  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New DJI Ronin M

I hate that the Letus Helix and Jr. are so expensive. I hate that the Ronin is so heavy. I hate that the Ronin-M doesn't appear to be able to fly a Scarlet.

Someone give me some good news here.

:-(

Hahah, yeah... I'm with Stephen on this (but I fear the lines have been drawn and we're basically stuck in the middle).

Exactly! Felix has pulled it off with the Epic... I think he's posted some pics earlier in the thread showing his set up. I think he's just got the battery plate and brick strapped to the top handle, and I think he's using the standard lemo to send power to the camera. I have been hearing from some people that the cable, in this method, tugs on the camera too much, throwing off balance. But from Felix's video, he seems to have it figured out. Would love to be able to rent one of these things and see if I can nail down a workable set up, before spending the cash to buy one.

You are speaking my language, Omar.

I wonder why people aren't using battery belt-packs instead of trying to mount them on the rigs. That would save a ton of weight.

Stephen

My thoughts exactly. I've heard a few people theorize that the tug may throw off the balance... but I'd love to hear from a ronin owner directly, who's tried that method.

But that would seem to make little sense given that a lot of people strap their batteries to the top of the bar. I refuse to believe that that one axis makes all the difference.

I just got an email from Letus. They say that their Helix, Jr. works great with a stripped-down Epic/Scarlet. I love the design. I don't love the price.

There should be a Ronin-M+; same M-size, but with Regular (or stronger) motors to support more weight... There should also be a way to power the camera with the Ronin-battery... I'm pretty sure you can, but it ends up lasting like REDvolts.

I still think it's a tough call -- Ronin-M + Plus 4k DSLR = similar price of a regular Ronin, and you can shoot comfortably without needing an exo or easy rig... Just seems like a better way to shoot until Weapon is out (which should fly on the RoninM and LetusJr with less sacrifices).

+1 on this idea! Not sure it would make much business sense for DJI do an M+, but I'd likely pick one up. :)

I'm also disappointed about the price point of the Helix Jr., but I think that their model is a mostly new/different design from that other 3 axis gimbals out there.... and if they can get sales at that price, more power to them.

Till dji comes up with a fix for an onboard power solution off their Battery, wouldn't you think that using a P-Tap thin cable to RED Limo wouldn't be a good solution, via strapping the Battery only on Handle?

Thanks for the idea Ketch, forgive my ignorance, but what would the P-tap end connect to? Would it be a used when working with a 3rd party battery plate? Again apologies for my ignorance, just trying to learn more. Thanks in advance for the advice.

It would connect to the RED Epic/Scarlet via the Limo Power connector same as those used for Lipo 4S Batteries... Only question here is to see if P-Tap is really a viable and trusted connection to power the RED directly off any P-Tap equipped Battery.

Just finished our first shots with the Ronin M and dragon. Very impressed.

Setup up was completely stripped body, with a canon 16-35 F4 IS, paralinx arrow plus and a cinegears FF.
the red 5" touch was cabled to the handle and a small lipo was used to power the dragon and provide nescacary weight to the bottom of the camera. The best part was I could rip the carbon cross bar off at anytime and go super small with it often being able to use just one arm. The ronin was rock solid and fired up first time with no issues.
im pretty excited about the possibilities of this. I don't like the ideas of exo set ups and believe the gimbal should be light and easy to handle for long periods. I want to be able to run with it and this set up allows it.next step will be getting better lenses on it but I still have anothe pound to go before the rig is maxed to spec, maybe more after that.

Hey there, Philip, can you give me a better description about what you mean by "The best part was I could rip the carbon cross bar off at anytime and go super small often being able to use just one arm"? I'm really not sure what this means. Maybe a picture would help?

BTW, I am extremely pleased to read your encouraging report!

Hey Philip, thanks for sharing. Got any photos of the rig you could share? Also, are you using extensions? What cables are you using and which battery? How are you mounting the battery.

I'm about ready to buy but just need to find out exactly what works before I do.

I'm just about ready to buy, as well.

This is sounding great!
