  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New DJI Ronin M

Side handle

Side handle

Here's the answer to that one... Unfortunately your still not going to have enough room. It would also make the balancing more awkward than it already is.
Im reverting to a V-lock clamped to the handle bar for now but Im investigating Lipo batteries.

cheers Jon. I guess you're just shifting all the weight to one side and will need counterweights to fix which kinda defeats the object.

Such a shame!

I'm slowly getting there configuring my Ronin M for the Dragon. Can anyone tell me if the 15mm lens support bars that Ronin supply also fit the tilt bar? Im seeking a tilt bar extension on this side of the Atlantic. Unfortunately Cinemilled's solution is too far away from me in terms of location , time and cost. I'm requiring a quicker solution other than that which involves international shipping and customs clearance and expensive fast track shipping costs.

i'm looking forward to receiving mine but fuck knows when!!

i ordered from the site on the 6th and have been told 3 times since that it will be sent the next day via email support and nothing!
just went back and forth with the sales team now with the online chat and the best that could say was "maybe you'll get it next week" the site ETA "Available to ship: 1-5 working days after payment is confirmed"

the lies have taken the thunder out of this for me , hope the product is better than the service:(

Don't stress yourself Suresh, use this time wisely :)
Read and watch all you can find about M on the web, plan the shots, you're not the only one, i've been waiting for three weeks - still nothing :)

Here's the results from my first shoot:

Although some of the shots aren't perfect the main thing I learned was that the Ronin M allowed me to quickly grab stable cutaway material without breaking my back. All of this was shot in 1 hour.

Hope this is of interest

Good stuff Adam :)

Holy cow- just picked up one of these and its pretty damn awesome right out of the box. I am flying an A7s with the Sony/Zeiss 24-70. I was running within 15 minutes from unboxing to rolling. Pretty impressive for how quickly I set it up. So much lighter than other options I have seen out there. More testing tomorrow and I will post some video soon!

If I use side handle batteries or put a v-lock on the handles, will the Ronin M work? I heard that it breaks the weight limit compared to the first Ronin?

Chris, you can't use Red side handle on M, it won't fit, people mount batteries on handle bars, but you will need flexible enough power cable, i am still waiting for mine so i can't share my setup, don't have it yet :))
but here is another working solution :

mine arrived yesterday:)

I bought a gh4 setup with lumix glass specifically for the ronin m so not tried my SD yet but half a day in and its pretty cool, 15min after un boxing i was flying, the weight of the package with a small camera is game changing!! completely usable for long shots and a whole lot of fun!

I've used movi's and the original Ronin with epic dragons and for me personally to operate it got heavy far far to quickly, on bigger productions where i can pay for operators its the way for sure.

Still waiting on all the accessories i ordered batts clamps etc but i would say for the M stick to small cameras

Paramon's video was a little disappointing. I was hopeful to use our forthcoming Scarlet with this rig. Anyone having good luck using theirs and the Ronin-M?

Stephen

I think the secret is to use the bar extensions and not to load the battery under the bottom stage.

having a 90 degree Power Lemo with very very soft cable will be important as well.

all this from a guy who doesn't own one (yet)... (Me)

also so might be good to adjust yaw stiffness to attempt to prevent the wag.

I think it's a wash -- you couldn't use it on a moderately professional production without wireless follow focus, and that'll likely be the straw that breaks the camel's back. MUCH better off getting a GH4/A7r2 + RoninM combo -- batteries for days, adaptable to any lens mount, and you could likely shoot for a decent amount of time before fatigue (without having to buy/rent/hire superfluous or additional gear/people). PLUS, with the weight savings, you could actually use real cinema glass + filters, which is as important as the camera/sensor choice most of the time...

This is a major horses for courses example... Sure it'd be nice to be able to fly a DSMC (Weapon might work since it's a pound lighter and presumably better on battery), but using a 4k DSLR offers way too many real-world/usability benefits (and, y'know, it's what the RoninM was designed for).

A couple friends are loving the Ronin-M with their Canon C100, Sonys and Gh4s.

Great for their projects which is mostly weddings and corp stuff.

I think the buck stops at the original Ronin as far as any film work IMHO.
