  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NEW FF+ Cine Lenses... For DRAGON... In the works...

Fair enough. Well I'll be watching to see what you come up with. There certainly nothing wrong with the idea. And there definitely is room in the market for this niche of product. I just was curious on your level of expertise... If Iain Neal came out and said, "Hey I wanna create this new series of lenses", no one batt an eye as to his background to do it... Take that obvious example a step further, with similar logic, if Roger Deakins said the same thing, we all would be very interested to see the outcome... I think You get my point.

Sorry if I could think of no delicate way to convey my point, so I do hope you mean what you say and that you aren't offended... Good luck.

Absolutely no problem at all, really... I do understand were you come from, and only the Lens Manufacturing companies and their expert engineers, are the ones to hear what I really know about glass, within the Mechanical Engineering, Specific Barrel, Iris, Focus Marking Rings, Specific Technological possibilities with the actual Focusing system, exterior Design, internal components and the difference within the number of elements, floating elements, type of glass, type of glass polishing and coating technology, and so on...

So yes, not knowing what I do know about it, since as one of several things, I do keep them private, as I always intended to come forward to a product of my own, and did not wished to give any one any ideas of what and how I would do with it, but the time has come to move forward with it, and at last bring this new set to life.

Thanks, and look forward to be able to post, first designs and general specs... With schedules of first prototype... And looking forward to NAB 2014... ;)

FWIW I would think $8-10K per lens is the sweet spot unless you can get the kind of quality you're aiming for out the door for less. The upcoming Leica Summicron-C primes are expected to go for $16K each which I would consider a reference point, get too close to that number and I think sales get a lot tougher. Just my 2cents.

Cheers - #19

Totally agree with you Blair, and in fact that is our price point aimed for this lenses, and while they will not be Master Primes or Leica's, as simply will not be possible to have a Super Speed glass of that level at one third the price, but it is possible to have a Lens of that quality at about 80% with a speed in the T2 range, and this is what we'll be aiming for in this first set...

However, even in this first set, there will be a particular surprise for those that look for something truly special, and that could come in the form of a special material used for the shells.

Additionally what I will absolutely do is make sure that our offer in the first "100" sets is made right here at REDUSER, were we'll offer a very generous discount to this community for the first 100 sets sold, then we'll take them every were else, and take reservations sales form the floor at NAB too hopefully.

The next set in mind wil be in direct competition to the Master Primes Leica Summilux C. Primes in the 13-15k range.

Actually the worlds best high end optics are not in Austria or West Germany, they are in Woodland Hills, CA. Panavision Federal Systems makes the worlds most expensive and highest quality optics for military applications, like the amazing 100-6000 zoom found in our subs Periscopes, 9 feet long with 44 elements, power and autofocus (weighs 500+lbs) $1.2M each. Many former Panavision techs such as my self grind and repair lenses and go on to form companies like Uniqueoptics only to get sued out of business by Red.

Ha ha, funny you should mention such things, as that is the main reason I did not made my final decision till I meet up with the US company early this week, not saying whom they are, can not absolutely divulge such info at this time, but the work going on here in the US on some insanely specific, precise, highly technological advanced and simply almost hard to calculate on a MTF projection system, and it is in fact some of this company that hold the key to allow for a new type of lenses that looks out of the ordinary and in to the extraordinary....

If I can do with Cine Lenses, 10% of what RED has done in Digital Cinema Cameras then I will be an happy man!!

And that is were I am looking at... ;)

Ketch, have you taken a look at these...

http://matthewduclos.wordpress.com/...dds-more-xenon-focal-lengths-ahead-of-launch/

These Schneider Xenons seem to meet all of your criteria (size, speed, aesthetics, FF coverage, uniform barrel design, large focus scales and price) and they are going to start shipping very soon!!!! In face the first 3 focal lengths will ship this fall -- 35mm, 50mm, 75mm... and then TWO MORE the beginning of 2014 with a 25mm and 100mm adding to the expanding set... At $4K a lens, this is pretty hard to beat!

I think you should look into these, because your dream lenses already exist!

Christopher, without a doubt Schneider did a very good job with this lenses, but they do not meet my expectations... ;)

Final and decisive paperwork could be completed in the next month and I'll be able to post some design and specs on my lenses, including some of the R&D done in the past 6 years, and were I have been going with this lenses, and were I will be going with them together with the partner company chosen to bring this new lenses to market.

If all goes as planned, we could have a first prototype very soon, and when that happens, and some of you here, like yourself, Phil, Evin and few other trusted close friends in this forum that also have a great understanding in Cine Glass, we'll get the chance to a first look at the Lens and at the MTF charts and the images it can produce, then and only then you'll understand why the Schneider's are not even in the same category, and we'll be standing much closer (Please note the word "CLOSER") towards Master Primes/Leica Summilux C Primes... ;)

Ketch, if you can pull this off, I will be pleasantly surprised. Sometimes I think this market needs a new contender, someone with the cash to fund a crazy idea that just might work. You might turn into a little Jannard...

Ha ha...

Well, I would be greatly honored to be compared in such a way, yet it is exactly my goal, to bring in the world of Cine Lenses what Jim did with RED in the Cine camera world.

Which is to bring the absolutely best possible cine lenses at the best price possible.

BUT, I must make clear that I am not trying to make a Master Primes or Leica Summilux C Primes contender at this first try, especially since this will be just below T2, but I can promise that we'll try our hardest to make them not too far form them as far as all qualities goes, speed been the only exception.

With the Second set, being a Super Speed Cine Set, could be a different story all together... ;)

To understand that the R&D done in the past years, has not only been done on Mechanicals, but also in the Glass department, were not only the polishing techniques have taken great importance, but also to the Coating it self to bring, not just a fantastic new set of Cine Lenses, but bring a new Set of Cine Primes with an attitude and a specific LOOK that I have been craving for, and that will make this Cine Set particularly different in it's image rendition too.

Then of course I also know for fact that we could be the first ones to bring to market an extra nice Surprise, which of course I can't say anything about it now, but look truly forward to the day that I will be allowed to .

Is this project dead?

No updates since September of last year.....

Not dead... But in all honesty in a technically induced coma at the moment... ;)

That is why I chose the Schneider Xenon lenses... The only ones good enough to keep me shooting when compared on a price, quality comparison, this as Christopher first suggested have most of what I look for, most, but not all, yet they'll keep me shooting till I get that perfect set going, meaning were also Speed and other important factors are kept in mind... Price of course will not as it can not be even close to be this affordable... Understandably... ;)

We'll see how things progress after NAB.
