  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New DJI Ronin M

hi,

here are some shots from the ronin-m

red epic-x, canon mount,
v-mount on the handlebars.. small hd 502.
lenses. sigma 18-35.. shot at 18mm and 10-20 mm.
shot 5k 3k 4k. most 50 fps some shots higher frame rates
no post stabilisation.

i think it works :) but i need to go to the gym.. puh
some fine adjustmenst. but it works!

next days some interior shots with that same setup. i hope i can post some pictures.

hope that helped

cheers.
This just sold it for me. Great job, best test footage I've seen.

Thanks for the video Felix! It seems to fly great! I'm excited at getting a Ronin M for my Epic, especially after seeing that.

Does it feel to you like the motors are easily handling the Epic? Or that you are pushing the device to the edge of it's limits?

Thanks for all the info,
Omar

I wonder if this is something we will find out later on as wear and tear comes to play.

I'd still like to know how some earlier on were getting Lipo batteries to work. I know someone mentioned posting a tutorial. Losing the weight of the Brick/AB battery somewhere on the rig would be a huge relief.

I like that about the Helix as far as powering up the host camera.

Agreed. Unfortunately the price of the Ronin M is in line with what I do, as well as the weight and size. I think DJI may also be working on an option. I'll be watching from the crowd until there is more news.

small hd 502 for monitoring.
maybe i can show some footage next week.

Really amazing, Ron! Just picked up a Ronin-M myself and reading through other people's reviews & experiences - there isn't a lot about Red + Ronin-M yet, but I'm about to give it a shot. Works great for smaller rigs, DSLRS and such obviously.

Having used the Freefly Systems MoVi, I'd rate the MoVi as a much smoother and lighter system. But the Ronin-M's physical build quality and design (hiding nearly all wires) is incredible. It's very well thought out, seemingly simple and it took 45 minutes from unboxing to use.

the Helix is fine for small Camera's but from what i saw it can't take the same G forces that the Ronin can this a commercial i did with the Beta Ronin

How are you powering this bad boy? I've read of people mounting batteries to the body. I have a few AB batts and would prefer to use my existing gear vs buying new things

Hey Arthur,

I haven't had time yet to configure my Red on the Ronin-M to play around with, but after reading through everything I've come to realize a few key points:

1) A lot of people are claiming that the Red Scarlet/Epic are top heavy and that these Tilt Arm Extentions are necessary from Cinemilled. I can see it, but haven't tried it myself yet.
2) If you already have a V-Lock battery, the cheapest way of mounting it to the side of the Red (which is best for balance) is with this. Freefly Systems makes a lighter kit yet, costs more but it comes with a V-Lock Mount it looks like.
3) Other option, that I may try, is simply velcro'ing in my batteries to the top handle. DIY style (to test). Just needs a longer, thinner Lemo power cable to reach.

When I get time after the next few days of shooting I'm planning on mounting the Red with a thin V-Mount battery at the back - see whether that truly works or not.

Sounds good Stephen, would love to hear about your progress!

Im seeing a lot of these V-Lock options.

Man that sucker is heavy without it (Ronin) and we've been cycling through six REDVOLTS in 3/4 of a day.

How are you guys liking this weight with V-Locks?

Eric, I always film Red with V-Lock. Simply because the Redvolts unfortunately last for such a short time - if they're on a rig, it's a bit of a pain to replace all the time. I wish they lasted longer, I love the smaller footprint of Redvolts. So I'm already used to handheld uses of the Red w/ V-Lock - I've just gone with slimmer batteries. You can get absolutely massive batteries that weigh as much as a small house, but I use an affordable VariZoom option that are amoung the thinnest out there and provide power for about an hour.

The Ronin-M is much lighter than the Ronin which is why I'm so curious to try out the Red on it (stripped down). I'd get much longer use on a shoot, handheld with that thing than a larger Ronin! Just my personal opinion.

Side note: I recall someone on here said earlier that they know of a bunch of people flying Reds on MoVi M5's. I know you can fly a C300 on a MoVi M5 but it's technically not rated for the weight, you just have to be really precise with balance to get it to work. I don't think I've ever seen evidence of a Red on an M5 but would love to see pics! :).

As the M5 was "rated" for DSLRs up to 5lbs, don't you think the Ronin M that's "rated" for 8lbs will work on the Epic / Scarlet bodies? The cost of the Ronin M is what's drawing me to it.
No actually. The M5 has much bigger motors. The DJI gear they rate high. If they say 8 lbs max they really mean it. PLUS consider customer service. Freefly is amazing. DJI is a nightmare. Just go on one of their forums lol. It's a joke. The M5 will set you apart too, from the other bajillions of people buying the Ronin-M. Just my 2 cents.

Stephen, I'm pretty much right there with you on your analysis and sentiments...I think the arm extensions and a handle-mounted battery are the way to make this work. I know there are plenty of people out there scratching their heads in disbelief as to why anyone would try this extreme combination (Red + Ronin M), but for those of us who shoot in a particular way under specialized circumstances, a ~25% weight reduction in a handheld rig is well worth the hassle.

Half way down the first page of this thread, the DJI rep mentions that while they rate it at 8lbs, they've pushed the ronin-m to as high as 10lbs. Not trying to be confrontational, just wondering why you are so certain that the ronin-m won't work with a stripped down Epic / Scarlett? Between the DJI rep saying that they were flying it with an Epic Dragon at NAB and a couple members on this thread saying that they're using it with their Epics (and one posting video of his tests), I was feeling pretty confident in putting my money down on the m. I'm just wondering if you can share some specific concerns from any first hand experience using a stripped down Epic or Scarlett with it? I'd much rather be a little disappointed now then really disappointed after spending $1500.

Thanks,
Omar
