  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Feature Western Shot on 5DMK2 MATTIE

It's the use of shutter speeds less than 1/60th, and particularly 1/30th, that give 30p video a 60i video look. Same with using less than 1/48 in 24p. Film cameras can't do a 360 degree shutter, the shutter has to be closed at least long enough for the film to advance to the next frame. So, it's those frame rates that look video-ish. You can pretty easily tell by the motion blur which shots use a 360 degree shutter. Look at Michael Mann's recent movies. Although I can tell the difference between 24p and 30p, it's the shutter speed, or film camera shutter angle equivalents, that make the most difference in trying to achieve filmic motion, in my opinion.

Thanks for the tips guys! This video was really inspiring to me especially since I am getting a 7D. Just goes to show the real potential.

Paris, I'm really sure that's not the case there.

The scenes looked ultra-smooth on cadence and not overblurry.

Pay attention specially to some of the indoor fight scenes.

And why no skew? It was obviously removed in post.

30p with a 180 degree shutter doesn't look videoish or non filmic in my opinion.
Do a side by side test. The difference is hard to tell more a feeling to me.
And non professionals prefer 30p cause the motion is more natural and fluent (Not blurry) to their eye. Also in terms of opening the shutter: the audience in the public enemy screening I saw thought the movie was very realistic. I wish for the days when shooting with digitals gets what it is a new, different medium to tell storys and create feelings and not just a cheaper tool that has to copy the look of analog film cameras and what we are used to or it just is no good.

The downfall of alot of indie films is putting too much CTB or just plain blue gels over lights to simulate night, just gives it the atmosphere of an indie film. Its like when you want films and see blue light cast somewhere and no source... it all has to come from somewhere or the audience won't believe it.

not going to waste anytime on tecnical evaluations...i wouldnt care if it was shot in mini DV it seems like someone has a story to tell, and i for one will watch if it passes my way. Kudos for the effort!

right.. somethink the producers should know 1st to shoot.. bbc is out of question.. poor flick lol

hey.. me wrote somethink not thing

The film looked too "modern" and glossy for my tastes. All the people are wearing perfectly clean clothes, etc. The 30p is really distracting for me as well.

Yeah, it seems like that Christian genre thing has the whole squeeky thing going on no matter what they do. BUT I gotta give the producers big props for production value, lighting and knowing their niche. Seems to me this looks like family friendly entertainment sprinkled with a bit of God. Hard to argue with that.

I think renting a RED next time might be a wise decision.

Tom has a good point. The make up department should have been severely disciplined and reigned in - everyone but particularly the women look like they have just stepped out of heavy duty make up sessions with a person obsessed with cleanliness and the removal of all excessive facial hair.

Doing that in a in a Christian/Family centered video???? I don't think so.

If technical evalution was not important or necessary RED User wouldn't exist...

Right? :)

Art is achieved through techniques.
Or that Graeme sig phrase.

My pet peeve. I can't stand watching movies based on my own faith for that very reason. BUT they are getting better I must say. Valiant effort and 500% better than most other "christian" stuff out there.

Thanks for all the feedback folks, I took the film over to AFM last week and got about 15 distributors wanting to get it out there. A few theatrical offers, what is the best way to transfer this to film? Any suggestions.

Sure glad I didn't have to face the extreme challenge of shooting a film like that on my 5D2. Congrats!

Smatter, I'm not very knowledgeable in the area of video to film, but seeing as how no-one else had any answers for you, here's a link that you might find useful:

http://www.zerocut.com/tech/vid_film.html

He has a lot of resources for transferring to film at the bottom of the article.

Best of luck!
