  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New Beta 4 Redcine-X with NVIDIA CUDA decode

Thanks Mike!

This beta version was obviously optimized for higher playback speeds. A side effect of that optimization is potential stuttering when the system isn't capable of hitting the target FPS. We know of a few ways we can compensate for this. To help decide which way (or ways) to use, we've added additional information to this version's log files.

Thanks Steven. Just to be clear, while offering info on issues I'm seeing, I'm VERY excite by this new development. Almost as excited as I am with my RED cameras themselves. Anything I can do to help, please let me know.

Cheers - Mike.

Dam it Jarred!!

You are really working hard on making me try Windows again, but this time around I might just sale the MacBook Pro all together in the same way I did with the iPhone in favor of the RED Hydrogen One and never looked back!!

This is really so awesome RED TEAM you guys fucking ROCK!!

Windows only... Heh, ok I get it.

Best current choice of Laptop sporting the RTX 2080 Ti?

This is amazing! I threw a bunch of clips at it. On a single GTX 1080 I'm getting:

8K FF 5:1 19 fps
8K FF 6:1 20 fps
8K FF 7:1 17 fps
8K FF 8:1 21 fps
8K FF 10:1 23 fps
8K FF 4:1 18-19 fps
8K FF 7:1 21 fps
8K FF 13:1 23-24 fps
8K FF 6:1 20 fps

8K HD 5:1 19 fps
8K HD 7:1 17 fps
8K HD 8:1 21 fps
8K HD 10:1 21-22 fps
8K HD 16:1 23-24 fps

8K 2:1 5:1 21 fps
8K 2:1 12:1 24 fps (100% of project base 24 fps)

8k WS 8:1 24 fps (100% of project base 24 fps)
8K WS 4:1 21-22 fps
8K WS 5:1 22-24 fps
8K WS 9:1 24 fps (project base 25 fps)
8K WS 10:1 24 fps (100% of project base 24 fps)
8K WS 13:1 25 fps (100% of project base 25 fps)

Aaron, how do you measure the fps? For export I understand how, but would be useful for playback.
Cheers,
Andreas

Best current choice of Laptop sporting the RTX 2080 Ti?

Hiya Ketch, there is sadly no laptop that has a RTX 2080 Ti, also as far as I know there is not currently one that has a RTX 2080 either. What they have is a RTX 2080 Max-Q that is a mobile version which is slower, but uses less power.
However, there will be probably be released laptops that have the full RTX 2080 cards, just like you can get full 1080 GTX cards.

However you are unlikely to get realtime with full debayer 8k 30fps on a RTX 2080 (since it is not Ti). Unless of course Red keeps optimizing. 24 is more likely of course.
Myself I'm ok with a heavy laptop (around 5kg) so we currently have a MSI Titan GT75 with 17" screen, 96GB RAM, 1080 GTX and 10TB SSD. The next generation of these will of course have 2080 cards.
They even have an 18.4" GT83 laptop that has dual GPUs. A future version with dual RTX 2080 should have no problem with realtime 8k, probably would be able to deliver 1.5x realtime.

These larger laptops however have heavy power cables (2kg!), are heavy in themselves and have poor battery power (2-3).
There are of course slimmer laptops with longer power etc, but then they also suffer from heat problems and are not as powerful.

Cheers!
Andreas

how do you measure the fps?

It should show up in the lower left corner of the REDCINE-X PRO Viewer window. While the clip is playing it displays the FPS of recent frames. When playback stops it switches to the average FPS, since the clip started playing.

Will keep my eyes open, and thanks for the run down Andreas.

Need an option for my current project, a short film I'm shooting in Venice Italy on the RED Hydrogen in 4k 3d/4V for a 4V finish and doing the 2D version for Film Festival submission on 8k, but since I'll need to look for an Editor & Colorist to finish the short for me anyways I won't have to worry too much about what I have, but still looking to get a Laptop to handle as much as possible, since investing in a new one, even PC at this point saying good by once and for all to Apple on a Mobile station too.

Andreas,

As Steven stated above, It's in the lower left corner of the Redcine-X viewer window.

For a more mobile but still strong laptop maybe the MSI GS75 Stealth could be of interest. All new manufacturers will are coming out with new ones, but I like the cooling solutions from especially the larger MSI.

Best of luck with your project!
Thanks Rand and Steven for the fps counter, never saw it before!

I have not tested this beta yet. But your numbers are less good than I get on my osx 1080ti machine without this new Nvidia drivers. Am I missing something?

The build 51 beta moves the debayer from CPU to GPU, so if you're getting better numbers than these on a non-beta build, you must have a pretty beefy CPU.

I think this build is less for the high-end professionals such as yourself that have already tooled up for the old workflow. Now the prosumers can debayer 8K RED footage quickly and easily on last-gen gaming cards. When I got my Epic-W I bought a Threadripper to go along with it. The GTX 1080 is now kicking its ass and it was half the price of the CPU.

Your GTX1080 is limiting you with the debayer, our TR1950x + 2 vega FE does realtime 8k FF 8:1 25fps(limited by the tr1950x on the decode).

Thanks buddy!

The MSI GS75 Stealth seems a great option, but would love to have a 4K screen this time around, but surely would love going back to a 17", as the 15" is great but not as much Realestate as the 17" for me means a lot as I no longer use a desktop do too much traveling, at list till this stops a Laptop will be my only system so it needs to tick all of the boxes, even if I have to add a Side Graphic Card Box, and was thinking if the Razer, but I guess now I'll wait a bit longer and see the RTX 2080Ti get implemented.

Hiya Ketch. I agree with uhd screen. The 75 I have, has a UHD screen which is great. Cant imagine going back! They usually have better colors as well since the 1080 displays are usually gamer screens.

Exactly, and would really love a 17" Laptop with 4k+ Display with the new RTX280Ti, possibly even a second one via the Portable Box :)

Hey folks,

Just looking at some 8k on a dual 2080 ti 4.7ghz system with 64gb ram and 3tb m.2 storage and we are seeing realtime playback when using a single gpu which is phenomenal, but about 10fps with both gpus enabled. Will there eventually be gains to be had by having two gpus, or will this always be a single gpu deal?

Can't wait to see the sdk get out there so the rest of the software can crush 8k, too!!

I wonder if there may be situations where it will be better to use the old method so you are using the CPU instead. For example Davinci Resolve will be quite starved with the GPU side it uses GPU for almost all operations. In this case it could easily be solved with adding another GPU of course.
Would be nice if we will be able to choose what methods works best.
Andreas

Were you in full screen or windowed?

RELEASE NOTES

Added: Multi-GPU support for windowed display. (Full screen support is not fully implemented.)
