  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Fast Prime Set WOW

Randy can you confirm the LP primes will work on the Epic 5k? When I held them they had the biggest rear element I've ever seen on PL.

I know you only have only a few post but don't worry you are not Mitch's bitch. I can protect you here but only if you answer my questions.

Don't worry, Randy & I started a bit of back and forth on CML. Soon he will be trained in the ways of the Jedi.

Or at least the ways of the snarky internet forum commentary. I'm giving him free reign to toss right back at me, otherwise I'll polite up. Just have to wait for Mike to resurface then...

I'm still watching you.... I am counting on you to treat Randy with the respect you never afforded me.

Clever in the ways of the Jedi, he is.

And jonnycom... you know, I know where to find you.

Both of you just remember... I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brother.

Wow, can I cut and paste all this stuff onto my next script? :P

Michael, just curious, but when/will we get a rough idea of how many sets are pre-ordered? I am trying to guess 2010 rental rates.

I know not everyone is ready or wants a Red-like business model but it can't hurt to ask.

Roberto, we've pre-sold 25 sets so far. When we start showing the newer prototypes around I'm confident we will get some more orders. Interest is high.

johnnycom, I'm going to hold off on stating whether it can cover Epic/5k until I see the whole set. The prototypes I had were covering quite a bit more than S35/3perf.

Mitch, wow. I take the word bitch really seriously, having narrowly avoided some jail time myself once. I haven't told many people this but I figure now is as good a time as any.

I grew up in one of the rough patches around North Portland, and I used to play a lot of basketball, in an area with a lot of gang activity. Shit went down. But there was one incident in particular, over a stupid foul/free throw thing, and it escalated. A couple of guys pulled some guns, beatings were served, my name came up as a person of interest, you get the picture. This really freaked out my mom. She quickly made arrangements to get me out of Portland and down to LA.

I whistled for a cab and it came near, the license plate said "Fresh" and had dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought nah, forget it, yo holmes to Bel Air!

I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8, and I yelled to the cabbie "Yo holmes smell ya later!". Looked at my kingdom I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel Air.

Now, back to shooting lens tests.

By the sound of it, you will feel at home on Reduser, Randy. :biggrin5:

Do you know approximate pricing and availability of the 135mm and 150mm?

Michael & Mitch ... I'm counting on both of you guys to keep making me laugh my ass off ... and Randy ... well ... may the force be with you.

This all gonna be a lot of fun until JJ comes home and locks the liquor cabinet back up.

Can't wait until we get closer to NAB so Randy gets a nice crack at me and I can salvo back. So much fun.

Hey Mike, did you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the latest DCS newsletter? Cat's outta the bag.

Some more oil in the fire:

"Leica 4K+ “Mystery Cine Lenses” price…… is rumored to be around 15,000.00 EUR a piece (over 21,000.00 USD)."

And I always thought I was Band Pro's Chief Technology Officer for the past 15 years... who knew?

BTW Marker is a fine man and a friend... I wish him well and its a good feeling to know that they will be in good hands, its a great team with or without me.

And my family at Band Pro, I wish them all well and will dearly miss working with each one of them.

Apparently I missed something over the past few days...the last thing I read was Michael saying that these are definitely not Leica lenses. Time to slog through 18 pages of unread material...

International CEO of Leica, Dr. Andreas Kaufmann and Woody Allen.

R&D for those lenses are definitely paid by Dr. Andreas Kaufmann who is the CEO of Leica Camera AG and the owner of 96.5% of Leica Camera AG stock.

Also Peter Karbe supposed to be one of the main lens designers for Leica's Mystery primes.

"Peter Karbe, head of Leica optics design, has worked on the 50mm Summilux-M ASPH f/1.4
(according to rumor, he worked the lens design for ten years, and in his spare time),
75mm Summicron-M ASPH f/2.0 . As the head optics designer at Leica he has also
had a great deal to do with the new Leica S lenses.

For instance, many know of his many years of work on the 50mm Summilux ASPH.
He is extremely proud of this lens, pointing to the MTF-chart and exclaiming that wide open at f/1.4
it resolves 40lp at above 50%. He went into how he came up with the modified special double gauss
design and how the back half of the lens is identical to the 35mm Summilux ASPH,
while the front half is identical to the 50 Summicron. This was the secret to achieving such performance in a fast 50.
Then, he said that one Saturday morning over his first cup of coffee in his kitchen he thought about [Dr. Walter] Mandler. Apparently,
after Mandler designed the Noctilux, he used the same design to build the 75 Summiux. And while Peter doesn't like the 75 Lux ,
he decided that he needed to design a 75 based on the 50 ASPH design. Shortly thereafter, keeping everything the same, except
for removing one lens element in the first doublet behind the central ASPH element used to correct for aberrations caused at 1.4,
he minted the design for the 75 APO Summicron ASPH.
I asked if the design was the same why the 75 was an APO lens and the 50 wasn’t. Here is a bit of a shocker…
the 50 lux ASPH is an APO lens, containing an APO correction element. But, he thought the idea of an APO 50 was
a bit silly so they never put it on the lens or in any marketing materials.

...

According to Peter, the great leaps in lens design were brought about by technological advances.
The first was with new types of glass, then with coatings, followed by computer modeling,
and now just recently, advances in mechanical design and manufacturing. This is why the S lenses
and the new 21 Lux are as lightweight as they are. A lot of attention is now being paid by the design team
to the manufacturing process. Karbe has organized small design teams in his fast-growing department
to be more efficient and productive. An optics designer is paired with a mechanical designer
and a production manager to develop the entire product, not just the optical path. Handling,
feel, ease of manufacture, and consistency in quality control are equally important to imaging performance.
Also, by using more shared designs and more common components, more lenses can be brought to market faster.
The 35 and 50 Summarit. The 75 and the 90 Summarit. The new 21 Lux and 24 Lux are all examples of this.
With the 21 and the 24, one designer did both lenses simultaneously as they are fundamentally the same optical formula."

So Sanjin, you've already done side by side tests with the R1MX and Arri Alev elctronic viewfinder camera ?

Steve,

you can compare the samples from both sensors that are already available online:

So how does that show which is the better camera ? No point in making statements about how one is better than the other till proper side by side comparisons can be made.

Per specs RED1 is already better camera than Alexa III EVF and RED1 with M-X is a "beast" cam in comparison with Alexa III EVF.

This is my betting tip for 2010.

Also my RED1 when one day get M-X is going to be one the most versatile R1MX available and I do not need to repeat this now why.

Hey Mike, did you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the latest DCS newsletter? Cat's outta the bag.

Congrats, Mike...

BTW How much trade in can you give me on a RECAM towards an Alexa?
