  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New DJI Ronin M

does anyone know why the ronin's are one of the gimbals left on the market that can not invert the camera in upright mode?
could it be fixed via firmware or is it a physical restriction - i've tried to get answer from dji several times but no response.

I get that it can't do it now but is that locally to change?

Adam, love the dog short!

what camera were you using? Can you share more about your rig ?

thanks!

Hi Dan,

I'm currently using the A7s with a set of Leica Rs and a Zeiss Loxia 50mm f2. I have previously used a Scarlet on the original Ronin but found it to be really tiring. I think the maximum setup I'd use on the M would be a Carbon Epic/Dragon with a small prime and V-lock battery belt. You can feel that it isn't as sturdy as the original but that is obviously due to the weight advantages. Maybe I just need to hit the gym tho!

Thanks for the kind words Omar!

I have a shoot tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to post some more examples.

Cheers
Adam

For a five-pound camera rig, how would you compare the stability of each device? Is the Ronin much smoother than the Ronin M?

Thanks!

Matt, for me, I found it hard to properly use a small a7s on the ronin. It was like it wanted more weight. My Ronin M on the other hand doesn't feel to have the light weight be an issue. Seems good for the lighter guys... I haven't tried to use my epic on it... More than likely won't. I'd complain too much :-)

At the DJI booth, we had a Red Dragon on a Ronin-M mounted on an RC Car

Using a side plate would benefit those who own a regular DJI Ronin, but if you want to power the Red, you need an external 4-cell battery for now. When I say for now, I'm not promising an immediate solution, but it means we are working on something to benefit the Red Users.

Can someone fill me in on the 4s Lipo battery solution? Can they be wired up with a lemo connector to an Epic and is this safe? Im not having much luck configuring my stripped down Dragon. It obviously won't fit with a side handle/redvolts and my tethered V lock belt clip is not playing nicely either as the cable tugs too much . So I'm hungry to find a reliable power solution. I may have to try a slim V lock mounted to the side with an adapter . Has any one done this yet? Its going to be a tight fit and even then I'm not sure it will fit. Just balancing a Dragon on the Ronin -M is proving to be awkward. From what Im seeing so far the M is very much a compromise and if anyone is serious about flying a Epic on a gimble I'd prefer to go down the larger Ronin route. I'm all ears to suggestions to make this a solid workable set up on the Epic but I'm fearing it's always going to be a struggle which shouldn't be relied upon in a commercial shoot environment where time is money and needing consistent reliable takes is essential.
I love the rig with smaller cams on it and it would be nice to get a workable set up with the Epic so any tips on powering the camera is most welcome.

Unfortunately I am right in-between. Will be using this with my C100 and two-pound lenses, so a five-pound kit without wireless FF.

Good stuff felix.

battery on M same as original?

Im keen to see the power set up you have Felix. I can't find a workable solution with whatIm trying at the moment.

hi,

here are some pictures from the ronin.
i got a v mount at the handlebars. the bebop hot swap adapters cable to the cam isnt too stiff its ok. and the small hd 502 monitor on the other side.
with a thin hdmi cable to the monitor.

Can anyone confirm if you can get a
side handle on the ronin M and run redvolts?

thanks,

Craig

i'm looking forward to mine arriving soon i hope

Thanks Jon.

Shoot. I guess the camera housing is not wide enough to run side handle / redvolt power?

Surely even with a stripped down version running off a vlock on the handlebar is too heavy?!

Been shooting on gh4 & M5 for past two weeks and the weight is great. Don't really want to upgrade to weapon to trick this out but don't want RSI in my forearms either.

cheers!

I'm slowly getting there with my set up. Once i get some extension bars I should be set. Im using my old RED ONE V lock battery belt clip attached to the handle bar but the weak link at the moment is the 2b to 1b adapter cable which is too stiff . I'm in the process of adapting the cable now.

I'd like to buy some extension bars from Cine milled but the shipping costs to UK are pretty silly. If anyone wants to share a order and split the cost of shipping to UK give me a shout :-)

hi Jon,

I might be be up for sharing shipping costs.

do you think you could use a red side handle if you take the ssd mount off and use a rear ssd mount instead?

cheers
