  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New DJI Ronin M

It would connect to the RED Epic/Scarlet via the Limo Power connector same as those used for Lipo 4S Batteries... Only question here is to see if P-Tap is really a viable and trusted connection to power the RED directly off any P-Tap equipped Battery.

Gotcha, thanks Ketch! I've been thinking about the reliability of powering off of Lipos also.

Great report Phillip! Would love to see a picture of your setup, if you have one. Thanks!

Well,

The power off the Lipo is actually plenty good for anything really, the problem it is the safety of it, toto much room for error that can cost fire hazards in any overcharge or wrong discharge or over discharge etc.

That is what I don't like about Lipo batteries, yet I haven't used any to comment on, exactly because of their very bad rep... Then again...

But the P-Tap power cable poses a more interesting solution in my opinion, at list till dji does (hopefully) finalize the design to allow the Ronin-M battery to also power the Red.

Hey there, Philip, can you give me a better description about what you mean by "The best part was I could rip the carbon cross bar off at anytime and go super small often being able to use just one arm"? I'm really not sure what this means. Maybe a picture would help?

BTW, I am extremely pleased to read your encouraging report!

Stephen

The the carbon side handles detach very easily so I mounted the monitor on the top handle. I'll try and get some pictures up later as we are using it again today.

Battery was this one http://www.amazon.com/ZIPPY-Compact-2200mAh-Lipo-Pack/dp/B00TDCDT7C velcroed to the bottom of the ronin under the power ports. Cable was the lipo one in ketchs picture.

The bottom picture Ketch posted??? Do you have a direct link for that cable?

Thanks so much!

I'm ordering today.

And, for what it is worth, I'm still completely confused about your "super small" set-up. Sorry, don't like the Ph.D. fool you. I'm plainly stupid.

Stephen it's a cable for the Lipo from Brushlessgimbal.com link site is on the pic... :)

As soon as I have some time I'll post some pics of my Ronin-M set up, but have been experimenting with various configurations, Battery types, Lenses and Epic mounts, plus use of only super thin cables for both the monitoring and power.

We'll likely at some point also have to include a wireless system configuration for Focus Pulling and second Controller, but for now I have no need for it.

this is all I got for now. You can see the lipo under the camera and the carbon handles gone.

Btw, since I have not seen any one posting, for those that do not know how it ships, this is how... And the heaviest thing in there is the Stand... I think I'll design a Carbon Fiber one... :)

Btw, I am about to receive an HPRC case I ordered to see if it fits nicely in it with it's own cut insert out of the box... Otherwise I'll sign an other Compact case with Custom cut foam for it... :)

I'm going to be buying mine tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to this! I loved our Actioncam, but out here in the Kansas wind, it was really hard to keep level. I think a gimbal could be just the ticket.

I'll undoubtedly have a few more questions.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Stephen

Just as I'm about to pull the trigger, Philip posts this! Oh, my. Tell me it's an easy fix. Someone.

:-)

Are you experiencing a drift during use even and after you've placed the Ronin-M on the stand, does it come back to a level horizon?

If it's drifting during use:

1. Perform a system calibration under the "More" tab in the app.
2. Turn off Roll SmoothTrack. If you have Roll SmoothTrack turned on, increase the deadband unless you want to SmoothTrack over easily and purposely need a dutched horizon.
3. If you want the horizon to follow over as tilt over on the roll axis, but are experiencing it coming back too slowly, then increase the Roll SmoothTrack speed.

Thanks Paul, it wasn't drifting on the stand, it seemed to be related to my movement. I'll check my smooth track settings
Sorry to freak you out Stephan, I'm not trying to sell people ronins here, just sharing my experience as using it with a dragon was a big question on my mind. I am happy with the purchase so far. I will say, I feel like I got a lot for the price and It has been relitivly easy to set up. I've had other gimbals and they did not work out of the box like this. They all have thier pros and cons and will require time and money for accessories but the trade offs can be rewarding as we have all witnessed. Just another tool in the kit.

Maybe you, Felix, and Ketch should be selling Ronins. Or at least demanding a commission.

:-)

Thanks for all the insights.

Stephen

Well, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a Ronin-M.

What chargers are you guys using for the Lipo batteries?

Thanks.

Stephen

Congrats Stephen!

I personally have at the moment decided against Lipo's... Way too many fires and problems out there with this name batteries.

DJI however they have done a great job with their batteries.

Till DJI comes out with a talked about solution for powering off their Battery, I'll continue to use V-lock batteries off camera, powered via a super thin P-Tap cable, while either mounting the Battery on top the handle away for the actual axis or on belt/pocket/bag on Operator.
