Final Cut doesn't support any format "natively" that isn't originated in a QuickTime container.

I'm assuming the new ProRes 4444 means 4:4:4 plus 4k? That would make sense, because there's not many 4:4:4 formats that aren't 4k, right?

The extra 4 is an alfa channel it's not 4k despite the new 4k support.

Price has dropped too:

Full price went from $1299 to $999
Upgrade went from $499 to $299.

Thats at least half good news for me, I probably don't need the new final cut studio just yet however I got FCS 2 so recently that I haven't even had a chance to cut a new project on it.

Spoke to an Aple rep a while back he said that if you purchase FCS2 with in 6 months before the release of FCS3 you could get a discount on the upgrade price. Not sure how much of a discount that means but worth a haggle...

"Final Cut Pro XML Version 5 supports greater interoperability with third-party software by preserving additional settings and metadata during round-trip file interchange."

Could it be that this means we can round trip directly between FCP and Redcine?

(if so sorry Ian...)

Would of thought that refers to additional metadata support when roundtripping to already supported third-party products (or rather, products that already support the FCP XML format).

I don't think Ian's out of a job just yet!
Dom.

4K DPX out of Color is big. So is ProRes 4:4:4:4. I wonder what kind of horsepower a Mac Pro needs to play back 4:4:4:4 in real time?

The lack of Blu-ray burning & playback is frustrating...

Love the upgrade pricing. It's only $299 for me to go from FCP4 Production Suite to FCP7 Studio!

i am curious if color can render out full debayer---which i guess
and if fc7 is able to render in 10bit RGB and can read 4k files

I'm looking, but am I seeing that you STILL can't author BluRay in DVDSP?

That is correct. The Easy Export feature is part of FCP and Motion only and gives you enough to make a Blu-Ray disc. Basically your video content and a simple menu template system. It's similar to the authoring capabilities of say Roxio's Toast. For more complex Blu-ray discs, we're not quite there yet in FCS.

Lots to be happy about....

Lots to be happy about....

This is a significant release, and well timed after the somewhat disastrous 6.0.6 release. For editors, its a huge upgrade in functionality, especially in frame ramping, speed fx, alpha transitions, etc... For colorists, major benefits with the supported codecs, 4K and DPX support and what I hope is a big improvement in Color's stability in general.

All jokes aside I wonder how soon RED Rocket™ compatibility with happen.

I would think that someone at RED could answer that question. Wouldn't they be working with Apple to develop that kind of compatibility?

I think they'll just post it and let them do it themselves. Maybe Jannard will text Jobs to remind him to get off his arse and do it if it takes a while but that's about it... unless they also use Facebook. :)

Upgrades

Edit 2K in FCP7, Output 4K in Color 1.5
Many, many improvements in this release, which we have been waiting for a while:
• Faster, better performance [especially when 10.6 arrives]
• New ProRes Codecs - efficiency in 5 flavors.
• New speed tools - change the speed of a clip without rippling your timeline.
• Markers galore... in colors, finally. We have color tabs, too!
• Background batch exporting - save u much time, it will. So important.
• iChat theatre sharing from timeline, with timecode.
• Automatic Log & transfer... pop the card/disk, auto ingest...
• AVC-Intra Support- Natively. Well, until we know what that means...

That is just FCP7. Much more good stuff in there...
Hopefully, RED Rocket™™ support should be in there as well...
But, most of all... the Gamma issue. This has to be solved in this upgrade. Any info on that is welcomed.

This page has a bit of confusing info:

http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/broad-format-support.html

It seems like most of their 'native' support is advocated through log and transfer, which isn't all that native to me. But it says it has native camera support for AVC-Intra and DVCPROHD as well as XDCAM. Does that mean you can take mxf-wrapped P2 footage straight off your backup (or the cards I guess) and put it straight into the timeline?

If you can't drop anything other than a QT file into the timeline, I may have to upgrade to Adobe instead.

Native support to me means anything you can very quickly get into Final Cut Pro. So does that mean I can get these new file types quickly into the browser in Final Cut Pro if the files are already on my computer or do I have to use log and transfer within FCP? Not sure I understand the workflow for REDONE footage or for XDCAM footage.

Also, does this new version of FCP support 4K images being worked with natively within the FCP interface or are we still going to be working with 2K proxies? And will FCP 7 support 3K (Scarlet) video natively?

I hope RED and APPLE are on the same page.

What's the matter the like 10 seconds it might take to wrap your file into a quicktime on import isn't fast enough for you?
