BMPCC 6K | 6K 60FPS | Test Footage of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K in BRAW 2.4:1

By Of Two Lands

Here is our first video shot on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K.
Filmed in 6K 60 fps BRAW in 2.40:1 aspect ratio.
BMPCC6k : https://amzn.to/2N5IZp1

After receiving the Pocket 6K we got up at sunrise and went to our favourite testing spot. The wind was crazy and got a little worried about sand and salt getting inside the camera but it all seems to be fine :).

So far so good. Feels like shooting with the 4K version, apart from the weight and file size (in 6K).

Let me know if you have any questions about the BMPCC 6K.

Filmed in 6K 60 fps BRAW Q5, 2.40:1. All handheld.
6144x2560

BMPCC6K: San Diego, California

Brought the BMPCC6K to San Diego to get some test footage.
Shot at 50fps, edited in DaVinci Resolve 16.
Music created with Native Instruments Kontakt + Spitfire Audio Orchestral Library.

Stockholm - a BMPCC6K test [BRAW 2.4:1]

By Pontusjoh

I finally recived my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K (what a ridiculous name..) and decided to take it out for a spin.

I recorded everything in BRAW 8:1, Constant Bitrate, 6144x2560 with the 2.4:1 aspect ratio.
So please note that this test is not done on maxed out settings.
I decided to go with the 8:1 instead of 3:1 due to file size, and 6144x2560 (2.4:1) instead of 6144x3456 (full 6K) because I wanted 60 fps over 50 fps.

There's flickering in some lights because I had a bit to high shutter speed.

This video was edited and graded through Davinci Resolve. I didn't do any denoising and adding back grain because it was just way to much for my PC (or external drive) to handle and my renders ended up getting random black frames throughout the video. So the grain get's consistently worse towards the end, but I'm still pretty impressed with the low-light capabilities.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K BRAW - Short Film

Everything was shot handheld. I had no access to a tripod, gimbal, or a slider. The battery lasted just enough to complete the shoot.

We had about one hour to complete this due to dinner reservations. So, I had to rely on Premiere Pro's Warp Stabilizer to eliminate the handheld shake. It's not perfect, but it did a pretty good job.

The lighting in this scene was from natural light sources in the parking garage. No other lights or modifiers were used.

GEAR USED IN THIS VIDEO:

BMPCC6K: https://amzn.to/2U2PNo2
28mm F1.8: https://amzn.to/2LbHrGz
50mm F1.4: https://amzn.to/321WdXj
135mm F2.0: https://amzn.to/321xcvt

SETTINGS USED IN THIS SCENE:

- Filmed in 6K (6144x2560) 2:4:1
- Final export is in 6144x3456 (16:9)
- Constant Quality Q0 BRAW 3:1
- Frame Rate: 24p
- Shutter Angle: 180
- Aperture: F2.0 - F2.8
- ISO: 400-1250
- Denoiser was NOT used

BRAW files were imported into Premiere using the BRAW Studio Plugin.
Edited and Color Graded in Premiere Pro.

YouTube's video compression is pretty bad, so I've went ahead and uploaded this video to Vimeo for higher quality playback. If you'd like, you can watch it here: https://vimeo.com/358859029

Quick and Dirty Samples: RED Gemini vs Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K

By

quick test between these 2 cameras. I am mostly concern with the noise pattern. More test to come. This was just a straight out of the camera sample since I have not seen these cameras compared. Lenses used:
Red: 24-70 2.8II
BMPCC: 16-35 2.8 III

I think the value of RED Dragon DSMC1 cameras has fallen through the floor because of this camera. It's not so much that the Pocket 6K is a more capable camera, it isn't, but it matches on resolution and beats RED for accessory and media pricing as well as support since DSMC1 cameras are basically out last I heard. I don't think even the Komodo will help against this if the price difference is going to be significantly greater than the Pocket 6K. I would love to pick up a RED Dragon DSMC1 camera right now myself as I have some spare accessories and media to support it but for new buyers, DSMC2 is simply out of reach. Even so, I'm debating even the used Dragon at this point as it just seems to be a bad investment for the price without support, especially at this point with the competition heating up by the day. Heck, there's even a rumor of the Sony FS7 successor having 6K (5.9K for 16:9 apparently) and at the usual $10K price point and, on top of all that, it's said to be a full frame sensor! If it is even close to the A7S series in low light, that's going to be a tough sell for a RED package around that price. Of course, Blackmagic will come out with their big brother to the Pocket 6K so that compounds the issue further. In my opinion, RED needs to drastically change its strategy and open things up a bit more, the inexpensive media options for Komodo is a good start but for goodness sake, they need to partner up with somebody to offer after market support for the older and discontinued RED cameras if they won't do it themselves. If they can't get specific parts anymore then let somebody come up with some new ones with different chips or something, with all the stuff people are making today, surely anything short of the sensor should be fixable and replaceable by this point. Even just providing instructions and certification on how to swap parts from broken cameras to fix other cameras would be helpful. Also, yeah, providing SDK or instructions on coming up with new modules would be a big help too to solve some of the old storage option issues and functionality problems people have had with RED accessories (those side handles seem to be a constant problem over time). If not, then the next wave of cameras from RED, I think, need to be a bit less modular in the sense that RED cameras have been in that they need to be like the RED One which had ports built-in and not sold as an extra thousand dollar plus accessory module and, yeah, there needs to be more external recording options in case someone starting out can't afford RED mags, just do like the Pocket 4K and 6K do with USB-C vs. CFast and provide data guidelines as to what compression and codec options work with what, kind of how it used to be when RED Drives, SSD Drive, CF cards, and Mags were all options. The Ranger cameras actually seem to be a move towards this direction so hopefully that continues with whatever DSMC3 turns out to be. In the meantime, it's going to be interesting to see how things adjust with the RED marketplace over the next few months with all the rumored announcements coming down the line.

Does anyone know where i can find some youtube compressed test footage from the BMPCC 6K ?

DJ,

You're probably better off downloading compressed footage from Vimeo since they actually allow some downloads.

It's so annoying to change the tripod handheld when I'm always taking pictures. Why do not I always use a tripod when taking pictures and editing with a handheld?

I believe the pocket native ISO is 400 and 3200, so shooting at 800 means that you are pushing a stop. If you don't need the DR, it will be much cleaner to shoot at ISO 1250 and then pull back the exposure some.

Scott,

In the description in the video you show above, he states that these where straight out of the camera samples and that more tests will come. So maybe in the next video or two he will take care to get better results.
