  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Epic Quick Release System - 15mm LW rod standard?

the QR system is compatible with the ET Hybrid system, meaning you can trade out the portion of the baseplate that holds the rods with two 3/16 bolts to the 15mm. i have heard that eventually red will make the 15mm part, but for now, i just switch out the holders from my et unit i bought for my epic...it works great!

But isn't that for 15mm Studio? I thought the ET Hybrid was only for 19mm and 15mm Studio.

I plan to use Brooke / VF's "Full Metal Jacket" cage with the 15mm Light Weight bracket.

I was surprised that the body didn't have two threaded inserts for LW rods on the front ala AAton. On a camera this small, would have made a ton of sense.

I like that Brook's attaches to the camera plate instead of the bridge plate. That way if you have yours set up with a 15 LW follow focus, for example, you can quickly switch between the QR plate on your shoulder rig and the QR plate on your tripod rig without having to disassemble everything (or have two sets of 15 LW rods and two follow focuses).

Having it attached to the QR plate makes it, uh, not QR.

I have some Camera Plates with the ability to put 15mm LW support on the camera that work with RED's QR baseplate out for anodizing. I think it'll be exactly what you're looking for.

You can release your camera from the QR baseplate and keep the rods with the camera. It's way cool. Pictures as soon as they return and my baseplate arrives. :)

The picture that Curran posted [thanks!] is a spacer to work with the Element Technica Hybrid baseplate. It lets you use that baseplate in studio mode or you can remove the baseplate and have a very lightweight setup. The nice part is that I put holes on the bottom so one can attach a normal large euro quick release plate [haven't tried a small one...] if you wanted to just snap into a head with the lightweight rods already attached.

I am very interested in your solution too Brook. I want to keep my rig as light as possible.

vanishing point = passed out drunk, going to get bitched out by angry wife when it gets home
me = where can I buy one?

I really like the pictured setup. I hope I can go straight to tripod baseplate. Thus avoiding the quick release, dovetail etc, hence less weight, fewer pieces to the puzzle. Looking really nice.

Thanks, Lukasz. You can attach the Element Technica Hybrid baseplate or you can attach a normal quick-release plate for the lightest overall setup.

As for the QR version, the parts that came back from anodizing were a little off - it fit but it wasn't as tight as I'd like. I received my production model of the QR baseplate yesterday and did some new measurements. I'll cut up some new ones as soon as a new awesome little carbide-tipped dovetail bit comes in.

Here are updated renderings to demonstrate the concept. I anticipate it [and the original spacer version] going on sale by the end of next week.

Nice Brook, I like the side strips better then the all cage, are they flash to the actual SSD module? Hard to tell, just always want to make sure the body does not get scratched.

Love the FMJ Top plate!!
Thanks, Ketch!

There are two versions of the sidearms [both are pictured]. The cantilevered ones have 1/4-20s at RED's spacing [including one on the optical axis]. It does not contact the body, it has enough clearance based on reasonable flex.

The joined sidearms connect to the top plate as well as the bottom plate/spacer. They are beefier and have 3/8-16 holes every other [including on the optical axis]. Since there are 3/8ths on the optical axis, it functions as a lightweight way to mount the camera on its side [if you don't want to use the side cheese plate, which I have not shown yet].

Both of them have a NATO profile matched to RED's accessories, so any of RED's NATO/SWAT accessories will slide right on to the sidearms without needing any additional support.
Brook,

The 15mm LW, is that attached to a custom mounting plate or REDs? It looks awesome! My FMJ top should arrive today. Now if only I had an EPIC...

It is a custom mounting plate. One would purchase this plate in lieu of RED's Epic Adapter plate.

There will be FMJ packages including all of the pictured accessories [as well as the parts being offered individually].

So ... If we want to use the side mounting handles while on a 19mm ET baseplate, we just need to use your Epic riser/adapter and the FMJ Top Plate (and the side handles of course)?

If we have already bought a FMJ Top Plate, can we purchase the rest of a package at a package price?

Bingo. Keep in mind that it is designed for their Hybrid base and will not work with the oldschool ET/RED plate. ET had an adapter for that model. You could still use the cantilevered sidearms with their spacer as they only use my top plate for mounting.

Of course. :) Anybody who buys the top plate before the rest of the packages ship will get the purchase price of the top plate off of the package price. It's only fair!

More toys coming... Really cool toys.
